The Enigma of Sarah; A mystrious Echidna appears outside Knothole...

 The Enigma of Sarah
In the center of a forest, a young echidna, in the 14-15 age range, was unconscious.
Her eyes opened to a dense forest. She sat up. Her mind was blank. Her memories, gone. All she knew was her name: Sarah. She got up, and walked through the forest. She did not know where she was going. She was worried about her amnesia, but not about the fact that she was lost. In fact, Sarah was indifferent about that fact. She knew if she walked far long enough, she would find someone. She spotted a figure in the distance; she had no idea who it might be, but figured anyone was better than no one.
Amy Rose was trekking through the wood near Knothole; she needed some alone time, time to think. In the distance, she spotted the echidna. As she drew closer, she wondered why she was there.

-Amy, cautious:...Hello? Who are you?
-Sarah:...I...I'm not sure. I awoke in these woods, and I have no clue how the heck I even got here.
-Amy:Uh...
-Sarah: To be honest, I seemed to have lost my memory. I will need a place to stay while I get my mind together. Is there a town nearby?
-Amy: Yeah! Follow me.

As Sarah followed Amy, she tried to formulate a plan. But, without any idea what she should be doing, she knew any sort of planning would be rather futile. She decided to wing it. At least, Sarah thought, this individual was harmless enough. She knew little else about her, but somehow felt as though she could be trusted.

-Sarah: What is your name, by the way?
-Amy: My name is Amy. Amy Rose. What's yours?
-Sarah: Sarah. I think.

When Sarah entered Knothole, she was impressed.

-Sarah, impressed: This is more advanced than I expected.
-Amy, a little interested: What do you mean?
-Sarah: ...I'm not certain. I expected something different, but this is fine.
-Amy: You don't have a place to stay, do you?
-Sarah, reluctant: ...Uh...No.
-Amy: It's all right. You can stay at my place for a while.

Later, they entered Amy's house. They sat at a table. Amy wanted to know more about her guest.

-Amy: So, you really remember nothing?
-Sarah: No. I don't know where I live, who my parents are, or even myself. Until my memory returns, I will pretty much have to live an entirely new life.

Amy was surprised how well Sarah was taking her situation.
-Amy: Aren't you worried at all?
-Sarah: Not really. My skills seem to remain intact, but I'm not entirely sure what they are yet.
-Amy: Huh.

<>ONE DAY AFTER ARIVAL<>

Amy was feeling tense recently. She tried to hide it from her guest, but didn't succeed very well. Sarah inquired about what was wrong, but Amy usually didn't answer. This time, she did.

-Amy: *sigh*. Alright, I'll talk. I'm in love wi-
-Sarah: But you fell he doesn't love you back?
-Amy, surprised: How- How did you know?
-Sarah: You often talk to yourself about that.
-Amy: What? No, I don't.
-Sarah: Are you sure? I heard it.
-Amy: Well, *sigh*, yeah. You see, there's this guy named Sonic. I've been in love with him for years, but he doesn't love me back. Instead, he's with this other girl, nam-
-Sarah: Why do you love him?
-Amy, a little shocked: What? What do you mean? Love can't be explained!
-Sarah: I meant, why do you still love him?
-Amy: Why wouldn't I.
-Sarah: You are being childish.
-Amy, angry: I'm not chi-
-Sarah: Yes, you are. There is little point in loving someone if it isn't mutual. You have to move on. You will find someone new, someone who loves you.
-Amy: ...
-Sarah: Think about it.

Amy dwelled on the matter for hours. She eventually tried to do something she thought she would never do: move on.

The next day, Amy thought that there might be a database of some sort. She went to Rotor for this request: there was, in fact a database. A DNA sample was taken from Sarah, but when it went through the archive, there was no match. It was as if she never existed.

<>ONE WEEK SINCE ARRIVAL<>

Sarah had gotten along with the others in Knothole well. Her memory didn't come back, but she had a new life by then. She did not know who she was, only who she is. Amy quickly grew on her; They became good friends after a short time. Little did they know, trouble was brewing on the horizon. A lone robot was in an empty field. Energy coursed through it; Chaos energy, but it was bent, twisted by pure evil. It cast the energy forward, and it began to take shape. When the energy solidified, there was a base. Its work was not done, however. It knew that the Freedom Fighters would discover its base and take it out. That was exactly what it wanted. It wanted more than to win. It wanted to cause pain.

It was in the middle of the night; both Amy and Sarah were fast asleep. suddenly, the ground shook. There was an impossibly loud noise. Both Amy and Sarah were unconscious in seconds. When Amy finally came to, there was a robot of some sort in front of her; She instantly assumed it to be hostile and attacked. Then, she heard a spark of energy, and felt excruciating pain in her side. She collapsed to the ground, grasping her bleeding side. When she looked up, she saw the robot standing in front of her, and fainted.

When the explosion hit, Sarah jumped out of bed was ready to take on whatever was causing this. Something appeared in front of her: a familiar robot. A sense of dread gripped her, but she ignored it when the robot attacked. She heard the shot hit Amy. Seeing her motionless on the ground in front of this threat caused anger to rise up inside her. She attacked the robot, but the robot held her in place, and with a chilling voice seemingly borne of evil incarnate, said "That was not a good idea."

Amy came to. She was in a bed of some sort. It was hard to tell, as her vision was blurry. She guessed that she was in the hospital. Her entire body felt sore and cramped. She was scared. She felt alone. However, she then noticed someone was grasping her hand. She lapsed into unconsciousness before she could see who it was.
When Amy came to a second time, she still felt as if someone was holding her hand; but when she looked, no one was there. However, in the room, was Dr. Quack.

Quack: Ah, Amy, you're awake. You sustained some unusual injuries, but you will be fine.
Amy, remembering her friend: Sarah! Is Sarah OK?!
Quack: ... I'm afraid her injuries were much more severe. She's in treatment now, but her outcome is uncertain.
Amy: But... Why...?
Quack: From what we can tell, someone - or something - attacked both of you. Whatever it was, it was powerful. When we found Sarah, she was concerned solely about you.
Amy: ...She really cares about me... I hope she will be alright.

<>ONE MONTH AFTER ARIVAL<>

A lone robot hovered in space near Mobius. It was waiting, waiting for a time to strike. Now was that time. It rocketed towards Knothole once more, putting its plan into action.
The robot destroyed the castle door effortlessly. The freedom fighters, already inside, were surprised, but quickly got on the offensive. It toyed with them, letting them think they were winning, and when it was done, flew towards an old abandoned city, with the freedom fighters on its wake, ready to fall into its trap.

Amy Rose was intent on going with the rest of them.
Amy: Hey, why can't I come along?!
Tails: Amy, you will be coming with me. We found some sort of base, but it seems empty. We're going to check it out.
Amy: OK, fine, whatever.
Sarah: I'm coming with.
Tails: Sarah, we don't know what will happen there. It would be safer if you were to stay put.
Sarah: I'll be fine. Besides, I should be there to keep Amy in line.
Amy, a little angry: Hey, that's uncalled for!
Sarah: Geez, I was just joking.
Amy, to herself: Sometimes, I don't know why I stay with you...
Sarah: It's because you don't have anyone else to be with.
Amy, blushing: That's not what I meant.
Tails, thinking: Ever since Sarah showed up, Amy's been acting kinda weird.
Sarah: Ah, well, we're best friends. It's natural for me to be messing with you. Anyhow, we should be leaving.
Tails: Oh, yeah.

When the trio got to the base, Sarah had a rather uneasy feeling.

Sarah: Do you guys have the feeling that someones... watching you?
Tails: Now that you mention it, a little.
Amy: It's creepy.
Tails: But we detected no activity from this base. I'm sure it's empty.

Later, they got to the center. In the rather large room was the core.

Tails: This must be the core. But it seems, I don't know, sort of off.
Amy: What do you mean?
Tails: It doesn't seem to be connected to anything.
Sarah, investigating a panel on it: What does this flashing light mean?
Tails: What? Huh, there seems to be a button. However, there is nothing that says what it does.
Amy about to press it: I say we press it and find out!
Sarah: No! Don't touch it! There's no telling what could happen!
Amy: I guess, but...

Amy pressed it anyway.
Nothing happened.

Amy: See? That wasn't so bad.

Tails' communicator started acting up.

Tails, turning it on: Rotor, what is it?
Rotor: We have very, very bad news. A large group of missiles have been launched and are heading straight towards Angel Island!
Tails: WHAT!?
Sarah: Told you not to press it.

Knuckles was meditating when his communicator started ringing. He felt it was rather odd, since it was inactive for over a year. Nevertheless, he was annoyed. However, when he got the news of the missiles, he was no longer annoyed. He was downright pissed. He had to think of something, to come up with a plan. He did, but he wasn't sure it would work.

The freedom fighters were in the middle of combat. The robot was alot tougher than before. Suddenly, there was rumbling, and a loud noise.

Sonic: What the heck is that!?
Robot: That would be my missiles. They will destroy Angel Island and all on it.
Sonic: But... Why would you want to destroy Angel Island?!
Robot: Because I can.
Sonic:...you...you're...evil...
Robot: Evil? I am Mecha. And you will die.

Mecha swatted Sonic with enough force to send him through the wall. Sonic, really angry, spin-dashed back at Mecha, and the fight continued. However, Sonic quickly retreated with the others to form a plan.

Quickly, they took off after the missiles. The plan was for Sonic to hop onto the missile, destroy it, and get back onto the craft. One by one, the missiles were destroyed. However, the last one changed direction before they could get to it. It started heading straight towards the base Amy was in...

They decided it would be best to get back. But, in front of them, was Mecha.

Mecha: I have to commend you. I wanted to kill those who chased me and get back here to launch the missiles, but when you launched them early, Sonic went after them. Good strategy on your part. Too bad strategy will be useless to you when you're dead.
Sarah: I've had enough. Who are you!?
Mecha: Ah, Sarah, you're mind must have been damaged. I thought you followed me on purpose, but now I suppose that was dumb luck.
Sarah: You... know me?
Mecha: Yes, yes I do. I wasn't surprised that you followed me to this universe, but to this time? Fate will not let you leave me alone, will it?
Amy: Sarah, what is it talking about?
Sarah: I have no idea.
Mecha: Enough! Now that you are in a weakened state, I can finally rid myself of your interference!
Tails: What do you want? Power? Money?
Mecha: I want death. Destruction. Suffering.
Sarah: You make me sick.
Amy, angry as hell: I'VE HAD IT!

Amy started charging at it, but it simply started building energy. Sarah realised what was about to happen, and ran forward, grabbed Amy, and started running away. Tails, not wanting to be with Mecha, ran with them.

Amy: What are you doing!?
Sarah: Saving your life!
Tails: I hope we can get out before it finishes charging!
Amy: Of course we ca-

All Sarah could see was whiteness. The sudden bright light had blinded her, and she also couldn't hear a thing. All she could do was to try to keep running. The light died out, and everything was black. She could only keep running...

When they finally regained consciousness, they realised they were fine.

Tails: What... was that?
Amy: I think it was some sort of explosion.
Sarah: An explosion? What makes you say that?
Amy: The fact that we seem to be in the middle of some sort of field with no base in sight. That, and I still can't hear anything.
Sarah: Then how can you tell what I'm saying?
Amy: I can read lips.
Tails: Uh-huh. I have no idea where we are. Also, what that robot said made no sense.
Amy: I think I can hear again. Tails, would you please answer you're communicator? It's ringing is driving me crazy!
Tails: My communicator was destroyed in the explosion.
Amy: Ah, then it must be my ears.
Sarah: How the heck did we survive that anyway?
Amy: Plot shield.
Sarah: What?
Amy: Nothing. Anyways, let's be glad we're alright.
Sarah: Yeah, I almost lost you. Be more careful next time! I don't want to see you get hurt again...
Amy: Alright, a little caution is probably a good idea.
Tails: We should probably find a way to get back to Knothole.

And so, the trio started walking until they could find a town. Eventually, they got back. But there was bad news. Something was coming. Something big.

Mecha was in the deep reaches of space. It was propelled by the explosion. It was really, really pissed. It decided that this was it. It charged up all of it's energy and fired a huge blast at Mobius, then became inactive. Its last act headed towards Mobius, and would hit it in a week's time...

<>ONE WEEK LATER<>

The dark chaos blast moved silently through space towards Mobius, whose inhabitants were unaware of the impending doom.

Amy Rose was in the shower, contemplating how strange life had gotten recently, when there was a knock at the door.

Amy: Sarah, could you get that?

Sarah opened the door to an adult echidna. His presence was intimidating, although he seemed familiar.

???: Sarah! I didn't expect to find you so easily. It's time to go home now.
Sarah, confused: Do I know you...?
???, surprised: How do you not know me? Did you suffer memory loss? Tails said that it was possible...
Sarah: What are you talking about?
???: I am your father.

Sarah was shocked. Suddenly, it felt as if a wall broke in her mind. Suddenly, she remembered everything: who she was, where she came from, and who the stranger standing in front of her was.

Sarah invited her father in. Just then, Amy came in.

Amy: Sarah, who is this?
Sarah: This... is my father. Amy, there is something I need to tell you, and even though it is hard to believe, it is true.
Amy, sitting down: (to ???) Hey, nice to meet you! (to Sarah) Alright, what is it?
Sarah: I come from the future of a parallel universe.
Amy: ...Huh?
Sarah: That robot we faced, Mecha, I followed it to this universe. However, I thought I had destroyed it. When I was going back to my own universe, something must have gone wrong, and I was sent back in time as well. That also made me lose my memory, for some reason.
Amy: This is alot to take in...
Sarah: Oh, and as I was saying, this is my father, Knuckles.
Knuckles: ...Hi.
Amy, a little nervous: Your father is Knuckles? ...(oh, great...)
Knuckles: Is there something I need to know?
Sarah: Well, I wouldn't say NEED, but it could probably wait.
Knuckles, slightly angry: Are you hiding something?
Sarah: Well, yes, but Amy doesn't want anyone to know yet, so I ain't talking.
Amy: Well... uh... Hey, I just remembered, we need to go to the castle now.
Sarah: Dad, stay here.
Knuckles: Fine...

At the castle, there was an announcement: Something was about to hit Mobius. And if it hit, it could destroy all life on the planet. Everyone was quite worried about that. It seemed that the only way to take it out would be for Sonic to go into his Super form, but without access to the Chaos Emeralds, there was nothing they could do. But Sarah got an idea, and rushed out, with Amy following out of curiosity.

(Back at Amy's house)
Sarah: Dad, there's a situation. We need the Chaos Emeralds from our universe.
Knuckles: What? Why?
Sarah: There is no time! You need to go, now!
Knuckles: Fine.

And so Knuckles went back to his universe, and after a long while, he returned, with Sarah and Amy waiting for them.

Knuckles: Here, the Emeralds. Now, what do you want with them?
Amy: Wait, why are they different colors?
Sarah: Does it matter? We need to get back to the castle!

And so they got back. Everyone were confused about Sarah and the Emeralds, but Sonic took them anyway and transformed. There was less time than expected. Amy wasn't sure that he would get there in time.

Super Sonic sped towards the large black sphere of energy. It was just as big as he expected, which worried him. He focused all of his own energy to take out this energy. As he was about to crash into the dark orb, he couldn't help but think that it would be painful.
It was, but It wasn't as bad as he expected. The energy quickly dissipated, and Sonic still had enough to get to the ground safely. He breathed a sigh of relief.

At the castle, everyone were overjoyed. Amy and Sarah quickly embraced.

Amy: Thank goodness! I thought we were going to die...
Sarah: Nah, things always work out for the best.

Amy, caught up in the excitement, kissed Sarah. There was suddenly silence, as nobody expected this. Amy, sensing awkwardness, quickly looked up at the stares she was getting. Sarah, however, felt annoyed. Amy, suddenly realising that now everyone knew about their relationship, ran from the room in embarrassment.

Sarah: This is just great...

Sarah chased after her. When Amy got home, she started crying, making Knuckles feel very awkward. Sarah came in quickly after her, and tried to comfort her.

Sarah: Amy, it's alright. They were going to find out sooner or later,
Amy: But... It wasn't time yet! I wanted to be sure...
Sarah: Ah, that explains it. Amy, love isn't about "being sure". It's about taking risks, and about following your heart. Yeah, I know it sounds cheesy, but it's true.
Amy, no longer crying: I guess you're right. I love you Sarah.
Sarah: And I love you.
They kiss.
Knuckles, meanwhile, is feeling alot more awkward.

Knuckles: This complicates things...
Sarah: How so?
Knuckles: You need to come back home. And because she is from the past, you cannot take her with you.
Sarah: Oh no...
Knuckles: ...I'm sorry, but you are the next guardian. You need to finish your training, and assume your role as guardian afterward.
Sarah: ...I guess you're right.
Amy: Will I ever see you again?
Sarah: I don't know...
Knuckles: Wait, actually, this could work. I could continue some of your training here. Afterwards, you can visit here whenever you wanted. I'll tell you what: When you officially become guardian, I might let you bring her with you.
Sarah: Really? Thanks, dad, you're the best!
She hugs him.
Amy: I still think this is very confusing.
Sarah: Well, I'll try to explain it the best I can...
