Have you ever had the problem to where you see a roleplay you like, but you can't roleplay in it due to it conflicting your character(')s(') backstory? Well what if your character had more than one backstory? A different one in each dimension?

In one dimension your character could die a terrible death.
In another, he/she could've had some change in biology, such as Animal to Human, or something less stereotypical.
In another dimension, he/she could've been a miscarriage, but reborn as a science experiment.
The list goes on.

In my opinion, this would fix this problem if it occurred.

I wasn't sure where to put this, move if in the wrong place. :)

When I do this, I usually give them differing appearances, different clothing ect.

but yes, I have employed this theory a lot, though usually only to differ the character from canon to canon, i.e. I have a Zak for the Sega Sonic universe, but another for the Archie Universe, this one naked and employing mechanical aid in fighting, and another for Sonic X canon, this one just without pants and a different jacket.

I also have an alternate Zak for sprite comics, and another alternate for roleplays that specificaly take place in alternate universes. And of course there is always the Anti-Zak.

And a female one for teh lulz.

It can be an interesting concept if applied correctly, though I don't like the times when it's over used, and the OP simply uses them as an excuse to engineer the character to pwn in the roleplay (i.e. making him a pirate in a sea-travel based roleplay, or an amazing sniper in an assassination roleplay)

I myself tend to do this to a certain degree; for me it's more like I slightly ALTER their backstory, while using the same basic story the whole time.

Like, my character Mister Black for example.
His backstory is that he is an android of the Overlord's Inquisition, sent to mercilessly hunt down and kill/torture any people who have done something to displease the Overlord of Mankind, the tyrant who rules over a post-apocalyptic Earth.

Obviously this backstory would conflict with certain RP's.

So, I alter his story slightly, to be something like, for example, that he's still an android of the Inquisition, only this Overlord is some mysterious man with a lot of resources operating behind the scenes and plotting to take over the world.
Basically the same story, but minus the post-apocalyptic world and more secrecy.

I object to your claims
I kinda do the same thing Dev does; I use some of the basic parts for my character's backstories in RPs, but with some alteration.

For instance, Blaire is based in the SatAM universe, where Robotnik is in control, and she is part of a freedom fighter group of my own creation, the Oakland Resistance Division. However, most of the RPs I'm in don't follow that particular universe. So I keep her as an O.R.D agent, but I also remove some of the other SatAM-esque elements from her backstory to make her fit in an RP.

I don't have premade versions of my different characters. When I have to transfer them to a different universe, I take along their key themes and characteristics. After all, what makes a character her own person? Those things can often be applied to any universe; it's the superfluous and specific detail that often needs to be changed. Even something as specific as being a prince in one universe can be altered rather seamlessly.

A prince can instead be an heir to a large corporation (If transferring from medieval worlds to more modern).
A knight can be a soldier.
A witch can turn into a wisened physician or caregiver or golddigger or a seductive corporate powerhouse (depending on her previous disposition).

But the personality and past, beyond some tweaking for the latter, can stay the same. If you can't make a character fit in another world, then your character isn't meant to be a player-character in the first place, and you may want to cut them down or use another.

Yay.

I've used a considerably different take on multiverse theory for my usual character, that he is literally able to "jump" between different continuities. Admittedly, I don't bring it up much since it's hard to work with if/when I do, but I've made that a fair bit integrated into the character as well.
Indeed, there is nothing more repulsive than these monsters that defy nature and are known by the name of witcher, as they are the offspring of foul sorcery and witchcraft. They are unscrupulous scoundrels without conscience and virtue, veritable creatures from hell capable only of taking lives. They have no place amongst decent and honest folk.

I tend to just use very skeletal backgrounds for my characters. They fit in anywhere, like a Commedia del Arte troupe. With different time eras, I've got one group of medieval characters, one group of modern characters and one group who can be put in any sort of post-modern/futuristic setting.

Not to mention my meta-characters. But that just gets confusing. XD

But yes, it's a good idea for roleplayers to be flexible with their characters.

To be honest, I actually haven't thought of this. Now that you say it the idea seems so obvious.

creating a new, sometimes that the best, it gives me a wider field of choices.
