There's been a lot of thrilling games that I've played through the years, some that have creeped me out in particular is F.E.A.R and Nazi Zombies. D:

What's the scariest video game you've ever played?

The very first "scary" game I played was a translated rom for the SNES game: Clock Tower: The First Fear. That game actually scared me witless I think I got three endings out of it though and then I just got too creeped out when I played it.

Other games I've found pretty darn scary or atmospheric enough to leave the room for a while or turn all my lights on where:

Bioshock
F.E.A.R
Condemned
Penumbra series
Call of Kthuhlu
Amnesia

Those games had me wetting myself even when I KNEW something bad was coming or going to happen I'd still jump or get nervous before it happened. xD

I have to second F.E.A.R there, the other ones I haven't heard of, apart from Bioshock. xD

You would think that video games would get less scary with time like horror movies do, but it's the opposite... D: *hides behind curtain*

Doom 3 and Dead Space, that's it I think.
Dead Space was the scariest I've played.

The movement of the creatures + that music + darkness = scary. The beginning of it was the scariest, running away from the monsters getting to the elevator.

It's all good until the music's all quiet, your player is breathing really quickly, and you're just like "crap. something bad is going to happen." xD

In F.E.A.R the light would flicker, and then BAM, the freaky ass girl would be standing right in front of you. D:

I'd have to say Silent Hill 3. The horror games on PS2 are much scarier than the games now days, it's almost as if they are watered down. Fatal Frame is also a very good one.

Siren Blood Curse is also a good one by today's standards.

F.E.A.R. That right there is some serious nightmare fuel, as has apparently been unanimously agreed upon. And Alma ain't the only scary thing in that game; the things that jump out of the puddles and drag you in (and shredded that poor team-mate to bits...), the invisible enemies, and so on and so forth.

How does FEAR 1 compare to FEAR 2? Because I've only played 2, and I don't remember being all that frightened by it. Perhaps it's because your main enemies are regular or cloned human soldiers with guns, and if you've played any FPS game you know exactly what to expect from them. There were some cool bits when Alma started messing with reality around you, but you were always warned in advance by your HUD flickering.

But I do agree oh so much on Dead Space. Resident Evil 3 and Nemesis scared the pants off me, but that's because it was my first game in the survival horror series. After that I played survival horror games for years (More Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Siren, Alone in the Dark, etc.) and knew pretty much how all the tricks and tropes went.

So fast forward about nine years, and I play Dead Space for the first time. It was the first survival horror game in a very long time to truly make me feel afraid again, and I consider that a very impressive feat. What makes it so good is the general atmosphere and your enemies. The necromorphs are very fast and have very good AI, which makes them truly scary to fight against. At just about any point, they can jump out of the many ventilation ducts all over the ship. Plus if you try to run from them, they'll just jump in an air duct and catch up with you again at another one. This means you have to be on your toes at all times, and the dark, rusty ship with the ambient music amplifies the mood considerably.

And let's not forget when you're in an oxygenless environment, and the only noises you can hear are the ones inside your suit. Then you REALLY have to keep your eyes open, because you won't hear any enemies coming at all.

Each type of necromorph has some way to make your life hell in a hurry too. The standard Slasher's really fast and will close the distance in a hurry. Pregnants require you to have steady aim...even as you're being attacked by other enemies. And the one I find the most frightening is the Infector, because when one appears you know that you'll be fighting a horde of necromorphs fast if you don't kill it on the spot. So whenever I hear the flapping of its wings, a fresh surge of panic flies right through my system.

The necromorphs really do make the game, and I think it's some of the best enemy design I've ever seen. Very cool and scary looking...each type is a legitimate threat...but in their own unique ways.

What is the difference between a duck?

FEAR never really scared me, most of the "scary" parts were Alma sequences and the only one that really sorta freaked me out was the bloody ceiling.

Lets see.. as far as scary is concerned I'd definately have to give a nod to any Silent Hill game, Dead Space was freaky, Heavy Rain did have some pretty "jump-out-at-you" scary moments.. but my all time scariest game has got to be Fatal Frame, especially FF2: Crimson Butterfly.

Actually, for me it was Doom. The original.
But then again, I love the music in Sonic CD US, especially the two that are generally considered Nightmare Fuel, so...
