A possible problem with SB's social structure; And a suggestion on how to fix it.

Strange, isn't it?
A major problem I have with this site as it is right now is that it's hard for people who aren't very well-known to get noticed. It seems like no one wants to read things posted by members who aren't very famous. I've seen RPs posted by unknown members which got zero signups before they were moved off the rfront page. My fan character has got zero replies and less than 50 views in the two days since it was posted, whereas a fan character posted less than a day earlier by Silv got 100+ views and several replies by that same time. How are less well-known members like me supposed to make ourselves known to the community and accumulate respect if no one bothers to check out the things we post? I've been on SB for quite a while now and barely anyone recognizes me.

From the way things are going now, it seems like SB is starting to undergo what Sonic Paradox underwent a while ago. I've seen it happen to several forum sites before. The famous and respected members grow more so until the non-famous members can barely be seen at all. Then the famous members start abusing the non-famous ones and ban them from increasingly large sections of the site until mostof them leave and the two thousand or so who are left just sit there, churning out increasingly suggestive flash animations involving Sonic showing his *censored* to the viewers, etc. and talking about how much they hate the new generation Sonic games while reminiscing about how great S3K was with its 16-bit graphics and its 45 minutes worth of unique glitch-demostration content. (I'm not trying to say that S3K was a bad game, it was quite good for a game that came out in 1994.)I just don't want the same kind of thing that happened to SP and SR to happen to SB, that's all.

We could fix this by having a filter that allows people to see topics arranged by the topic starter's post count, and making the filter fun to use, so people will want to take a look at the creative opinions, OCs, RPs, and other things that lesser-known members have to offer.

Christmas is back again

There are several other categories you ain't looking up.
First of all, we all have a life to take care of. Whether it's school, work or something else that keep us from looking all over the forum.
Second, we ain't looking down on new members, nether their work, including RP's that's been just added.

However once more, it comes to our real attendances. In fact the RP section have been pretty blunt with activity since the tournament started.
It's there all the action finds place.

Yet I don't think there's anything wrong with SB's social structure as you recall it.
Depends on the value of interest, not the member who post.

Paging Lilfate to the topic. If anyone can smell out this kind of trolling, it's him - and I'm unsure as to the authenticity of this example.

Sadly to say, MoD, this isn't a troll... Or rather, he isn't trying to be. Now, depending on his reaction will determine if he is just trolling cause he upset. Now, back on topic.

You contradict yourself, seeing as your very first fan character you posted got feed back. You posted two more, which got no comments at all. However, your fourth fan character got more comments then your first fan character topic. The fact that your post account tells me that you haven't posted much leaves me to believe that you expect to me famous and well known out of nowhere. People aren't just going to say, 'Hey, lets give this guy/girl more attention then everyone else.' To be honest, your argument sounds like your referring to Staff vs Members, seeing as how members can not ban another member. They can report and point a Staff member towards said member, but its the Staff members choice to do what need to be done to handle said post/member/situation.

I would advise that you not put yourself on a 'complain member' list, cause then you would be drawing wrong kind of attention.

To further answer your question on how come some members know other members more, is really simple... The Shack... The shack is where most of these connections are made, as well as posting a lot in various different topics. Debates in the Sonic related topics are also ways of getting noticed.

In short, post more in different topic. This isn't a life or death situation, no one is flaming you or giving you dirt about your characters, thus there is no reason to complain, in my opinion.

I still can't use this.

Staff just doesn't care enough to punish anyone over popularity; We're too lax to even bother being that petty. But if you incite unnecessary drama and screw up the atmosphere here, that's when banhammers start flying.

Second, a few topics that go unnoticed does not mean the end of the forum as we know it; Slippery slope very much. All it means those topics weren't interesting enough. If you want people to notice you, go into popular topics like the Shack and make a good impression.

All in all, you're making a mountain out of an anthill.

I object to your claims
Let me tell you a little story;

When I first came here two years ago, I was nobody. I was barely noticed, very few people - if any - talked to me, and really the only topic I made in the first few months that I was here that got more than one reply was (ironically) my welcome topic.

So, how did I end up where I am now?

By getting into the community.

Spend some time in the Shack, participate in some thoughtful debates, post in a variety of topics. Try to make yourself known.

Wait, I'm "popular"? ^_^ I'm so happy.... |3

Now, as other people have stated, RP section is running slow because of the tournament; people dont want to commit to something they can't fit in their schedule, ya know what i'm sayin? Also something you should learn the easy way, Barely ANYONE posts in the Fan Character section. I got some attention because It involved the tournament, that is all Not including my friends getting a bit hyped up to add stuff. XP

But like people say, Start to make yourself known in the community. It took me 7 months to get to where i am now, patience is something that you're missing. ^_^

I knew it was a bad idea to post this... Would a mod mind closing this topic?

Now see, you need to have optimism if you want to get noticed. Going about the topic like that doesn't show confidence and it....

Oh nevermind me. xD
