![]() Developer: Hudson Soft, Sonic Team. Genre: Family fun game. Like Mario Party. Release Date: November 13 2000 Number of Players: 1-4 Platforms: Dreamcast Sonic Shuffle is a game that was made to combat Mario Party. We all know that Sonic and Mario have been fighting for the chair of the best video game. Sonic Shuffle has 5 stages and each has its own uniqueness. It is more fun if you have more people playing it. And is great for little kids (that do not get too mad). To win you must get Emblems. Emblems are achieved in different ways. General Gameplay: You start out all together on a space. Lumina asks you if she wants to explain the game field. It only talks about some of the things on the board, like Dolphin spaces make you travel, and you can only cross turtlers when they are not in the water. She then shows you the first part of the Precioustone location. It is always in the same spot in every area. The Precioustones also are always put in a selected order, from Opal to Diamond then the Final Precioustone which is in the same spot every time for each stage and is always a unique monster. Getting Emblems: The best way to get a Emblem is to defeat a Precioustone which then is added into your collection. There are 7 Precioustones and you can have more then 1. Emblems are handed out at the end of the game. The second way is to have the most rings, you can only get one Emblem for this. Another way is to beat the final event, which is different for every stage (not including the last one in story mode). A different way to win a Emblem is to beat the quest/event. It is different for every stage. Versus only; you can get a Emblem by winning the most duels. Characters: Playable characters and their special abilities include: Sonic: When Sonic plays the same card twice, he gets to move double of what the card said. In battle when he plays the "S" Card, the card will roll from 1-7. Amy: Amy has special spaces with a picture of her hammer on it, it allowed to from one of those spaces to the next one, only she can cross it. In battle when she uses a "S" card it turns into a 5 and just stays a 5. Tails: Tails has special labeled with his tails on them. These spaces are ones only he can use which allow him to fly over gaps. In battle when he uses a "S" card he can choose two different cards and uses both of them in battle. Knuckles: Special spaces with a wall and a picture of him on it allowed him to climb that wall. No one else can climb the wall. When he uses a "S" in battle. It allows him to pick two different cards and use them both in battle. Cards: Cards are what are used to travel spaces, they range from 1 to 6. There are 4 "1" cards, 4 "2" cards, 4 "3" cards, and so on. Special cards include the Special card, also known as a "S" card there are only 3 of these. When used you have three choices in movement. To switch decks with another player. To roll from 1 - 7 and move that many spaces. And the third one I forgot. I will play it and find out. In battle Special cards allow the ability of the character to be used. The Eggman card is a card you normally do not want there is only one of them (unless one of his dastardly inventions was used) and it goes to the player that did not get a "S" card. When used in movement, it will spin a roulette with Eggman saying, "Hehehe, what Evil Invention will I use this time?" I do not know everything the Eggman card does. But some of the things it does do are: Forces you to lose 1 turn. Lose ALL your rings. Places a monster on the field. Give everyone a swap force-jewel. Make all the spaces minus ring spaces for one players. Allows your cards to be seen by everyone. Forces you to swap with someone. Makes all your cards Eggman cards for 3 turns. Makes all the 1 cards 4 cards. When used in battle it makes you lose automatically. When all the cards are used up they shuffle back into your hand in a random order for all the players. Spaces: Rings spaces either give you rings or take away rings. When you land on a ring space more then once, it combos to give you extra rings or take away more rings. Combos up to 5. Event spaces: These either play a Mini Game or a Mini Event. Mini games are always happy unless the Mini game is one you suck at. The Mini Events are like cut scenes for your character. You may get choices on what to do. Sometimes it is luck of change. Sometimes it all depends on your character. Transportation spaces: They are always orange. They teleport you to a random spot on the map. They vary from Dolphins, to Lifts, to Trolly Logs, to Helicopters, and Rainbows (yes Rainbows). Battle Spaces: Battle spaces initiate battles with a monster. The health the monster has varies from what number Precioustone you are at. It is always under 5 and above 1. In order to win the fight, you pick a card. It when then start a roulette start at 1 and going to the highest. So if you picked a 4 it would rotate 1-4. Choose quickly because it gets faster every time you do not click it. Precioustone spaces: The spaces do nothing unless have a Precioustone or Void on them. If they have a Precioustone, it will engage you in battle. If if it is a Void space (will have a black orb floating over it) then Void will appear and steal someone's Precioustone and give it to you for 50 rings. You can choose no. Or if you select someone without a Precioustone then you just wasted 50 rings. This is on a roulette. If you did get a Precioustone via Void. You will then be teleported to a random spot. Quest spaces: Each stage has a specific event relative to it. The person who completes it gets a Emblem. Force-Jewels: Force Jewels Alter the game play in many different ways and forms. They can be the defining line between winning and losing. Some Force Jewels include: Max, Turbo, Hi, and normal Speederalds that allow you to use more then 1 card in battle or movement. Max-Speederalds use 5 cards and normal Speederalds use 2. There is a Sonic-Speederald, but that just makes you move 30 spaces in a random direction. So it could take you in circles. 6 and 1 Force March: Makes the person move 6 or 1 space. Carbuncle: It eats your Force Jewels and you can't get rid of it until it eats itself (when you have no more force jewels). Precioussite: Roll a 1 and go straight to the Precioustone. Warpite: Warps everyone to a random space. Medium: Warps everyone to your space. Swap Jewel: Allows you to swap spaces with another player. Magnifite: Makes someone on the roulette bigger. Reducite: Makes someone on the roulette smaller. The extra unlockable characters and their abilities: Super Sonic: Like Sonic, he can move double the card amount if he plays the same card twice. But with the added ability that if he draws that same card a third and if a fourth time can be used again with the same results. In battle when he uses a "S" card, it plays a card that rolls 4-6. E-102 Gamma: The robot is back with the ability like no other. If he plays a card 4-6 and lands on a minus ring space, it will not affect him. When playing a "S" card in battle, he automatically gets 2 cards played for him that are 1-3 (these do not consume cards in-game). Chao: Of all the cutest things to put into the game this was one of them. It has no special movement abilities because of its special battle move. When it uses a "S" card in battle, if he loses the battle he will not be hit. Big the cat: Big the cat has one of the most useful moves. When he plays a 6, he can land on any space between 1-6. Once that "S" card is played in battle, it adds one to the card he plays. I.E: Instead of a 3 card, it becomes a 4. While playing the game there are Accidents that happen, I will call them special games. They are unique to the area you are in. This also includes the Final game. Which is different from the normal ones and if you win it, you get a Emblem. The gameplay is broken down into a few modes which include Story and Versus. Story: When you first start the game it shows Sonic on top of a building. Then he sees a card flying and runs after it. This card has a number on it. Eventually Sonic if followed by his friends, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles. Soon they enter a portal and are sent into another world. A brief picture is shown of all the stages but the last one. After going through the starting screen and selecting all the necessities you can then start story mode. It starts out with you picking your available story characters. Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy. After you picked your character you select the level of the computers and then you start. It shows some scenes of the group talking to Lumina Flowlight, your guide into the new world of Maginaryworld. The world of everyone's dreams. It talks about Illumina who guarded the Precioustone which powered the world and kept it into existence. Soon Void came and touched the Precioustone and it shattered and scattered among the dreams. This made Illumina break apart and diminish, she sent Lumina to recover them. Lumina then called on Sonic and his friends. After some dialogue they go into the first stage, Emerald Coast. Emerald cost is a dream for those that love the sun, the beach and tanning. But the broken Precioustone has caused the world to start becoming a frozen wasteland (personally, I prefer the cold WAY over the heat). After beating the places you get special cut-scenes for your character. You MUST win in story mode to continue. When you beat a place in story mode, you can use the rings you win which are added up after you beat a place to buy pictures in the Sonic Room. Versus Mode: The rings you get in versus will not be added into the sonic room. In versus you can play as the normal characters plus the unlockable characters. You can also have multiple human players playing in versus mode. A few games are added into versus mode. To make it fair they added luck of chance, memory games, and a slot machine game. The game is random when you start a versus game. Duels are where both characters are put into a duel. Duels are activated when players land on the same space. The space must be a ring or a battle space. Who ever wins gets rings determined by how much they won. You can choose how many Precioustones there are going to be. If you don't have time to play all 7, you can have a minimum of 2 Precioustones to a max of 7. You can choose whichever stage you want. Duels: When a duel starts the rules are stated at the bottom. Press "A" to get a card, "B" to give that card to your friend. 1 cards are replaced with 4 cards (that are activated by the Eggman card in-game) and act as a negative number. "S" cards give you double the amount of a card for a short amount of time. The eggman card sets your card amount to 0 (can be very helpful), stuns you for a bit and adds cards to the game. Depending on the rules, sometimes you want the lowest number and sometimes the highest. You can go negative. Turn games: In versus mode, it won't be fair if the first players ALWAYS gets to go first. So they added darts, slot machines, and cards to make it more fair. In Darts there will be a target of Eggmans face. The person who gets closest to the middle wins. The face will move and if you miss then you will be put at the end. If you miss and someone else misses after you then you get to go ahead of them. Speed and Luck are key. In cards there will be 16 cards dealt. They will list from higher number cards to lower number cards. Get the highest number to go first. In slots you will start at 999 and when the game starts it will count down. The person who gets closest to 000 wins. It is possible to get 000 on the nose. Go past 000 and your slot machine explodes. Making you go to the end. Stages: Emerald Coast: Uses Dolphins for transportation. Some spaces will be removed to cut of paths. In the end a fish with a ship on it will fly away making it harder to get to the last Precioustone. You can go underwater in this so after 5 turns underwater you will lose a turn and be taken to a specific location, there are special spaces under water where you can breath. There are also turtles that will go underwater and come up, they are spaces you can cross only when they are above water. The special quest is you will find a beached Dolphin, if you take it to a specific spot it will find it's mommy and they will swim away. Special games are when you are on a beach. One has you walk around and gather rings without falling into the Ocean. The other has the same goal, but to not be burnt by the sun. To no be burnt by the sun you must have the umbrella. Other players will want that umbrella so guard it well. a The final game is that all the ice melts and causes a Tsunami, you must ride the wave and beat everyone to the end. To do that just be near the edge of the top of the wave. Fire Bird: This is a dream for those that want freedom. You are on a ship and the ship is falling apart. It has 4 wings, two on bottom, two on top. During the game, the wings of the ship wither either burst into flames or fall off. If you are in the burst of flames you will lose 30 rings, if it falls of and you are on it you lose 50 rings. The Dolphin space has been replaced with a fork lift. There are no special spaces, only that when you get to the last 2 Precioustones, all the spaces change increasing the amount of battle and minus ring spaces. The special event is there is a oil leak on the ship. You are to get as fast as you can to stop it on a specific space. Only if you don't stop it nothing happens. The special games are when you are on a ship and on the wing of a ship. While on a ship, you are to duck the bridges that fly over you while gathering rings. Sometimes it is better to duck then to gather rings. The one on the wing is where you must rapidly hit the "A" button to stay from falling off the wing. Hit it too much and you will fall off the front of the wing. The final game is the Fire Bird is exploding (the ship) you jump of it and start sky diving. The first one to the hot air ballon wins. Nature Zone: This is the dream for those that want to be one with nature. You are in this jungle that is starting to be occupied with these weird pillars. They are slowly destroying the forrest. Special spaces are Crocodiles, when they have their mouth closed you can cross them, when they are open you can't cross them. Sometimes the pillars will fall blocking off paths. There are also spaces on water, sometimes you will land on the space normally. Or sometimes you will fall into the water and be moved to a specific place. The Fork Lift has been replaced with the Trolly Log. The Special event in this area is required in order to beat it. You get a key that will open the path to the last Precioustone. First one to win it gets the Emblem. Special games are Ring of Fire and Croc attack. In Ring of fire, you must jump in rings of fire to get the rings inside of them. In Croc attack, you must rapidly hit the "A" button to get out. The Croc attack is one of the HARDEST games to beat. The Final Game is there is a fissure coming right behind you. You must run away from it until it dies down. Just a race, do not run into rocks. Before trees appear they will be marked with a exclamation point showing where it will appear. You can jump over rocks but are more likely to be hit by them because they are not shown until you see them. Riot Train: This is a dream for those that love adventure and traveling. The train you are on has no destination and has become chaotic. Special Spaces include spinning arrows. If you land on it nothing will happen. But if you try to run past it then it will either let you continue forward or send you back. The train being chaotic eventually loses parts of the train, and sometimes gains a extra part. If you are stuck on a part that got separated, a travel space would be useful. Travel spaces are now a Helicopter. Special games include train heist and train run. Train heist is where you are on a train and get a lasso. Hit the corresponding button to receive rings. The bigger the bag, the more rings inside. In train run you must make it to the end of the train before you fall of a train cart. Train carts will fall off from the train and slow down. Sometimes objects will get in your way and it is important to duck. First one to the end wins. The Final Game is where the train is now at full speed and out of control. At the end of the train path is a a broken rail road track that leads into a empty pit. You must hit the corresponding button to stop the train. It will change every so often. Fourth Dimension Space: The last and final stage. The stage is set up to be instead of like a board game, but the inside of a sphere. It gets really easy to get lost in this area. Special spaces is the black hole. The last Precioustone is located to where you have to go past a black hole. It will suck you up and spit you out on the other side of the area if you do not play it right. The Travel space is now a rainbow. There is only one special game. You are on platforms that will disappear while more add. When the platforms connect, they will either add rings or fire. Avoid the fire and get rings. If you fall you will just be put back into the game, but lose rings. The Final Game is irrelevant in story mode. In this stage just get as many rings as you can. You can't lose. In Versus mode, get as many rings as you can in this game. The Final game is the Void battle. Void transforms into a monster. He will use very strong attacks. Stay as far away from his as possible. To attack, pillars will pop up and start to glow. Jump on a pillar and rings will shot from his head to the platform that was hit first. After defeating him then the Final Final game is over. Sonic Room: This is a place where at first is pretty much nothing. There is Sonic sitting in a chair and sometimes Knuckles, Tails, and Amy will be seen out side his window. A empty fish tank, and a picture book next to sonic. The picture book holds pictures of their times in Maginaryland. You need rings to unlock those pictures. After doing so you can use a stereo, toy box, and computer. Fish tank: The more fish and liveliness in there, the more mini games you have played. Plants: These will start to be seen when you play mini events. I am still missing 2 Mini events. Stereo: Play sounds that you hear in the game. Including music. Toy box: This is my favorite thing in the game. It allows you to play all the Mini games you unlocked. So if there is a Mini game you suck at, you can play it over and over again. If there is a game you just really like. You can play that too. You can also change who plays what part to change the way your part in the mini game is played. So you could be the giant crushing players, or you could be the one trying to take the giant down. Computer: Changes the game. Allows Japanese spaces to be used. Spoilers: These are tips and guides on how to unlock characters and extra stuff. Do not look if you do not want too. Unlocking the characters: Spoiler: click to toggle Unlocking the dolls: Spoiler: click to toggle Unlocking the toy box: Spoiler: click to toggle Unlocking the Computer: Spoiler: click to toggle My personal Ratings: Graphics: 8/10 Even if it is for Dreamcast, the Dreamcast is still epic. The reason it is not a 9/10 because if you look at the car in the toy box, it has square wheels. Gameplay: 7/10 It is very fun and can have many twists. It can also get frustrating and make you want to break the game. A great family game. Music: Always different for every stage and unique for every game. 10/10 Longevity: There is always something different you can get. Plus it is a good game for families. 9/10 You will come back. Overall: 9/10 I guarantee you will enjoy this. If there is something I am missing feel free to add. I am not adding Mini games because there are so many of them. There is a lot to this game. I wanted to make this post before I went back to real life again. Those in the sonic blast community are always welcoming and supportive when I get back. But here it is, the guide/review on Sonic Shuffle. Edited by Vern, Mar 26 2011, 03:26 PM.

A good review; however, you might want to proofread it once more. My main problem with this review is that it was more a guide than anything, which it should not be. The main part should be the part after "My personal ratings:" With a longer explanation of strengths and weaknesses. You could probably condense alot of this into the review section anyway. P.S: Glad you think of us in such high regard! Edited by Fwiss, Mar 26 2011, 06:57 PM.

Thanks for the info. I wanted it more as a guide tho. I have had a lot of trouble in this game myself. And I felt it was needed. I read the Rules for Reviewing and it said it had to be helpful. And I was a little in a rush. I will re-edit it.

I liked the review. But for me I just don't like the game. I don't understand why but I've never been that big of a fan of party games, only a few Mario Party games, and that was it. I can't get into any party games whatsoever. But everyone has the games they like and the games they don't like. |

i agree. the other fact is its really hard to progress into the story if you dont have the most emeralds. having to fight something before obtaining the emerald is ridiculous. though it was a good idea and definitely worth trying once or twice. but being that its too much like mario party kind of tunes me out. i did like the graphics, music, level map layouts, character roster and story as well as some of the mini games. although, like i said, its the fact that it seems to much like mario party just doesnt interest me that much. |

Sonic Shuffle was one of my favourite Sonic games. I wish they re-made it for the game cube at the time, or even the Xbox 360 this time round. i know there was a similar kind of game in Sonic and the Secret Rings, but it just wasn't as good. =L Anyway, it was always a good game for a group of people, or even to play with someone who never usually plays video games, but at the same time the Mini games were there to keep the current Sonic game fans satisfied during play. I'd give it a 9/10. Super Sonic being an unlock-able playable character just sold it for me. |
