The thing about SA2's hunting stages...

Before I even start with this: I just wanna get this out of the way: As some of you might know, I actually quite like Knuckles' rap music in SA2. Now, I've been accepting of other people's opinions and joking with them about it in the past, but now it's starting to annoy me. You guys seriously don't need to cause such an uproar about Knuxy's music or rap in general, because guess what people.

It is NOT an abomination to the world.

So quit acting like it is.

And just because YOU don't like it, doesn't mean that there are not people who do.

*ahem* Now that that's all said and done, on to the main point.

Over the time I've been a member of this forum, I've seen people complain about Knuckles' and Rouge's stages in SA2. Now, when I first saw this, I said to myself, "Really? I thought they were awesome. Huh..."

Tho' the more I think about it, the more I really don't like the concept of the hunting stages in general.

While the stages are well-set up and fun to explore, (to me, at least) the whole objective is just "Find three randomly-placed MacGuffins throughout the stage." Seems like a waste of good level design to me. That's and finding the emeralds is either too easy or too tedious, depending on who you are and what stage you're on.

This is why I like Hard Mode more, because the emeralds are in set locations and the question you're asking yourself isn't "Where is the emerald?" it's, "How do I get to the emerald?" It's not too hard to find out where everything is, and the challenge now is completing a small puzzle to actually get to it.

For example, the third Emerald in Wild Canyon is under the giant wind... fan... thing, and you can only get there by using a spring on one of the surrounding pillars. However, you can only get to the spring with your sunglasses activated and you have to latch on to the pillar by manually digging into the ground next to the pillar and grabbing hold while in the air without jumping. (to the people who haven't played Hard Mode, trust me, it's less complicated than it sounds. |P )

I don't know about you guys, but to me, that's fun. I think if they laid out the missions in a similar manner to hard mode, in which you have to worry about how to get to the emerald rather than just find where it is, the stages would be a lot more enjoyable. But that's just me. What do you guys think would have made the stages better?

^See yes, Hard Mode. Hard Mode was actually somewhat...enjoyable! In the regular stages, you're just running/gilding/ect around aimlessly searching for the emeralds. And to me, that's boring. But Hard Mode? Hard Mode's fun. Not a barrel-of-monkeys fun, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Another problem I have, is the lack of challenge. Once you find where the emeralds are, more often then not, they're so easy to get. Just glide over to one, bam! You've got it. Dig a hole in the ground, it's your's. Climb a wall, it's right there. But with little to no challenge. But some enemies in the stage that are actually challenging! Here's an idea; make it so occasionally, you have defeat a small wave of enemies to even get the emerald.

Hard Mode was enjoyable because it got you thinking (well for the first time anyway), the rap music does annoy me because I whilst I will admit I enjoy "some" kinds of rap music I just felt that Knuckles isn't all "Gangsta in da hood, yo!" so he should've just had music like all the other characters got.

I don't walk around spewing bile and hatred, I just tended to mute the sound if I was becoming frustrated with the Knuckles levels and that solved the problem. It's just not my cup of tea. I think the hunting thing was certainly interesting and suited to Knuckles since he's always losing emeralds or whatever so it was well suited and Rouge is always stealing them so... goes without saying they'd both have hunting levels.

Blaire I like the sound of that idea where you have to defeat a wave of enemies before you get the emerald that could do pretty well now since consoles are more powerful and won't freak out with a wave coming on screen.

With the exception of Death Chamber, (having to swim to the door before it closes on you) yes, they're all rather easy to get once you know where they are. Nonetheless, it's still fun to play again after leaving it alone for a while and seeing if you can still remember the tricks to acquiring them. |D

And yes, enemies guarding the emerald would be a cool idea.

They did that, but the robot was right in the middle of a field with no protection! XD

I agree, but at the same time I feel hard mode, because of the static emerald locations, actually took away a bit of the exploration (at least, in some stages).

If I were to completely re-do the emerald hunting levels, I would make them somewhat similar to the "Missions" of Mario 64. At the beginning of the level, you would be given a map that shows you where one emerald shard is. You know the location, so, like hard mode, your job is to figure out how to actually reach it. You would have to explore the area to find interactive-able objects/characters, for instance; throwing a switch would make a platform move, or if you help a character then they'll build you a bridge. As the game progresses, you'd earn different powerups like the sunglasses, so you could return to the area to access a new, unlockable "Mission."

hmm i kinda liked searching the stages for the emeralds instead of just one static location.
and i liked knuckles stage music. especially pumpkin hill.(amazing stage.).
hard mode was challenging which is fun but with them being in the same locations it gets boring...
while the regular they switch each time. so each times diffrent
if you have time to worry then you have time to run and never look back

I disagree with pretty much everything you just said. I don't want to wander around aimlessly searching for the emeralds (it gets even more tedious when you're trying to A rank everything; and those hints can be too unrealiable at times). And sometimes, it's like the programmers at SEGA went 'Ah screw this, well just have the option to have an emerald right here!" And then you find emeralds in the most pathetic of places.

Now, Hard Mode, that offers a nice challenge to even get to the emeralds. It has a small puzzle aspect that I like.

Moreover, the hints can actually ruin your rank, so yeah. |P

Exactly. So if you want an A-Rank, you may have to bypass the hints, and and just wander around, looking for the emeralds. Again, boring.

I need to agree Blaire if you are trying to get A-ranks wandering around wastes time as does looking at hints so I wouldn't like them to be randomly generated or spawned in places.

However perhaps as a bonus challenge maybe once you reach an A Rank they do randomly generated spawn points and no hints but still have the little pulsating emerald locator thing that could be a more fun... perhaps but only AFTER you reach an A-Rank with the original level.

In my opinion...I didn't really like the hunting stages. I was never really good at them, but somehow I managed to beat 'em >.< In my opinion, I didn't like Knuckles' rap music. I mean seriously: They call me Knuckles, unlike Sonic I don't CHUCKLE! :???:

1. That's Knuckles' theme. It doesn't play in any of his stages.

2. That line was from SA1's version of Knuckles theme, not SA2.

3. Best. Line. Ever.

4. Read the text in the OP that is in big red letters. I'm sick of hearing of your problems with Knuckles' music backed up with stupid arguments. Thank you.

Since we're on the subject, I actually loved the SA1 version of Knuckle's theme song. ^_^ It's one of my favs in that game.
