Mickey Rooney granted restraining order against stepson
Mickey Rooney with wife Jan Christopher Aber is the son of Rooney's eighth wife, Jan Chamberlin (l)

US actor Mickey Rooney has been granted a temporary restraining order that requires his stepson to stay at least 100 yards away from him and his home.

Lawyers for the 90-year-old star allege that Christopher Aber, 52, has been "verbally abusive" to him.

Court documents claim that Mr Aber "threatens, intimidates, bullies and harasses" the former child actor.

Rooney is "effectively a prisoner in his home", the order - approved by a Los Angeles judge on Monday - states.

Mr Aber is the son of Rooney's eighth wife, Jan Chamberlin, whom he married in 1978.

According to court documents, he has allegedly deprived Rooney of medication and food and has confiscated his passport and other identification cards.

'Extremely fearful'

"Mickey is extremely fearful that Chris will become physically threatening against Mickey and may even attempt to kidnap Mickey from his home," the actor's lawyers said.

Rooney also accuses Mr Aber of forcing him to make personal appearances and sign financial documents without reading them.

"All I want to do is live a peaceful life, to regain my life and be happy," Rooney said in a statement.

The actor, who rose to fame as a child star in the 1930s and 1940s, received an honorary Oscar in 1983 "in recognition of his 50 years of versatility".

Seriously? What kind of knob goes and treats a person of age like this? Depriving them of their meds, their food and other things? If you get off on power tripping over old people, I'd say that you've got a pretty sick mind. This whole preconception of elderly people being as the same fragile state as kids is a whole bunch of bunk. They've experienced a whole heck of a lot more than your average kid has and their physical fragility can be a non-issue if they take care of their body right. (In fact I was reading rather ironically a day or so ago about a 70 or 80 year old body builder who continues to pump iron).

Doesn't really help though if they're being treated like crap by their family. I'm fairly pleased that Mr. Rooney got tired of this guy's abuse and rose up to face it. It would've been a very disturbing thing to read about if he'd died because of this "treatment". One should also hope that poor Mickey can at least get over the emotional scars this must've inflicted upon him.

This sort of thing sickens me and makes my blood boil with sheer hatred for those sickos. I hate bullies but I especially hate people who thrive on picking on elderly folk this is why I would NEVER put anyone in my family in a home because if I ever found out someone picked on someone in my family or deprived them or food, threatened them or whatever I would be in jail for the rest of my life because I'd beat the crap out of them until they were in a coma.

I think a temporary restraining order isn't good enough to be honest this should be permanent at the very least. It's sickening what he did to that poor man. I know not all old folk are weak and whatever but a lot are and those are the ones that need protection and stuff from idiots like this in the world that abuse their power. Oh I hope this 52 year old ends up old and fragile and gets a taste of his own medicine.

That's just horrible. I've seen things like this before, and this is no worse than the last few stories I saw, but it still gets to me every time... To me, I feel like the stepson is doing this for financial gain, not for emotional gratification. That's usually the case, anyway.

I only just realized the stepson's like 52 years old. It just aggravates the crime even further in my eyes.

Cy - why is it more aggravating that the stepson is 52 years old? How does that change things? Even if he was eighteen or seventy it isn't an excuse for his behaviour.

Fwiss I do agree most of the time it is for financial gratification but by the same taken there is some what a psychological/emotional element to bullying too.
