How Netflix DESTROYED Blockbuster; The End of the Brick and Mortar Rental Era

I love how Blockbuster could have bought out the company for less than it owes to other companies now.. Because it stupidly didn't make this move, it basically dug its own grave, having to play catchup in the online rental industry once Flix took off.. then Gamefly finished off the other half of its revenue. Blockbuster is now selling itself for a little over 200 Million I believe and probably isn't long for this world, at least not as a brick and mortar institution... much like Hollywood Video.

Too bad Netflix in Canada is absolutely awful. To be honest I've never really used Blockbuster, but I remember when I was little it was always fun to rent a game every now and then.

We all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us
Blockbusters were getting closed down from left to right over here. Not much of a shocker. It is quite sad. There's just something exciting about driving to the video store and checking out the movies and games and maybe picking up some candy. It makes me wonder if video stores in general will be a thing of the past. Im truly hoping not since we would pretty much be obligated to subscribe to Netflix. Hm. Some digital age.

I still can't use this.

The test was simple:

(a) Adapt
(b) Die

Blockbuster chose B.

Call me stubborn, but I wonder about the proposed end of physical media. There is still an inherent value in having a physical copy of something, (limited and special editions specifically), that I'm not confident can be recreated fully with digital mediums, hence why I'm not convinced the end is near. Digital files are not tangible, nor are they difficult to distribute. Pirates are going to drive the inherent value of digital media down while people are still happy to pay $30 plus for a single Blu-Ray of one film, and I can't see this being rectified anytime soon.

Netflix is utter shit in Canada, and after seeing how crappy it was at my friend's house, I'll never be inclined to use it.

Not that I've gone to Blockbuster in ages... But the one near my house is still open, might as well see if I can buy a copy of Heathers.

But I agree that Blockbuster should have at least tried to set up streaming.
i'm actually really sorry bout this

What sucks is that the 1/3 of locations closed included my local Blockbuster. Now I either have to go to a different store or start using Netflix. And chances are most of the games my local store had that I enjoyed, every other Blockbuster near me doesn't carry them. And since Netflix doesn't provide rental games, I'm pretty much screwed in that department. I never used Blockbuster to rent movies so Netflix won't be useful to me at all.

Try Gamestop?

It's a bit disappointing to me as well, though I haven't noticed ANY closures in the city I live in.

Truefax.

I haven't seen any Blockbusters closing around here. Plenty of the smaller rental places have though.

On a side note, I actually quite like Netflix in Canada. It's pretty cool to be able to watch movies with my friends over Xbox Live.

Yeah, my local Blockbuster shut down, too. It kind of sucks, because there are a few movies I want to watch currently, but I don't rent movie enough to order a Netflix plan, and my on-demand service doesn't list them yet. Netflix is a total monopoly. -.-

I think the one near Westbrook might be shutting down, since it always seems so empty and is pretty hard to get to with all the LRT construction. Also its not Netflix Canada itself I dislike, it's the lack of movies.

True that. :/

I still watch a lot of the older movies on there, but it'd be nice if they had some of the newer stuff.

www.gameaccess.ca.

That might work for you, it's kind of like Canadian GameFly.

Anyway, my local Blockbuster (Broadway in Everett) is finally shutting down, just realized today AFTER posting this when I went to use a rental coupon that is now worthless.. Bought 3 Blu-Rays (Zombieland, District 9, Saw VI) for $18.

There is still a decent Blockbuster over by the mall where most of the stuff seems to be getting consolidated, though I can imagine it being closed in 2012 along with the rest of the stores in the country.

I don't know about you guys, but LITERALLY every Blockbuster in my area is now either closed or closing. This news has been known in my community for a while.

It's true, Blockbuster used to be a family thing for me, We'd go and rent a movie for "Family Movie Night", and maybe I'd be lucky and rent a game too.

Of course, now I have OnDemand and ROMs so, no real loss.:P
