Sonic and Cars Don't Mix; ...Or do they?

People always complain about how cars don't belong in Sonic games, saying that Sonic has legs and he's faster than any car, but I just realized something. Save Colors, just about every main game since Adventure has had Sonic or some other character or characters placed in some form of wheeled vehicle.

Sonic Adventure had the cars in Twinkle Park. These cars got better acceleration according you how many rings you currently had. While the controls were a bit loose, they were quite fun to play around with.

Sonic Adventure 2 gave us the Kart stages. These were, in my opinion, the best execution of the car idea out of all the main games, mainly because you could drift. I had a blast playing these stages in story mode and I had even more fun with the Kart Racing minigame.

Sonic Heroes gave us an on-rail bobsled portion in certain stages. There's not much to say here. I don't really find the bobsleds to be good or bad, it's just steering and jumping for about ten to thirty seconds and then you move on the to the next part of the stage. Eh.

The concept of vehicles REALLY expanded in Shadow the Hedgehog, however. There were military trucks, armored cars, and sports cars, just to name the actual CARS. On top of that, it also featured motorcycles, flying aliens, walkers, and hovercrafts. While some don't work as well as they should, there are some that were a very interesting and fun addition to the game. I certainly didn't mind having these things around.

And then there was '06. Hoo boy, '06. This was probably where the vehicles mechanic was at its absolute worst. Like many other parts of the game, the vehicles Shadow rode on were glitchy, unreliable, and overall not very fun at all. The buggy flipped over much too easily, the bike's controls felt unnecessarily slippery, the hang-glider portions felt pointless, and the hovercraft had pretty much the same problem the buggy did, only in this thing flipping over can be fatal.

And in Unleashed we had the bobsleds/coaster cars in Cool Edge and EggmanLand. Like Heroes, not much to say, other than that these things can be annoying, mainly because you get sent FLYING forward whenever you get hit, which is liable to send you soaring off the stage and into the abyss.

Probably the closest thing Sonic ever had to a vehicle portion in Colors was the roller coasters in Asteroid Coaster. These were completely on-rail portions that consisted of jumping to get rings or jumping onto an adjacent coaster so you would not fall to your doom. Not much to say.

So yeah. While most of the time they weren't exactly fun, vehicles have kind of become a staple of the Sonic series. And yet they're one of the major things people complain about.

Ironic, eh?

You forgot to give at least a small mention Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing. I am disappoint. :P

Anyway, that's a very good observation. I cannot see why it's so wrong (according to many) for Sonic to be in a car. Just because he's several times faster then one? Pfft, nothing wrong with it to me.

*facepalm* I was going to mention that, but it somehow slipped my mind.

Anyway, All-Stars Racing was amazing. 'Nuff said.

In all honesty, the only games that I've seen where cars are a main problem is racing games, and in those the reason is simple, Sonic on foot is A) faster than sound and thus has an un-fair advantage or B) too small t be fair.

I have a feeling that if games like Sega all-stars racing were on foot, no on would have a problem. I will say however, that this, like most sonic controversy, does spawn a few funny videos.

When Sonic wants to go slower he uses a wheeled vehicle.

I see your point there Mio, personally I've questioned it a few times but after getting nothing but shrugs, I shrugged the idea off myself.

Just cause Sonic loves to run, doesnt mean he hates driving :D

Very good overview across the board, Mio. I've never felt the inclusion of vehicles in the game as a hinderance to my enjoyment. I really cant see the fan's argument.

Precisely.

But at the end of the day, I don't think it really matters what Sonic wants to do. It's what the fans want to do that really matters, I guess. Since Sonic can already run fast, it can make the game a bit tedious in sections where you had to do move in a way that isn't running at top speed.

And besides, Sonic loves to run. I don't think he exactly enjoys vehicles, either. Shadow would kind of make sense, tho'. It's never stated that running is Shadow's outright favorite thing to do, and it's possible that he actually enjoys commandeering vehicles more than moving on-foot. Y'never know.

while its true that sonic can run at high speeds the cars are fun to play around with,
ive never played the shadow stages in sonic 06 but id like to
plus the all-stars racing and even sonic drifts 1 and 2 were really fun, same with the kart racing in sonic adventure 2 battle
if you have time to worry then you have time to run and never look back

Trust me, as much as I like '06, Shadow's stages especially, the vehicles were bad.

What I've wondered is why fans are making such a smear campaign against cars because sonic is faster, but no ilk has given, to my knowledge, about the extremegear. Sonic is likely faster, but he enjoys riding them, there are even scooters and others vehicles he can ride on, but the fans dont seem to complain. Again, to my knowledge.

Whut.

So many people hate Riders just because Sonic is on a hoverboard that it's not even funny.

My blanket excuse for Sonic traveling by car, sled, or board is this: Sonic likes to have fun. I'm sure any driver can contest that when they first got their license, they wanted to drive everywhere- not because it was convent- but because it was just so darn fun to drive! Sonic feels the same way, I suppose. He likes to run, but that doesn't mean he can't feel the thrill of coasters or snowboarding...

Besides, whoever says this doesn't look dang stylish has issues :P
