The sun arose the next morning over a whitened landscape. The cafeteria had prepared a light breakfast for those who wished to eat before their fight, and bonfire pits had been dug at intervals into the ground. The snowstorm had largely blown itself out; only a slight flurry floated gently downward from the sky. The door to the arena battlegrounds stood closed, and Auriel stood silently in front of them, his gauntleted hands clasped behind his waist.

When all were gathered, he spoke,

"There be one o' ye who'll be th' Champion this time 'round. Many o' ye'll fight fer it, but only one'll claim it. Oi pose these questions t' ye: Who then 'as th' right t' call us victor? O' who'll th' poets adore in prose an' song when th' dust 'as settled? 'Tis naught but th' roaring crowd, th' audience who takes note; th' final opinion that crowns heroes an' makes tyrants rot in cold dungeons. D' ye 'ear 'em? D' ye 'ear their clamour?"

Auriel raised a hand above him; at this signal, choreographed fireworks soared up from the castle turret in the middle of the battleground, and split the air with thunder and noise. The audience in the nearby distance roared their approval.

Auriel let his arm fall to his side, and glanced up and down the group of assembled warriors. "Go, an' win glory fer yerself, yer family, country, or whomever. Yer destiny awaits." The doors behind him opened to reveal a stone passageway, held up by reinforced wood buttresses and lit by brass lanterns.

Inside the hallway were doors, next to which heralds were standing, calling out names.

"You there! Are you Garret Ranson? Oh, I should hope so. And you, you must be Miles William Prower...? Yes, that's you; I recognize you from Ser Auriel's description. Oh, I hope we'll not offend if we just refer to you by your nom du guerre. Come on then, let's get you two in your places."

The herald promptly leads you to the arena, the snow crunching under his paws. There as a layer of snow about four inches thick, covering what appeared to be a layer of peat and gravel. Wooden logs were posted up from the ground, seemingly at random and offering a modicum of cover. To counter the heat, eight large iron braziers on metal legs were set against the perimeter of the arena, blazing hot from the fires that had been burning in them since early morning. The snow under them had already melted, turning the peat into a thick, muddy bog several feet out from the braziers.

"When I say, you'll head to the opposite sides of the arena, you two. Next to the fenceposts, I've got them marked. You, stand there, and you over there. Now then, you've understood that you've ten blows on your opponent to win. Torso (that includes the shoulders, mind) and thighs count as one strike, the head, two. Only seven points to be counted by ranged. If you've a mind to surrender, shout your intentions, that the judges, your opponent, and myself can hear them. Do you two understand?" After hearing the replies, the herald nodded, and turned to the arena audience.

"My Lords, My Ladies, welcome to the first round of the Fourth SB Tournament! Announcing their debut match, I give you Garret Ranson and Cy-Fox!"

The audience erupted in applause and cheering, and the fanfare horns blew their salutation. Bowing, the herald turned to the combatants. "Head to your starting positions, salute your opponent, then begin!"

Another cursed light shone brightly, and Garett was practically blinded by this point. His head was in a daze, and he could have very easily passed out.

That is, had an intense pain not jabbed him in his Right shoulder. Adrenalin pumped into his veins and got his to move away from furthur bullet wounds, but he still could feel the movement leaving his arm. He reached over to touch the wound. Pulling his hand back, he could see and smell the blood dripping from the hole. Still, pain faded into rage, and rage faded into a burning fighting spirit. He pulled his own gun out to line up with the fox's helmet, firing of two blasts and then ducking away for cover.

TING! CRACK!

Miles shook his helmeted head, now featuring two welts in the armor from the deflections and turned it to track Garett. He swung the SMG around and emptied the rest of the magazine at him, ejected it and fed in the rifle nano-module, 5.56x45mm NATO nano-module and matching ammo from his leg compartment.

Bullets continued to whiz by Garret, at last one managed to fly clean through his ear, leaving a rather perfect hole, though the perfection was soon soaked in blood. The pain did not register in Garrett's current state.

He quickly went over the match in his head. He was sure he'd heard two of his first shots hit the fox in the chest, then there had been the flash bangs and he had hit the fox twice more. That was 4 hits, but his last two had been head shots, so he now had...

6 Hits? The Fox had hit him once in the side, once in the shoulder, and now once in the ear, assuming the ear counted as a head shot, he was leading his opponent by two. But he could only make one more ranged shot, the other 3 hits would have to be dealt by melee.

Rushing the fox would be suicide, Garrett was not fast nor strong, but if he could stun him, he might be able to land a few hits. Still moving from gunfire, Garrett stabilized his bracelet and gave it another flick, releasing another sound wave.

The initial resonance wave was picked up by his sensors, prompting the emergency breakup of his armor again. Shouldering the now modified Model 10 rifle, he lined Garret up and shot off a burst for his center mass.

Another bullet ran by Garret, this time his leg, forming another perfect wound, and another hit point to his opponent. However, the fox's armor had dispersed due to the sonic wave, and if he could land a shot now, he'd finally be able to deal some real damage.

Garret fired another three times. This time, he fired and ran directly at the fox, hoping the knock-back would give him enough time to land a melee hit.

As Garret rushed him, the nanometal armor formed around Miles' chest and part of his abdomen, with the limbs being of a lower priority. Center mass was what he would've went for and they didn't call it smart armor for nothing. A round was lodged into his soft armor, causing him to stagger backwards, but as the armor filled in, the bullet was flung out. Throwing down the rifle, he drew his right arm back, with it transforming back into the armored state as he thrust his fist forward. Smokey Bear, meet Sledgehammer Fox.

The fist contacted with Garret's stomach, effectivly knocking the wind out of him, he was thrown back onto the ground. However, this did not stop the bear, and once he had caught his breath again, he tried again, putting out a sonic wave and rushing at the fox.

Miles' armor began to shake violently in response to the wave, but Garret's rush, which he calculated to be most likely for melee, offered a possibility for another hit like the one he'd dealt the bear earlier. He bent his body backwards, put the armor in shutdown mode and then rocked forward, rushing at the bear. When they would make contact, he would bring the armor back online and thrash that damn bear until his head popped off and bled honey.

Garret's opponent seemed to return Garret's wish for hand-to-hand combat, as he began to rush forward as well.It was like a cliche movie moment, two fighters runing toward eachother to meet in the middle. Garret had to holister his weapon, considering the hand he held it in was his only good arm. Fumbling to do so while running, he put it away just in time to get close to the fox. With a hopefull sigh, he clenched his fist and brought his arm back in preperation.

ARMOR ONLINE

The armor suit formed back around the cyborg as he closed the distance to Garret. His HUD indicated that the bear's other arm was injured, leaving him with one to use. Miles had two, and even then he was now being sealed back into the hard nanometal armor. He outweighed the bear by a considerable sum. It was time to execute protocol 'Blunt Trauma'.

Priority One: Eliminate the sonic bracelet. Then his gun. He drew his right hand back and drove it into Garret's good shoulder with as much force that he could safely exert. Unless Mobians were getting their skeletons loaded with Adamantium, he was in for one hell of a compound fracture.

Cy-Fox's Score: Spelling and grammar were fine. You had the upper hand for this whole match, essentially a no-contest here. Nothing to really say, since the whole battle only seemed to really get going right near the end.

Zak's Score: Spelling and grammar were fine. Your character was at a severe disadvantage, fighting against Cy. I liked how you played it. Again, not much to say though, since it only seemed to be getting started near the end for me.

In Short: Both well played, but there wasn't a whole lot of action until the end.

POINTS: 1 for Cy.
i'm actually really sorry bout this

  • Fair Play:
My only concern was that there didn't seem to be any ammo count going on, but there was no excessive use of weapons fire (imo). Nothing out of the ordinary here.
    Edge:Tie

  • Composition
Once the fight kicked off, the posts got real short, but I didn't see a problem with them, as the posts were clear and concise, from both players. No glaring spelling and grammar errors that I found.
    Edge: Tie

  • Adaptation to the Environment
There really wasn't much. Cover was used and made advantage of, and there was a mention of the audience from Garret, but other than that, the posts were really centered on the players. This is okay, but I would have expected to see more on how the environment effected your gameplay. Was the snow slippery? did the flashbangs and the bullets throw up any snow spray, minor or otherwise? did the bullets that missed keep sailing forever or did they hit something?
    Edge: Garret

  • Entertainment Value
I must say, you were both entertaining in your own way. I really can't say who did a better job, as the posts were about the same quality past the intro posts.
    Edge: Tie

Final call: I'm gonna have to side with Garret on this one. One point for him.

Ok, so the points stand at Cy with 7, and Garret with 8, although I'd like to clarify with Cy to see if that bullet that struck him when his shield was up actually hit his chest. The resolution of that impact was worded a bit weird to me, and I'll have to reread to doublecheck the scores. will update as soon as possible.

ok nvm, I got the clarification. the scores stand with Cy at 7 hits, and Garret also has 7 hits. Congratulations for being the first tie-breaker in the tourney!

After the judges weighed in for their favorite, the herald nodded, then declared loudly, "The scores stand equal between Cy-fox and Garret Ranson! Combatants, drop your weapons and prepare for hand-to-hand combat! The first man to land a hit by close combat will win this match!"

The cyborg swiveled around upon hearing the words "drop your weapons". Both leg compartments opened up and spat out nanomodules and ammunition cartridges. They said all weapons after all, he thought. Could carve someone up with a bullet after all. The Blunt Trauma instance had faded out due to the relaxation period during judging. The fox restarted the protocol, whose progress bar filled up with orange. One hit to a critical region and that'd be all. Glancing at the bear, he considered his target.

Head's small, and most likely obvious. He'll defend that first, thinking I'll pop him like a watermelon.
Arms aren't too vital.
Center mass is the largest region and easiest to strike.

Center mass it is, Miles thought.

...are they joking? Garret couldn't deal with this! His opponent was a huge cyborg Fox! He would be torn apart as soon as the fight began!

Alright...Garret thought. This isn't going to be like the last few minutes. all he needs is one hit, so I just have to dodge until the time is right. The issue with this plan being that Garret's "Adrenalin Rush" Had worn off. he was feeling the pain of each of his wounds at their full force now, including, no, especially his arm. None the less, he lifted himself off from his sitting position and made his way to a fighting stance. Garret's only strength over this guy was being able to keep his distance and still attack, now, he wasn't to sure he could finish this one.
