The impotent, overcast sun had just begun to kiss the stadium roof, suspended over the screaming stands by impressively carved stone pillars. The day had not brought more snow, though a brisk wind had begun to sail across the arenas, bringing the promise of a cold evening and a frigid night.

The braziers were blazing once more at the edges of the arena once more, melting the ice that had formed after the conclusion of the first match. The snow layer that not outright melted now covered a layer of mired peat and gravel. The arenas had not been attended to; Auriel decided the peculiar conditions of the arena would add a psychological factor. They were still functional, to a degree, and it wouldn't until they were properly shattered by the combatant's conditions.

And so it was that the heralds led the two combatants onto the field, the audience roaring in approval. Arena Five had some of the least, yet some of the most striking damage done to it. One of the logs near the center of the arena was nothing more than a charred stump one fourth its original size. Another log has had two feet shredded off. Wooden splinters litter the ground near the logs in question. There was no blood to hint at who or what might have been hurt in the match. All in all, the arena left more questions than answers.

"I hope I needn't repeat myself, gentlesirs," the herald said smoothly. "Please assume your places on either side of the arena and we'll begin."

Without further ado, the herald began his introduction. "My lords, my ladies, welcome to the second match of the tournament! We have for you today two new combatants, one of whom has proved their mettle and valor. In the hither corner, I give to you a man who has performed well this far, and is no doubt seeking his second victory in the tournament. My lords and ladies, please welcome Cheau Boucher!"

"And in the thither corner, I give to you a man who would well seek to deny Cheau his second victory, and in so doing, secure a victory for himself! My lords and ladies, please welcome Garret Ranson!"

The audience cheered, and fanfare soared as the herald bowed to the crowd above him. Turning away, he called to the combatants, "Salute your opponent, then begin!"

Garret moved to his side of the field. He turned as instructed and brought his arm up to his forehead in salute. While he waited for his opponent to do the same, he began to look over him, try to figure out anything he could. From the looks of it, he just looked like a regular old dog, but considering the competitors of this tournament, he probably spit fire or some such nonsense. He seemed to have a clawed glove, but no real long-range weaponry. Garret might just have the advantage in this fight, and he needed one dearly.

Although staying in his corner, Garret tried to gain the best position to fire at his opponent as soon as the match started. Any advantage, any tactical gain, any thing that could put Garret in a position of power over the other one, or even put him at the same level, anything like that, Garret needed it. He'd realized something in his previous match, he was not a fighter. He wasn't, but he was against fighters. Against people who knew how to fight and dodge and attack and defend. Garret knew very little of this, but he'd be dammed if he was going to let this stop him from trying his best to overpower this guy. his expression was on of pure concentration. His mind was working harder than it had in the entire tournament. He was ready to begin.

"Yeah yeah," Cheau ambled past the herald, patting him on the shoulder with Dip and picking at his gums with one of Fenrir's metallic claws and eyeing the new arena, if "new" could be applied at that point. Several of the pillars were either ripped to pieces or simple reduced to ash, and the ground was still as broken and torn as a newly-tilled field. What did they have in here? Dragons?...

... Probably.

"Nice establishment you lot got goin'," he mumbled, dropping his hand as his eyes rolled on the next topic of interest: his opponent. He was another kid, but this one didn't seem to be a wannabe, blood-doped samurai, and this made Cheau that much happier. This time his opponent was, apparently, a gunslinger. A gun was all he had on him, as far as the dog could see, so that's what Cheau went with.

By the time he finished examining his new situation, the herald had stopped his heralding and the crowd had gotten their hoot-and-hollaring to the pre-match maximum, already a continuous explosion of yells and claps and bang. His ears folded against the noise, and he returned Garret's salute with one of his own and a nod.

Cheau didn't waste time trying to egg the bear into fighting; Garret had a gun. Guns meant long range, long range meant Cheau was already at the disadvantage, because the two combatants were already on opposite sides of the arena. He'd have to close the gap, literally and figuratively. He'd barely finished dropping his hand out of the salute before he dematerialized. In an instant, Black Dog shot forward, seemingly slithering a foot or so over ground like some giant, serpentine spectre. It was a speedy maneuver; the phantasm could cover the distance between itself and Garret in a matter of seconds, and time was already ticking...

And then the Dog turned into a foggy black monster of death. Typical. At an earlier point this might have been a shock, but as was previously stated, Garret was expecting something like this. He instantly took off running, he needed distance between this...thing, and himself. While he ran, he fired off some shots, though they weren't aimed as well as he they could've been. After pulling the trigger a fifth time, he decided to focus more on running. He matched the Dog's serpentine pattern, weaving in between the various logs around the field.

[Sorry for the hold up. This week has been aweful hectic.. but it's almost over. I should be able to get more posts in this weekend, just bear with me]

Unless Garret could move at highway speed, he'd have a hard time keeping his distance with the spectre. Black Dog charged forward, its speed and maneuvering keeping it well out of reach of the bear's rounds. Yet as it closed in on the youngster, himself weaving around one log, Black Dog veered the opposite way, curling around the same, large post as Cheau dropped out of it. He intended to meet Garret on the other side of the scorched pillar, Dip shooting out to grab the arm holding the fancy gun...

Focused on running, Garret veered around the wooden post until sight of a hand came out in front of it. Luckily, the melted snow had made the ground a bit wet, and a thin layer of ice still covered the area a bit. Putting his foot out to stop his forward motion, Garret managed to slide under the hand at the expense of some of his balance. He placed a hand on the ground to aid in re-gaining his pose, and made a bit of a backwards jump away from his opponent to face him while also getting further away.

Slippery little devil, wasn't he?

Cheau stayed close; he didn't want to lose any of the ground he'd already gained. As Garret slid under Cheau's grapple, the dog turned with him, catching the charred post with a dip and a foot to stabilize his movement on the slippery ground and also launch back the way the bear had gone, staying only a couple feet away.

Garret jumped into the air, and Cheau took advantage. As his opponent came down to land, the hellhound aimed a side kick at his stomach, hoping to wind him.

Garrett's feet had not but touched the ground when he was delivered a swift kick to the stomach. He stumbled back, gasping for breath, but as soon a s he could get a hold on his bearings, he fired at the dog, trying to move as fast as one can with no oxygen. That is to say, very slow.

The crowd and herald roared as the first hit of the match connected, the deafening boom of cheers and yells hitting Cheau like a punch against his chest and smack across his ears. He'd really need to look into ear plugs; the glory just wasn't worth losing his hearing over. But, that would have to wait until after this match. For now, he folded his ears against the noise and dropped out of the side kick; this was as good a chance as he'd get to grab that gun...

Bring his foot down from the kick, Cheau hopped sideways, keeping up with the bear as he stumbled back. Now, for his next number, he'd pluck that firearm right out of Garret's grasp- or, at least, that's what his plan had been. He reached out with Dip to do exactly that, just as Garret brought the gun up to fire. The scene unfolded faster than the hellhound could even manage to say:

"Oh fu-" and the gun fired. Luckily, Cheau's outstretched, armored hand caught the first few rounds, the bullets smacking against the metallic surface and rebounding away, some hopefully back towards Garret. But even Cheau didn't have the strength to hold back automatic fire, and the force of the shots threw his hand and its owner backwards.

Cursing, he ducked for cover, back around the charred beam, ears pounding from both the gun fire and an added bonus: the crowd's unreasonably loud cheering. It took him a moment to notice his own shirt, ripped across the front and quickly turning a particular shade of red. His eye twitched as the herald confirmed:

"One point to Garret Ranson!"

Oh, Hell no. Oh, it was on!

The clanging of the bullets hitting the dog's metal arm felt louder than they actually were, at least for Garret, because this meant one thing that he didn't particularly like; Ricochet. And sure enough, after the dog had been blown backward, a piercing pain struck Garret, he had successfully managed to injure himself with his own weapon.

Thankfully, the shot was not in vain, because as the herald soon announced, Cheau had been struck as well. A hit was good, but considering his opponent's previous attack, this wasn't any normal mobian, the shot probably did not cripple him as much as just piss him off. Garret ran more, distance was key here, and he couldn't get enough with his guy. Though once he considered himself a fare bit away, he did climb onto one of the larger posts to see if he could get a look at his opponent behind his wooden guard.

Ah, Hell.

Cheau clutched an armored hand to his chest, the wound talking just enough to convince the dog not to make such risky maneuvers ever again, at least until the next match. Or in five minutes. Or exactly next in succession...

... Actually, Cheau did not take any notes whatsoever, but the graze did smart.

And at least it hadn't been in vain; Garret had successfully shot himself.

But now was not the time to gloat. Cheau needed a new plan, and Garret had suplied him with the groundwork. As Garret shot off, Cheau slammed his bloodied glove against the already half-charred stump.

SMACK. POP! The sanguine handprint ignited against the bark, wood splintering and smoking as the flames began to crawl away from the bloody mark. Cheau took off a split second later, veering away from Garret's path and reaching another beam just as his opponent began to clamber up his own.

WHAM. CRACK. Never let good blood go to waste. The second large post ignited upon contact with the fiery ichor. Cheau darted off again as smoke poured off the two beams, wafting upwards and filling the arena. He reached a third beam as Garret hit the top of his own.

BAM. HISS. Resin crackled and embers flew away. The first two poles were already blazing, and the third was on its way to finishing off the perfect smoke screen. Cheau positioned it between himself and Garret; all that was left was the bear's own stump, but that would have to wait until the air got a bit thick...

To his surprise, the wooden posts of the arena, well, all besides a few near him, had been ignited, dirty grey smoke now billowing from he un-clean burn. It' didn't take a genius to figure out this trick, the dog was smoking up the area, trying to blind him. How exactly he managed to light the wood on fire was still a mystery, hell, he probably breathed fire along side his freaky black monster attack and being bloody fast.

There wasn't much Garret could do about this tactic. If anything, all he could do was jump of this wooden time bomb before it lit fire too. He did so and backed up. The air closer to the ground was still relatively clear, but the sky was all but grey now. He prepared another gun shot, his eyes darting in every direction, trying to anticipate the dog's attack. As soon as he saw some other color than musky grey, he was going to pump it with lead.
