Sandopolis Act 2
Chapter 1: Abduction and Rescue

"We're following that van, Felix," I told the driver of the cab I sat in, as I watched my latest client, a girl just barely out of high school, uncertainly climbed into a white van with windows I couldn't see through. It seemed like a fairly 'normal' kidnapping scenario, nothing paranormal about this... so why had she called me for this? Admittedly, the business on the weird side had not been particularly good, so I was starting to take up 'normal' cases so I could keep up with my expenses, but still. I was hoping for something weird again.
"If you say so." The cabbie interrupted my train of thought as the van in front of us began to pull away from the suburban house.
"Keep it discreet, though. I think these guys are linked to some other disappearances this month," I said, mostly thinking out loud. As we followed the van through the suburbs, I buried my cheek into the remnants of my coat's fleece lining in the collar, trying to make some sense of the circumstances, which had repeated themselves in two earlier suspected kidnappings, friends of the girl, according to the local police.
We ended up outside a warehouse in the waterfront district of town, Felix had parked the cab at a nearby convenience store, under the pretense of refueling the taxi. This was not the first stakeout I had had Felix help me with. I had the cab window rolled down, using a pair of binoculars to more closely watch the passengers of the van get out.
"Ha, see? I told you they'd knock her out enroute," I said, pointing through the window with my thumb at the driver of the van taking the girl in his arms. The driver, far as I could see, was dressed in a layered coat and ski mask, unseasonably heavy for a mid-autumn day out here. His accomplice, however, I'd seen around, a small-time fence I was sure I had busted several times already.
"Okay, okay, I slash my fee. Don't go getting yourself hurt this time, Taylor." Felix shook his head, despite the moronic wager being his idea.
I got out of the cab and handed Felix a fifty. "That'll cover the return trip, right?" I asked, taking my rifle out of the cab's trunk. He nodded, and I jogged off towards the warehouse to stall my perpetrators. Felix would inform the police, and if everything went smoothly, it would be an open-and-shut case.
I hoped.
As I approached the open warehouse doors, the fence and the driver were having a bit of an argument. "Tset, this wasn't the agreement!" The fence shouted as the driver took out a cudgel.
"I apologize, Kamin," the driver said in a deep bassy rumble, "but my employers want no witnesses, and I've one more to deliver to make quota for my bonus." I couldn't tell, but the driver, Tset, seemed to feel like this was routine, while the fence was terrified. I sighed, Travis Kamin was a scumbag of a fence, but this Tset guy seemed to be working for human traffickers. Nobody deserved a life of slavery. I took a breath, brought my rifle up, drew a bead on the larger silhouette, and took the shot. He didn't see it coming until after the bullet had gone through his shoulder, causing him to drop the club and Travis to freak out further. And then the driver, literally bellowing in pain, bull-charged me back through the warehouse door, landing me directly in a sitting position and sending my rifle flying into the building. I swung my legs behind me, getting into a kneeling position, pulled my sidearm out of the concealed holster in my coat's lining, and quickly lined up a shot at the center of mass. To our mutual surprise, a great tongue of flame lashed out at Tset, burning away half his coat and ski mask, treating me to a view of blue skin and a mouth decorated with curly fangs. While I was both mad and relieved that I'd forgotten to switch my sidearm back to conventional rounds from my special incendiary load, I was more shocked that I was dealing with an oni.
Said oni was clutching his face in pain from the sudden burn when Travis blindsided him with his own cudgel and knocked him out.
"Thanks for saving my ass," Travis said as I breathed a sigh of relief.
"Didn't come here for you. Cut the girl loose," I told him as I passed him a penknife I kept in one of the hidden pockets in my coat lining. "And thank you for saving mine. The cops will be here in fifteen, maybe you should just turn yourself in this time, Travis."
He grumbled as he cut my client's bindings. "By the way, Hiss. Tset had a computer in the van, a laptop. This wasn't his first time in town," he told me as I tied up the oni. "He said his employers would be about an hour after he contacted them. Didn't know he was a monster... Aren't you just gonna kill him?"
I shook my head. "Just stay here with the girl until the cops get here." I draped the oni under a tarp and hid him underneath a scaffold, with Travis's help. Then he sat down next to the girl and draped his jacket over her as she slept. Sure, he was scum, but I'm told I have a way of bringing out people's better sides. I don't know for sure. As I heard the sirens in the distance, I decided to leave and grabbed the oni's laptop. Yeah, a demon with a computer. Weird, but not my weirdest.
I met up with Felix back at the gas station. "Whoever's doing this," I said, "is going to learn to stay out of my neck of the woods." On that note, the cabbie took me back to my apartment in silence. This case, while technically solved, had taken a turn for the strange. It was high time for some independent investigation.
Indeed, there is nothing more repulsive than these monsters that defy nature and are known by the name of witcher, as they are the offspring of foul sorcery and witchcraft. They are unscrupulous scoundrels without conscience and virtue, veritable creatures from hell capable only of taking lives. They have no place amongst decent and honest folk.

. . .

Hey! This is looking fantastic so far.

You've mixed light-heartedness with drama quite nicely and I cannot wait to see what happens next. Well done.
