    if there's one thing in this world I hate: It's Recolours Of Sonic Characters/Sprites....I mean sum ppl want one then get lazy and take SEGA's sprites and characters(ilegal) and just recolor and call it "original" there is nutin original about it!! Stupid ppl....  and sum ppl say they r sonic/knuckles/tails/etc.'s. Long lost freekin brothr/sistr/cuzin or watevr it pisses me off

*looks up* Oh, a recolor rant? Geez... Personally I think re-colors get a lot of un-warranted hate. Okay first, reclos aren't all bad. For a begginings spriter, recoloing may be a great place to start. You dont expect People to just start and begin belting out 5-shade customs, in the same way you dont expect an ameatur artist to paint a van goh. Recolors are a perfect way to familiarize yourself with the essentials of MS Paint. Second, yes its illegal. But spriting by definition is illegal. That guy in your avatar? Hes based of a sonic sprite, which makes him stolen property. The reason SEGA dosent sue our arse is that sprites are good because they express that we loge sonic so much, we want to be a part of it. All sonic sprites, even recolors, are good publicity. Third, looks arent everythig. A recolor can be a pretty original character if the back story is done right. It dosent matter if it looks the same. Shadow is basically a black sonic, but wih a completely different backstory and attitude. You've obviously seen a few recolors in your time, and i understand why they might piss you off. But here's my advice. Dont flame the little guys, try to help them improve. They dont know any better. When I started spriting I wasn't even a recolor, hell I was a manic invert. But the thing is thay if I had been flamed back then like I see people flaming re-colors now, well I may not be spritig a fully custom sheet right now. |

Personally, some recolors are good... say A red Sonic with some symbols on his forehead or something, eh, But some Recolors are just plain stupid ( In my opinon ) But some people are starters and are getting use to it, but yeah some are just lazy.. |

Let's say you have a fan character. It's got a cool but balanced personality, fills a niche within the setting and could contribute to the universe in a positive way. But you can't draw even if your life depended on it. Why not recolour then? It's not art theft to me, because people will notice the art does not belong to you and you never try to trick people it's yours. Everyone within this fandom knows Sonic X from Fanart. See, making a fan character isn't about being a good artist. If you just want to show your character's general design a recolour might be the way to go, unless you manage to get a request approved by a better artist, in which case you should always give credit to that artist. But not everyone have those contacts. The core essence of recolouring is OK. The elements that come with them? All part of a learning process. |

I don't really mind recolors that much. In fact, my character, Alex the fox, was made from a base for Shadow. I just added a tail and different spikes. Now, I can hardly recognize the first Alex to the new Alex. the only thing that stayed the same was the brimstone red fur.

If you mean people who take a Sonic sprite, turn it green and name it 'Jade the Hedgehog' or something along those lines then I do find them uncreative, I don't hate them as such but I don't really like them either. Oh and its kinda hypocritical of you to trash talk recolours when your own character is a recolour. |

Recolours aren't so bad, really. Heck, Chaos started off as a recolour once. But as time went by, he changed into something slightly more original. I mean, he's still a hedgehog, but whatever. xD Case in point:  The green Shadow featured in this comic? That was Chaos when I started out way back when. I had little skill, so that was the best that I could come up with. But hey, it was better than nothing. Another character of mine was Ruin, who was just Chaos inverted. Like litterally inverted. It looked awful. xD Still, over the years they slowly became more original, into what we see them as today.   Not exactly the most imaginative characters, but still, they're no longer recolours. Over time people will want their characters to have their own personal flair that sets them apart from the crowd, and you slowly see the recolours disappear. 'Course, more will show up with the newer kids in the fandom, but that can't really be helped. They'll improve eventually.  All in all, recolours are a good first step towards bringing that character to life, but if you can help it you should change them somwhere down the track. Don't be hatin' on them though. |

People consider Shadow the Hedgehog to be a re-color of Sonic with red strips and different shape in his quills. Yet, he is one of the favorites in the franchise. Re-colors aren't all that bad. They're the first step to creating a good fan character.

No, recolors aren't bad. Generally recolors are made by people who aren't the best at spriting. If they were better, they would probably make them look better. My first fan characters way back when were recolors. And making a good fancharacter is more than making a cool looking sprite. I would rather have a recolor with a cool abilites, personality and background, than a cool looking boring character. |

Hey, i have a recolor of amy to use as my character but I enevr had any intention of doing it. I only thought of it like halfa year later to show someone what my character looked like. It kind of is original because it is a way for un artistic peopple (like myself) to show what their chars look like Get what I mean by that? But the whole "Oh Im related to knux, shadow etc." is kinda stupid..and makes me pissed. |

Hey, not all recolors are bad, and also... you're not one to talk. Why not take a look at your character as your avatar, that's not much of an "edit" all you did was add some clothes and make his bottom spine point a wee bit more downwards, oh and added bangs. that just SCREAMS original. Take it from me, I've seen boatloads of recolors, I was an admin of a VERY popular fan character site known as novally's sanctuary (the site is no longer active, and I haven't talked the creator in a long time). heck I saw a grey colored sonic and he called him self scythe the reaperhog, months later I come back to the site, his character is completely customly sprited, has clothes, awesome attacks and what not. Those recolors you see now could very well surpass you in the months to come. |

(I need to get out the rp section more. ) Well, I've only had ONE 'recolor' character, who isn't all that developed as I only use him on those vacation/lover islands rps that were going around. He was a brown version of sonic, at first. But then I fixed him up, gave him cloths, gave him jet black hair(which I've noticed not a lot of people put 'hair' on their hedgehog character, and only go with spines or spikes.) Now! I can't draw for my life, so I use already drawn sonic characters, fan art of sonic characters as well, to draw out my characters. Its called using a base, as I'm not copying said picture completely and changing the color of it, I'm just using the picture's posing base, then I draw the gloves, shirts, pants, spines, hair, and so on myself. But like everyone else said, re-colors can be the start out of someone trying to learn how to draw sprites. I'm slowly learning how to draw each time I use a base and/or a picture to draw my character's from.

*Looks at Avatar* OK, I think I sense a hypocrite. OK, Recolours, My Opinion on them, the type I hate are; -Go to Deviantart, Team Artail or any Sonic Image Site. -Copypast'a it onto a Paint Programme. -Fill the Image with Different Colours. -Name it, Give it a Backstory and say it's Original! But if you change some stuff and try to make it more Original then I could see how it would work. |
