The sun arose the next morning over a whitened landscape. The cafeteria had prepared a light breakfast for those who wished to eat before their fight, and bonfire pits had been dug at intervals into the ground. The snowstorm had largely blown itself out; only a slight flurry floated gently downward from the sky. The door to the arena battlegrounds stood closed, and Auriel stood silently in front of them, his gauntleted hands clasped behind his waist. When all were gathered, he spoke, "There be one o' ye who'll be th' Champion this time 'round. Many o' ye'll fight fer it, but only one'll claim it. Oi pose these questions t' ye: Who then 'as th' right t' call us victor? O' who'll th' poets adore in prose an' song when th' dust 'as settled? 'Tis naught but th' roaring crowd, th' audience who takes note; th' final opinion that crowns heroes an' makes tyrants rot in cold dungeons. D' ye 'ear 'em? D' ye 'ear their clamour?" Auriel raised a hand above him; at this signal, choreographed fireworks soared up from the castle turret in the middle of the battleground, and split the air with thunder and noise. The audience in the nearby distance roared their approval. Auriel let his arm fall to his side, and glanced up and down the group of assembled warriors. "Go, an' win glory fer yerself, yer family, country, or whomever. Yer destiny awaits." The doors behind him opened to reveal a stone passageway, held up by reinforced wood buttresses and lit by brass lanterns. Inside the hallway were doors, next to which heralds were standing, calling out names. "You there! Are you Janicelia Xachiri? Oh, I should hope so. And you, you must be..... oh my. You definitely must be Kelsey Hadley. Come on then, let's get you two in your places." The herald promptly leads you to the arena, the snow crunching under his paws. There as a layer of snow about four inches thick, covering what appeared to be a layer of peat and gravel. Wooden logs were posted up from the ground, seemingly at random and offering a modicum of cover. To counter the heat, eight large iron braziers on metal legs were set against the perimeter of the arena, blazing hot from the fires that had been burning in them since early morning. The snow under them had already melted, turning the peat into a thick, muddy bog several feet out from the braziers. "When I say, you'll head to the opposite sides of the arena, you two. Next to the fenceposts, I've got them marked. You, stand there, and you over there. Now then, you've understood that you've ten blows on your opponent to win. Torso (that includes the shoulders, mind) and thighs count as one strike, the head, two. Only seven points to be counted by ranged. If you've a mind to surrender, shout your intentions, that the judges, your opponent, and myself can hear them. Do you two understand?" After hearing the replies, the herald nodded, and turned to the arena audience. "My Lords, My Ladies, welcome to the first round of the Fourth SB Tournament! Announcing their debut match, I give you Janicelia Xachiri and Kelsey Hadley!" The audience erupted in applause and cheering. Bowing, the herald turned to the combatants. "Head to your starting positions, salute your opponent, then begin!" Edited by Talancir D'Landior, Feb 12 2011, 07:58 PM.

As the beastman was escorted to her arena she couldn't help but eye the weapon her current opponent choose to carry throughout the tournament. The beastman has very little way to conceal the sheer size of her double-sided axe. She adjusted the belts around her legs before running her freehand through her unkempt hair, listening to what their escort had to say. "Gods," Kelsey blurted upon stepping foot in her arena. The intense, arid heat coming from the iron braziers caught her completely off guard as she was expecting more of a cold climate battle. She crossed her arms in front of her body as she grabbed the ends of her coat and pulled, her head popping out of the collar end of the rough coat. Annoyed she began speaking to out to her fellow competitor, as she removed the shackle attached to her weapon and turning her coat outside in, "Really. I prepared myself for a winter fight" -she threw the coat against the wooden railing- "and we're greeted with this." Kelsey left out a sigh of disbelief, reattaching the shackle to her right arm. She tried to breath steady through the her bass drumming heart pounding against her belted chest. Her fingerless gloved hands settled along the handle of her battle axe as she breathed in the warm air. The beastman awaited for her opponent to make the first move as the match was finally underway. |

The herald came to the tense realization that Janicelia never made it to the arena. Worriedly, he looked up to the Judge's Box, where Auriel stood next to the railing. His face was a mask, yet he felt as worried as the herald looked. "Oi don' suppose she fell into somethin' somewhere...?" "You remember what you said 'bout the last one, Ser?" Samuel strode up from the shadows to stand next to the stoic knight. "There were dropouts in that one as well. Count yerself lucky that we've only had one so far." "Aye, but one is too much already." "Bah, you're worrying too much. Hey Yubraj!" From the shadows, a Nepalese snow leopard stepped out of the shadows, his arms crossed across his chest. "Hey, Samuel," the snow leopard replied. "Let me guess. Go search for the missing combatant, yeah?" "Well yeah. Auriel and Psyche's doing their thing, I'm doing the bonus matches, and Aldagar's fightin Godzilla. Who's the one one left making love to shadows?" "Oh, is that how it is?" "If ye'd be so kind, Yubraj," Auriel said, turning his head slightly in the snow leopard's direction. "Oi'd really appreciate it." Yubraj shrugged. "Can do," he replied, and made his way to the stairs heading down. "Kelsey Hadley," Auriel called out to the combatant below. "It seems that yer opponent 'as decided t' forfeit. Ye win by default, however Oi'm sure that's not what ye came here for. Ye came 'ere for a fight, so if ye wish it, a fight is what ye'll have." As he finished, Auriel gestured off to his side, where Samuel stood in full armor kit, hands on his sword hilts and grinning like a madman. Edited by Talancir D'Landior, Feb 16 2011, 09:50 PM.

The beastman looked up to the judges booth that towered over the arenas as they called to her, trying to decipher the judge's thick ascent. She gave a slightly nervous smile when lightly introducing a replacement, 'aye, full armor and all. It's been a while since I've face an opponent like that. But that smile. It's so. Creepy.' She flipped and firmly stabbed the top of her broad axe to the ground, splashing a bit of warm mud against her furry legs. Grabbing the wooden bottle from her side Kelsey lifted it up to the judges and bellowed out, "That I did!" before pouring it's contents into the wooden cup that capped the bottle. A half hearted smile came across her face. She wouldn't have minded walking into her next match completely fresh, but at the same time their the audience to please; as well as her desire to face some of the best combatants the tournament had to offer. |

The beastman assented to the match, and Samuel's eyes widened. Auriel nodded stoically to the combatant below. "So be it," he responded, then stepped back to reclaim his seat. Samuel guffawed, feeling quite chuffed with the turn of events. "Finally, I get some playtime!" Stepping back to give himself some distance, Samuel crouched, then stepped into a short sprint, vaulting himself over the railing into the arena, one floor below. His momentum caused himself to flip once in the air, and he completed the roll with his feet firmly under him. Both boots and leather gauntlets sunk into the crystallized snow, and the impact caused the peat and gravel layer below to depress. Samuel snorted before he stood, his breath misting ever so slightly with the close proximity to the ground. As he rose to his full height, he pulled his swords free from their sheaths, and held them up, blade over blade, above his head. "MY LORDS AND LADIES," Samuel roared to the audience. "ARE YOU READY FOR A WAR!!!" The audience's reply was thunderous. |

Kelsey rose her cup with the audience erupted in cheer and took a sips of her red drink before removing the clamp attached to her double-edge axe and slammed it tight into the closest wooden post. She decided, despite her opponent being fully armored, that she could take him out with her smaller axes. She grinned and spoke loud enough for her opponent to hear over the background noises made by the audience, "would you care for some?" she offered, tilting her cup side to side. The tension in the battle waiting to unfold mounted as the beastsman's nerves chapped her lips. However, her breathing remained steady. The heat that was being omitted into the arena was almost exactly the conditions she endured for a number of years doing manual labor on the farm, which built her current muscular stature. |
