![]() Developer: Nintendo EAD Genre: Racing Release Date: April 10, 2008 Number of Players: 1-4 On Screen. 1-2 Online Play Platforms: Nintendo Wii It seems that whatever the Italian plumber seems to do, he always stands out as the best. He was a tennis prodigy, a golf pro, a homerun king, a basketball star, and even appeared in other games such as the SSX series as one of the fastest snowboarders around. Of all the things he's been able to do though, aside from jumping on turtles, kart racing would have to be his forte. The Mario Kart titles that have been released have all been successes, and this one just adds to the mix. Mario comes to the Wii with a great family title that every Wii owner should have. ![]() Presentation Visually, this is the best looking Mario Kart game that has been released. It's vibrant colors and well done animation really makes the game worth looking at. However, the visual prowess of the game comes to a halt once multiplayer is selected. The split screen really brings down the resolution and makes the game plain looking; nothing out of the ordinary but nothing bad either. It leaves a 'meh' kinda feeling. The game boasts 32 different tracks to race in with 16 completely new tracks and another 16 tracks from past Mario Kart games. The classic tracks remain unchanged other then for newly 'refurbished' graphics and visuals that make the tracks actually compare to the new tracks visually. The old races were very well selected. Probably the best races from the old games are added into this one such as N64's Bowser's Castle and DS's Peach Gardens. As well as the new tracks, the game has a larger roster of characters then the previous game, Mario Kart Double Dash. 25 total characters including use of your Mii. Along with this, each character has 6 different karts and 6 different bikes and motorcycles to choose from. Most of these are, of course, unlockable, which gives this game a lot of replay value. ![]() Gameplay Since the Wii is all about motion control, Mario Kart Wii included a Wii Wheel, that you use to turn the remote as if you were driving a car. The wheel isn't needed though. You can simply hold the remote horizontally and it will feel the same. As well as using the Wiimote, the Wii Classic controller and the Nintendo GameCube remote are compatible. If you're more of the old school kart racer, then go for the other controllers. No control is affects overall gameplay other then your comfort. This game is extremely easy to pick up. You accelerate, steer, and throw items. Nothing else to it. But like in every racing game with vehicles, there are two different ways to play; Automatic Mode and Manual Mode. Both of them differ from each other, but they have nothing to do with gear shift. They both have to do with turns. In Automatic, you simply steer harder for sharper turns, which gives a smoother feel to it, whilst Manual mode has a button where you slide on sharp turns and release with a mini turbo to go straight again. Changing from one to the other is a bit difficult, but you will like both once you get the hang of it. Racing against the computer players is a breeze at first, which presents a lack of challenge. Luckily though, you can change the option to put the computer players at a higher difficulty. This, also presents a problem though. The highest level of difficulty is TOO difficult. You can engage the 100cc mode in difficulty and win first every single time, but once you select the 150cc option, you'll always finish close to last. It seems nearly impossible to win every single race in 150cc unless you play the game for hours without end and pick up a few tricks to pass each player. Luckily, when the race gets too tough, there's an online multiplayer feature you can play with yourself or another friend. The online channel features races between friends, local regions, and worldwide play. There are always people playing Mario Kart online looking for a challenge, so it won't be so hard to engage in some friendly competition. As well as online versus, there's some competitions that feature different tasks for you to do as fast as you possibly can. Leaderboards, downloadable ghost times, and your rank in the world also are available in the online channel in the game. ![]() Conclusion This game has some cons that you just have to deal with. Difficulty of unlocking everything and racing the computer players at their peak will fluster you to the edge of your seat and render the game frustrating, but overall, Mario Kart Wii captures an experience that every typical video game player will enjoy. This is a family title worth buying and will keep you playing for a long, long time. Mario has once again shown that he is kart racing king. Final Verdict Control: 16/20 Graphics: 14/20 Replay Value: 18/20 Difficulty: 10/20 Audio: 12/20 Overall Score: 7/10 GOOD GAME Edited by LacenMC, Dec 28 2010, 09:54 AM.

Cool review. I don't really have this game, nor do I really want it. (I am quite content with Sonic Riders and Sega All-Stars Racing) Tho' I have taken to playing this song on my guitar quite a bit. |D
