I love how Blockbuster could have bought out the company for less than it owes to other companies now.. Because it stupidly didn't make this move, it basically dug its own grave, having to play catchup in the online rental industry once Flix took off.. then Gamefly finished off the other half of its revenue. Blockbuster is now selling itself for a little over 200 Million I believe and probably isn't long for this world, at least not as a brick and mortar institution... much like Hollywood Video.

We used to have 5 stores in this area, and all of them closed down a year ago at least. Very sad, I liked browsing, which is one thing an internet institution cannot emulate.

What sucks is that the 1/3 of locations closed included my local Blockbuster. Now I either have to go to a different store or start using Netflix. And chances are most of the games my local store had that I enjoyed, every other Blockbuster near me doesn't carry them. And since Netflix doesn't provide rental games, I'm pretty much screwed in that department. I never used Blockbuster to rent movies so Netflix won't be useful to me at all.
www.gameaccess.ca.

That might work for you, it's kind of like Canadian GameFly.
I live in the US, that probably won't work. But thanks, I forgot GameFly existed. I could use that. :D

UK guy here... Netflix? Bleh, this thread is irrelevant to my needs. :P
Ha. Same here MoD.

Although I will say that Blockbuster doesn't seem to be doing too bad here none of the block busters (there aren't many) near where I live and work have remained open. The only thing that showed to me that they were in financial difficulty was when they sold the company I currently work for to a rival.

Try Gamestop?

It's a bit disappointing to me as well, though I haven't noticed ANY closures in the city I live in.
Truefax.

I haven't seen any Blockbusters closing around here. Plenty of the smaller rental places have though.

On a side note, I actually quite like Netflix in Canada. It's pretty cool to be able to watch movies with my friends over Xbox Live.
I think the one near Westbrook might be shutting down, since it always seems so empty and is pretty hard to get to with all the LRT construction. Also its not Netflix Canada itself I dislike, it's the lack of movies.
True that. :/

I still watch a lot of the older movies on there, but it'd be nice if they had some of the newer stuff.
When my friend tried it, it lagged like hell, the movies were overpriced as hell, and they had no selection.

Thus, Netflix = Fail IMO.

i'm actually really sorry bout this

I think we only have one Blockbuster out here now. I know we had a Hollywood Video and Blockbuster all over the place. I think every single one is closed, except for the one that's all away across town. I liked actually going out and renting stuff, used to love going to the nearby rental place and getting some genesis games for the friends to play when we hung out.

I even rented AOStH videos and the original Japanese Ring and Grudge, it was nice.

While it is sad that I'll probably never get to enjoy walking through a video store again in the future, the alternative is just so much better I hardly care.

To rent a movie at a video store, I'd probably have to spend $5 on ONE rental, plus $3 in gas to drive to the store, drive back home, drive to the store to drop off the rental, and then drive back home again. And if I don't like my rental, well, I'm not getting that time or money back. Because I'll lose out on $8 and a lot of time on a bad film, I'm strongly encouraged to stick strictly to genres and types of films I know I will like, so my tastes stay narrowly focused.

Compare to Netflix, which is $9 a month if you stick strictly to digital downloads. No wasted time driving to the video store, almost no waiting to watch any movie available, and if you don't like the movie you can just switch instantly with no penalty. Yeah, it's mostly older stuff, but I really don't mind. The year a film was made almost never discourages me from looking into it if I'm interested. I'm also becoming something of a cinema connoisseur and watching a lot of films I'd normally pass over, since there's much less waste if you choose a bad film with Netflix. Being free to experiment more alone makes getting Netflix worth it for me.

Don't know about Canada, but down here where I live the network performance is wonderful and I hardly have any issues watching just about anything.

Blockbuster > Netflix...

1) Netflix instant streaming doesn't have anything new on it and really has a poor selection compared to a video store.
2) Who wants to wait a day or two for a DVD to arrive in snail mail?
3) Blockbuster has a deal with movie studios to where they get new movies out sooner than anyone else.

On another note, Blockbuster isn't going anywhere since they have their own internet streaming service now and Blockbuster Boxes everywhere(which are better than Redbox too).

I still can't use this.

The entire business is filing for bankruptcy, Metallix. That will effect the quality and availability of their streaming service, not just the number of stores they have.

Too little too late for Blockbuster, I suppose. xP

In my old hometown Blockbuster died when I was still a kid, which was a little piece of nostalgia officially lost. The great thing is, I live in Missouri now and they're about three years behind the curve. They still have Hollywood Videos. I haven't the heart to tell 'em.

General Motors filed for bankruptcy and they came back stronger than they were before, albeit with help.

All Blockbuster is doing is Chapter 11, they will still have money after they move out of bankruptcy. Like I said they aren't going to disappear. Many companies file for bankruptcy before it's too late and are completely out of money so they can come back lean while keeping all of their assets.

GM was also helped by a lot of Stimulus money..
I don't think Blockbuster is going totally under just yet, but they are well on their way out which is disappointing, been renting from them for as long as I can remember.

Correction: Blockbuster doesn't actually have an exit strategy for the bankruptcy in place at this time and have been talking about both being sold off or simply liquidating by filing for Chapter 7, which in turn means they're pretty much considering a complete shutdown a viable possibility. And I don't see how they'll remain in the race for the long-term when Netflix's services have pretty much dominated the scene for years.

In my humble opinion, Blockbuster is done. If it somehow stays around, it will be a mere shell of its former self not worth mentioning.
