For The Circle
|
It was all a very simple process. The tiny creatures, who were small and defenseless, would be lured into searching for their stolen idol. I would appear in their small village gathering, claiming to know where their precious one would be found. A stupidly brave hero would rise to the occasion, as one always did. If I was lucky, more than one would go in search. I would direct them to a land far away, telling them of the vile race that captured their treasured celebrity. Of course, I would unleash some unruly beings along the way to hinder them. If they made it, then the heroes would slaughter the other village, and I would slaughter their village in their absence. If they died along the way...I would slaughter their village in their absence! Such simple minded beings could only look at the world in terms of "Good" and "Evil". But there is no good nor evil in this world. There is only Death. Nio arose to the sound of a crowd gathering. One would think this would be odd, but this was daily routine for Nio, or any Orminian for that matter. He looked around at his humble home. Carved from a huge stone, the door was just a wooden plank, the windows literal holes in the walls. Strangely there was a glowing green panel in the wall, to which a few wires were connected, almost like an electrical outlet. The wires led to a lamp that was duct-taped to the ceiling, an old analog TV, and a very old NES system with two game pads attached. Both had scotch tape on the backs and names written with Sharpie marker: one read "Nio", the other "Rian". The outlet and all attached to it stuck out like a sore thumb in what would appear a pre-historic home, as the furniture were all made of raw wood. Nio pushed himself, still tired, out of bed and slumped over to the green panel. He touched it, and the glowing light produced a holographic circle about half a foot in front of Nio. Nio made a few quick hand gestures on the rather bare circular interface, and the lamp on the ceiling turned on. In addition to this, an image of the current time appeared on the wall with no visible source of projection, and the left wall of the house gained a luster like a mirror. Nio looked at the image reflected back at him. He was a being known as a Orminian. A small blue creature with a round body; most of which was occupied by his face. His mouth has relatively small compared to his face, and his eyes were huge and glowing with a bright white light. He had blue hands and feet, but no arms or legs connecting them to his body. His hands and body simply floated above the area one would imagine them to be. He made a few more quick hand gestures on the input panel and clothes fall from the ceiling. He didn't even have to move for the green cloak to envelope his body and the large hat to fall on his head, shrouding his face in darkness, only his large glowing eyes visible. Nio reached over to the circular panel again, but this time instead of inputting a command, he passed his hand strait trough it to touch the green panel. The circular interface dissipated and the house reverted to it's former state. Nio walked out his door to join the bustling crowd that was the town market. Merchants who traveled to junklands and brought back treasures to sell, or "Trashers" as they were more commonly referred to, roamed about the town square, flaunting both valuable items, and useless garbage. Their foreign goods kept this town alive. Besides the Trashers, various Farmers sold their goods, and a few Alchemists sold potions and elixirs. Nio could see a few interesting items for sale to say the least, but he wasn't really looking for something to buy. No , he was looking for someone, a specific person. He spotted her from across the square. He proceeded to calmly walk across the market over to the girl in the red robes. She was calmly talking with a Trasher, and Nio could recognize him as the one who had sold him both his NES and his TV. "Rian!" Nio said in a loud voice when he was considerably close. Rian turned to see Nio and smiled. Or at least that's what Nio think she did, he mouth was obscured by the darkness that covered all Orminians. "Nio! Hi!" She said happily. "This fellow found something you may like!" Nio looked upon what the Trasher had to sell, and matched Rian's smile when he saw what it was. In the Trasher's hands was a battered NES cartridge. The label was ripped off, but "074" was etched in the front a lead pencil. "74! Where did you find this?" Nio asked the Trasher. "Oh-ho my boy, that I can't tell you. A Trasher's supply is his very life! But I can tell you are fond of cartridges. Was this one you've been looking for?" "Yes! Yes it is!"Nio said with glee. All NES cartridges had no label, they were all labeled with a number, so that the buyer would not judge the game by its label and to add a bit of surprise into buying games. But Nio knew exactly what game number "074" was. It was his favorite game ever; "The Legend of Zelda". He had bought the game along with his NES system on his birthday two years ago, and had fallen in love with the game. He had played it for hours, memorized every secret cave, every hidden door, every last rupee there was to collect. Unfortunately he was forced to sell the game a long time ago in times of financial hardship, but now it was finally his again!"How much do you want for it? Any price, any price at all I'll pay it!" "Why, its not for sale anymore." Said the Trasher. "This young lady just purchased it." he said pointing to Rian. Rian looked at Nio joyfully and handed him the cartridge. "A gift." She said. "I know how much you loved this game, and I just wanted to thank you for always being there for me." Trying to read an Orminian's facial expressions was just about as possible as locating their knees, but Something in Rian's eyes told Nio she was being completely sincere. "I...I don't know what to say." Nio said. "Say I can come over and play the game with you!" Rian replied. Without a response she turned to thank the Trasher, and pulled Nio back to his house. When they arrived, Nio opened the interface in his wall again, and sent power to his lamp, NES and TV. While Rian made herself comfortable in front of the TV, he pushed the cartridge into the system and pushed the power button. After a black screen and the words "Nintendo" passed by the screen, a light, twinkling melody began to play. "Wait..." Rian said. "I don't remember-" She was cut of by the image of a giant sword plunged into a cliff over looking a seascape. At the top of the screen, the words "Zelda II: The Adventure of Link" flashed. "Oh no!" Rian said in despair. "This is the wrong game! You wanted 073! Oh gods Nio, you must hate me for this." "No, it's perfectly fine!" Nio said, not sharing Rian's look of despair. "It's the thought that counts, and if this is anything like the prequel, I like this game just as much." He said smiling. She began to lose the look of sadness on her face. "You shouldn't be sorry for being a good friend Rian." Nio replied. Rian finality cheered up and re-gained that joy in her eyes that Nio had come to know and love. "Well then why are you still talking? Play the game!" Rian said eagerly. Nio pushed start, and truly began his quest. |
