The Jaw-ggernaught of Justice.

Ok.... Ever since Goldeneye 007 released on the wii back in November '10, I was pretty excited, but skeptical at the same time. There it was- no doubt an attempted return to form, a possible remake of the 1997 N64 of the same name. However, I can tell you this....THE TWO TITLES ARE VERY DIFFERENT. First up, the new version has gotten an obvious facelift from its 1997 counterpart. with a new, reiterated storyline. However, some events and characters that happened and appeared in the original game were either omitted, or dramatically changed. For example, In the first mission, the dam, James is not alone. He is accompanied by his buddy, 006, known as Alec Trevelyan (who would...spoiler...become Janus.) The mechanics of the mission in question had dramatically changed. Before, You could just run around and shoot everyone, and everything would be honky-dory. But now, Stealth is the new run and gun here. You sneak up to the tower, grab a sniper rifle, and take out the now- alerted forces. Before, the guards would be none the wiser. But now, the guards are like dogs; they come when they hear you, or when they see you. However, i think that this is a welcomed added mechanic to this version of Goldeneye. If you ask me, it makes it more challenging. Don't get me wrong, the original was very fun too, but the wii version gives it just a LITTLE more realism in that department. Moving on, Let's talk graphics. Being a wii Game and all, it has the same kind of graphics that you'd expect. However, there are a lot of cool effects. For example, When you're taking hits, the screen will gradually turn redder and redder. And the more you're hit, the more details you get onscreen, like veins appearing on top, and ultimately. blood running down the entire screen, signalling that your goose is cooked. However, if you get to cover, and let yourself heal, Those effects will reverse, and the screen will be clear again. Also, when your reloading a weapon, the screen will blur just for a moment, then will clear. Ok...now gameplay. Nothing much to talk about here, except that the original format of the game has been tweaked slightly. Some locales have been changed, and some new ones have been added (not spoiling anything here...go get the game yourselves:cool: ) Also, there are 4 difficulty levels; Operative (very easy,) Agent (easy,) Secret Agent (normal,) 007 (Hard) and 007classic (very hard). Each difficluty has a set number of objectives that you must complete. However, 007 classic is the closest you'll get to playing the Goldeneye of old; you'll have body armor, but your health won't regenerate. As of this review, i'm on the 007 difficulty, and i'm doing well. Now, onwards to multiplayer. This was what put the original on the map. In this version, thankfully it pretty much hasn't changed. You can play as any of the characters you see in the single player campaign. Best of all, You can play as the classic villains, such as oddjob, Baron Samedi, Dr. No, and others, as well as Bond, Natalya, 006, and everyone else in-between. There is a wealth of modifiers that the original did not have (i don't think it did,) such as the ability to throw rubber grenades, which bounce around (very dangerous) to a mod called nick nack, which shrinks everyone down to three inches. while shrunk, they cannot vault over cover. 4 players can play, but online is where it really shines; up to 8 players can take part in fragging one another, with or with out friend codes! And as an added bonus, you can identify yourself as either part of M-I6, The russian Government, or Janus. And as you play multiplayer, you'll level up, and as you leel up, you can unlock new mods, new weapons to play with, and other things as well. Finally, the verdict. Given the choice between which one reigns supreme, the wii or N64 version, I'd have to say that it's...an open-ended question. I leave the answer to whoever played goldeneye wii or N64, and let them answer that for themselves. For me, it's both. I played both of them, and they're both very good. So having said that, You guys decide; the modern one? or the outdated one? Which one do you choose? |

Goldeneye Wii is just no match for the legacy left behind by Goldeneye N64. You want to know what my number one problem is? It's the cutscenes that pepper all the levels. Goldeneye is meant to be a game that's easy to replay over and over again, especially to improve how long it takes for you to clear each mission. But the Wii version has these unskippable cutscenes everywhere. It drives me nuts having to sit through like three or four minutes of cutscenes every time I play through a level. This is especially vexing if you're playing Time Trial mode, where cutscenes actually count towards your completion time. You're just wringing your hands, watching your precious time tick away as you watch the same cutscene for the umpteenth time again. My other problem is that Goldeneye Wii lacks the mystique and aura of the original Goldeneye. N64 Goldeneye had some special quality to it that no other game really got, while Goldeneye Wii just feels like Call of Duty in the Bond universe. You aim down sights now, you've got "Breach" moments when you enter rooms with a lot of enemies and everything goes slo mo, and of course the unskippable cutscenes. I really didn't like that. COD games are meant to be replaced every year by the new sequel. Edited by Nail Strafer, Jan 27 2011, 05:28 AM.

I disagree highly. It's as though it's trying to be Metal Gear Solid 3, and that's not cool, because it's Goldeneye and clearly not Metal Gear Anything. It's also doing it all wrong. If it were MORE like MGS 3, I'd probably complain more, but it's not, so I won't. They went and edited a game that was fine as it was, and I'm not okay with that at all. However, I respect your opinion, even though I disagree highly with it. |

While the game emphasizes stealth in most sections, I didn't feel like I was playing Metal Gear at all. Metal Gear Solid 3's stealth gameplay is a lot more detailed. You have different alert levels with appropriate enemy units, you have lots of options for slipping past or distracting guards, and you've got the camouflage system. In Goldeneye Wii, if a guard sees you or sees someone die in front of him, you have about two seconds to kill him before he sounds the alarm and everyone swarms on your position (even if they didn't see where the shots came from). But then you get to the next area, and the guards act like nothing happened in the previous room. I find the last bit to be particularly funny. You can be getting into car chases, blowing up fuel tankers, stepping in front of cameras, getting shot at by guys with RPGs (all of which happens in the very first level!). but as soon as you reach the next area and quiet down the guards are just chilling out like it's another day at work.
I haven't tried it and I don't think I'll bother with it. Call of Duty: Black Ops takes up all of my online multiplayer time, and I'm very much content with it. Besides, if Goldeneye Wii plays like single player, then that means it'll be just like playing Call of Duty multiplayer anyway. |
