In regards to certain sonic games

First of all, I gotta say what's up to you guys? My aunts PC was out for a while so I couldn't get on the internet, and that was some months ago, but I'm back now. Anyway, on with the topic:

Recently, someone has emailed me about how he heard about my ban from the hell hole: the Sega forums. A few PMs later about what was still going on, he said that people were displeased with modern fans. I never really got a answer on why but he did say this that modern fans were tools for buying "crap" from sega, even bigger tools then some self righteous group of old-school fans who spam them for liking games like Shadow the Hedgehog or the more infamous to the modern haters, Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. So I get to thinking to myself, how are modern sonic fans tools? It just seems like that group of fans is being persecuted just for buying the games that other people didn't like. I mean, if you don't like sports games, then you would have to do the same to people who buy every NFL game that comes out, despite not being that much different then the last game.

Any thoughts from you guys?

X)

I still can't use this.

Certain fans, regardless of their preferences, are simply out-and-out dicks. The guy who said that is one of them. Nothing else needs to be discussed about this.

I was trying to add something meaningful to this conversation, but this statment here kinda sums everything up.

These kind of messages are why I hate being a new Sonic fan. Almost half the fanbase ridicules you for just enjoying one game that they didn't. It's so ridiculous.

It does seem though that the fan-base is divided some what there are the retro-ones and the modern-ones and then there are the "inbetweeners" who like aspects of both but they are not common; the other two can rarely come to an agreement on any game that comes out.

SEGA and Sonic Team have their work cut out for them as they try to please everyone and most times that is just impossible.

Some fans are a lot worse than others and like Bliz said some fans are just out-and-out dicks so there is no real expectation for them. Don't worry about sweeping statements like that.

Just a general note, but I think this idea that people who like both modern and classic aspects are a rare breed aids in widening the rift the fanbase has, simply because the thought only serves to further polarize the two major sides. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find people who do and actually hate every single Sonic-related entity made in certain eras versus people who can enjoy different things throughout the hedgehog's history. The fans who actually tow their respective side are probably the fringe.

See, me, I don't hate the classic games, I just don't think they're as good as stuff like Sonic Unleashed. 3 and Knuckles is on my top five Sonic games list. But sometimes I wonder if new fans are being so put off by retro fanboys that they won't even look at old Sonic games, let alone try them. :/

It's somewhat sad that everything seems to be black and white within certain groups in the fanbase. For instance, it seems to be an an unforgivable sin among retro fans if you enjoy a modern game more than the classic series- if you do then you have poor taste in games. Likewise, its an unforgivable sin among modern fans if you prefer the classic model over the the modern one- if you do you're a whiner who can't see through your nostalgia-tinted glasses.

It is quite sad isn't it Leafy?

People tend to think because I prefer the retro games that I think all modern games are guff, but that is really not true because I really enjoyed Sonic Adventure, SA2B and Sonic Heroes. Plus whilst people hate to admit it bar the obvious issues with Sonic 06 I liked that too and I kind of enjoyed the semi-nostaligia buzz from playing Sonic Unleashed day levels. I enjoy a good gaming experience when it is given to me. I just prefer the older ones because they bring back happy memories for me. I don't hate anyone or shout abuse because someone has, God forbid, different tastes to me!

I find the divide in the fandom silly.

I object to your claims
It's times like this where I'm glad I'm a Universal Sonic fan and enjoy a variety of aspects from the series....

Though...I do consider myself sort of an odd one out in the fandom...

We all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us
Just gotta say Im also one that enjoys both old and new school Sonic games. I admit I suck pretty bad at the 2D games (cant get past like the 3rd zone in each game it seems like XD) but their fun and the zones seem well thought out. Now Im more of a new-school Sonic fan since SA2B really got me into the franchise, but I dont see why we cant have best of both worlds. The arguements are just silly :/

I think most modern fans get the flak because "classic" fans want a scapegoat for the reason Sonic "sucks" now. Honestly the comment sounds like stereotypical "Sonic sucks now because a bunch of children like it and we all know children are willing to buy crap."

I dunno, last I checked Sonic was a platformer, a genre that is most popular with children. And I'm sure most of the people who first played Sonic 1 (or whatever classic Sonic game got them into the series) fit into the same target demographic they now bash.

I don't really think the fanbase is as black and white as people may think either, I think the problem is that most people see the two extremes (argue?) and just assume you are either one or the other.

I love the classics, well most of them. After SA2 I have felt that the experience I was expecting from Sonic Team was diminishing a bit, but I just try to have faith that they'll learn from mistakes and get the franchise back on a successful track.

Though, I do prefer the classic Sonic design when it comes to the side-scrolling adventures, but I wouldn't make it a ridiculous case out of it like some fans.

Hi, welcome to the real world, people hate you for what you like. That's how it is. It's a cold, hard fact, but there are good people who don't mind your stranger tastes, and there are jerks who will attack you for it. It isn't relegated to Sonic or even video games. You're gay, you deal with homophobes. You like MSU, a UofM fan will maul you like a rabid wolverine. You like Ozzy Osbourne, you're a Satanist in someone's eyes. There is no interest one can have that isn't scorned by someone else. All you can do is hold your middle finger high and do your thing.

Okay, maybe not LITERALLY hold your middle finger high, but still.

Anyways. Another point to make is this: In spite of the clearly polarized fanbase, it's quite plausible there aren't as many arguing as it seems. I find that the louder one is, the bigger one seems. Coupled with the number of websites around, one person can be loud on one site, but totalling his Internet presence, he'd be an almost literal cacophony of crazy.

It's eternally tragic that that which is magic be killed at the end of the glorious chase. From young seals to great whales, from waters to wood, they will fall just like leaves in the wind. With perfumes and fur coats and trophies on walls, what a hell of a race to call men.

Is it not the case that most of the "loud" ones get banned on these varying websites for being loud and abusive towards others who do not hold the same belief as him/her?

Normally people get scolded pretty quickly by the less "angry" fans and told to shut the hell up for acting like a twerp towards others and their opinions.

Oh I don't know Havoc whilst Sonic as a sprite being all small and tubby is cute I kind of like him with slightly longer legs as it makes him seem faster or that he is covering more ground than usual. It's all aesthetics of course, if it's nice to look at you can draw people in to give it a shot. I doubt a small pudgy hedgehog would draw in as many people to play it these days.
