Don't close your eyes, don't give into the fright
|
CHAPTER #1 I sprinted down the dark alley, it twisted and turned and never seemed to end. I felt like I was being eaten by the buildings around me, as if any minute they would fall on me. I couldn’t see, blood ran warm and slick down my forehead into my eyes, my head throbbed with each particle of dust or wind that hit the huge gash I knew must be there, like a wide gaping mouth. The alley smelt of damp decay, of dead corpses, and of rain. I slipped on something, most probably something as simple as a trash bag and because of how slippery the rain made it, it seemed like a menacing death trap laid down there to eat me. I slipped and fell. Scraping my hands and seemingly almost broken knee’s. Pain shot up my spine, and arms and legs, causing me to cry out. I heard voices coming after me. I knew they realized I had, had the strength to run away before they killed me. I crawled to my feet and ran as best I could to the road, away from the dark alley and the creatures pursuing. I tripped again on an uneven surface, my balance wasn’t so good when I was losing blood like I was now, and bashed my head into a brick that was sticking out of the wall. I didn’t pass out so much as my brain simply exploded. Time stopped for me and the world went dark. The last thing I heard was the fading sound of screeching tires and overlapping voices. I fought desperately against the darkness, I didn’t want to die yet, but I lost anyways. -I’m dead- I thought, the dark abyss tugging at my mind finally claimed me and the world went dark. Time was slow in the state I was in. The blackness didn’t go away. I felt like I was going to be there forever, trapped in time, never waking up. Was I dead? I couldn’t be sure. All I was sure of is that time elapsed and re-elapsed so many times that I couldn’t even begin to count or figure out how long I had been in this abyss. Just as I thought I would be in it forever a sound rang through the darkness, calling me back to my senses. It took me a while to realize I actually had them back, I had been in that black void so long. The very black void that God comes through to claim your spirit as His own. But I wasn’t dead yet apparently, because He had not claimed me. My hearing and smelling slowly came back, as did the feeling for the rest of my body. I slowly started to move a finger, then two, then my whole hand. Slowly, slowly I reached up my side to place my hand on my stomach. Once I did that, pain burst through me like a minefield waiting to explode. I yelped and started coughing up blood, I turned and hacked it onto the ground. After a while I stopped, leaving a crimson red pool. A door opened and shut, causing me to realize that I was inside and something had just joined me. I cringed against a light that the unknown creature had turned on. I knew then that I wasn’t completely alone. I caught my breath and stilled. I looked around the building I was in, which appeared to be a small, simple log cabin. The light came from a lit fire on a stone hearth, the flames danced merrily to blend into the simple atmosphere. I watched the flames and the creature intently, the boy who crouched there didn’t seem to know I had woken, he probably thought that I had thrown up while I was out. I stayed there, half-expecting him to come over and kill me for some reason. I didn’t know who he was or what he wanted, all I knew is that the reason I had been running before the abyss was a real threat, I knew nothing else. I didn‘t know where I was, what time it was, what day it was, or even if it was daytime or night time. After a while I tried to move my hand again and cried out, I was still propped up awkwardly on my side from before, I painfully turned again to lay on my back and held another coughing fit down, one that I knew would spout up more blood. What had happened? I searched back through my memory to what had been there before, before the alley had threatened to eat me, before the rain made it slippery as an ice death trap, before the tires and overlapping voices, before the black void. I then remembered what had happened. My memory flooded back and I couldn’t help a few whimpers of fear from bubbling up to my lips. I had been running a sabotage mission for a gang I had been in. The people in it ranged from ten years old to twenty, after a few years of leeway from that age it was recommended you quit. I had been successful in my mission, I had blown up all of the supplies, weapons and part of their building along with it. They had caught me. I had been held down and hit with different things from multiple people, the worse was a crowbar,. I looked at my injuries, slowly moving my head around, slowly moving my fingers up my sides and legs and arms, my neck and jaw and head. Pain shot up me again and I yelped a small pain-filled cry. I had seemingly broken knees that weren‘t broken or almost broken but very badly bruised and bloody. Some broken ribs, three of them, two on my left side one on my right, I was surprised that I hadn’t punctured my lung or my heart they felt so misshapen. A huge pain in my head reminded me of the jagged gash there, like a gaping mouth screaming, and I had cuts and bruises all over. To my surprise as I felt my injuries I realized I was bandaged up. I sat up very slowly trying to look around and felt hands grab my shoulders and start to push me back down. I immediately went into survival mode and struggled. I bit into a hand and heard someone yell out. I was pushed flat and held there until I stopped moving and calmed down. I opened my eyes and saw a tall, dark haired boy standing over me. He looked about nineteen. I started to struggle again because I was scared of what he was going to do, but couldn’t move an inch as he pressed down firmly on my shoulders and kept me there. “Calm down, your hurt, and stressing out only makes it worse.” The voice was calm and coaxing. It had an edge of command to it and a sense of authority. I looked up at him again by slowly turning my head back. He looked sure of himself and very much in control. I sighed a little and did what he said. The grip loosened bit by bit and eventually he let go when he was sure I wouldn‘t try to move again. “You’ll figure out where you are later. Right now you must eat. You must be hungry.” He said. At the mention of food my stomach growled and rolled and caused me to turn and hack up more blood. He held a pail for me and then went and rinsed it and placed it by me again. “How long was I out?” I asked tentatively. “Six days, and you almost died , that gash in your head took a toll.” He said. My eyes widened. -Six days!? I almost died??- I thought. He came and stood over me again. Standing beside me and bending down a bit to look me in the eyes. “Open your mouth .” He said, his voice calm and reassuring, that same commanding tone was in there as well. I looked at him for a second. One of his eyebrows went up and I immediately opened my mouth. That was how I ate for the next few weeks. He actually kept me down and fed me. One thing that I noticed was that he never seemed to sleep, eat, or have to use the restroom. He was always there, he didn’t talk much though. He made me sleep often, and when I couldn’t he’d give me something that would knock me out. Eventually he let me sit up, and then stand. He never really asked questions, I didn’t either, I was too afraid too. “Now…who are you?” He asked once I was up and walking. My knees were wrapped and my head was healed and scabbed up. My throat tightened and my hands went numb. “Who are you?” He asked again, harsher than usual. “My name is Amelia Springer.” I answered quietly. “How old are you?” he asked. “Fourteen…who are you?” I answered and then asked. He smirked, something I hadn’t seen him do. “I’m Deathrace, and I’m nineteen.” He answered. I gasped a bit. It was a weird name, one I had heard before but couldn’t remember where. He sighed and looked at me. “I’ve heard you’re a big troublemaker.” he said. I cringed. “That’s why you were running. Those people caught you.” He said. He said it like he had known it. I nodded. “Your lucky…that car that pulled up WAS them…I pulled you out and got them to back off.” he said. I sighed. “Sorry…I just-” I started, but he interrupted. “Why are you sorry? You were on a mission, you got caught.” He said, the knowing and reassuring voice coming back. “Where am I?” I asked. “Your far away from the city.” He answered. “How did you know all that?” I asked. “That’s something your going to have to figure out yourself, Amelia, I‘m still trying to decide if I approve of saving you or not don‘t make me regret it.” he answered. I frowned a bit. He got up and pushed me, literally pushed me out the door. “Walk around, strengthen your legs. If you see anyone, run!” He said. Then he walked back inside leaving me confused, scared, and somewhat freaked. CHAPTER #2 I decided I didn’t want to walk, but when I noticed him looking out the window at me, I sighed and walked along the river. I wondered why he cared so much and why he saved me. I was a troublemaking street rat and I didn’t think that he had ever seen me before. Or at least I knew I hadn’t ever seen him before. After a bit I grew tired and sat down to rest. My knee’s ached form not using them in so long and from the injuries they sustained. I heard a rustle across the river and my head snapped up. I looked forward and listened intently. Suddenly I saw something jump from behind a bush, a branch on the tree behind me cracked like something had landed on it. I looked up and saw a boy. He had blonde hair and red eyes. The blonde hair jutted out to the sides instead of lay flat. He wore no shirt and ripped up jeans with a black leather belt. He was also barefooted. His red eyes had a glow to them. “Well…what’s this? A girl lost her way?” He asked. I shivered a bit and remembered what Deathrace had said. I turned to run but before I knew it I was snatched up and thrown into a tree trunk. At least it felt like one anyways. I cried out and fell forward onto my stomach, I sat up on all fours cringing. Something crouched over me and growled. I looked up and saw Deathrace. His eyes were neon red, whites and all. His sharp chin and features seemed illuminated. I was pretty much hidden in his trench coat as it fell down around me. His jeans were ripped and the chain he used for a belt glinted in the shafts of sunlight. Some of the spikes on his combat boots also glinted in shafts of light coming down from the dense canopy of the forest. I noticed he looked angry, not only angry, he looked down-right pissed. The blonde haired boy backed up and also growled. -why are they growling?- I wondered. -HOW are they growling?- “Leave her alone! She belongs to me!” Deathrace growled. T hat comment ticked me off a bit. I didn’t belong to anyone. “She still reeks of freewill, you haven’t marked her as your own yet! Besides, I’m hungry.” The boy snarled. “Ray don’t you DARE!” Deathrace yelled. Throughout all of this I was still on my hands and knee’s almost hidden my Deathrace’s trench-coat. His long black hair swung down to hang in front of his face a little bit over his eyes and I noticed he was baring his teeth. I shivered a bit, he looked scary, I was glad that the anger wasn’t directed towards me. Everything happened at once. Ray dived at me and grabbed me around the neck. At the same time Deathrace pivoted on his feet and twirled, blocking Ray and knocking him off from me and shielding me with his legs and then his back, the movement caused me to turn with him and I was slightly crouched but curled into a ball. A bloody knife flashed in Deathrace’s hand, I wasn’t hurt, I looked at Ray and saw that he had a huge gash in his chest. Everything stayed still for a second, the only sound was the blood dripping off from the knife and onto a few blades of grass. Ray took a step back and suddenly ran. Deathrace snarled and stood up. He looked at me and picked me up to my feet with one hand and pushed me so that I stumbled towards the location of the cabin. “Go back to the cabin.” He said gently as if he were talking to a kid. He then spun and raced off after Ray. Within seconds I was all alone, no sign of anyone or anything, like it had never happened. The only indication of anything happening was the drops of blood on the grass. I ran as best I could back to the cabin then, when I got there I sat on the bed, my mind racing to fast for me to catch up. “What just happened!?” I wondered. I sighed and waited until I caught up with my racing mind, I never did though, and after several minutes I lay down and fell asleep. When I woke up a few hours later I saw a plate on the desk along with a glass of water. I tensed a bit and looked around to the foot of my bed and saw Deathrace reading. As soon as I looked at him he glanced at me and then just looked back at his book, he pointed to the plate. “Eat…” One word, not good. I took it up and ate a few bites, when I set it back down I looked at him and I sat up and rubbed my eyes. He slammed down the book hard enough to cause the table to shake. “Why didn’t you run?” He yelled loudly. “I-I tried I just-” “If you had run then that wouldn’t have ever happened.” He said. “I tried to!!” I said, my voice about an octave higher but not louder. His, on the other hand, got louder. “Do you know how much danger your in now?! The Plague knows about you! He will kill you! He will make you his slave, torture you and kill you!” He yelled at me. I whimpered a bit and curled up into a ball, what had I gotten myself into? If I had just said no to Sarah about the mission this wouldn’t have happened. He sighed a bit and calmed down enough to stop yelling. “Go to sleep…” he said curtly. I didn’t want to, I wanted to ask questions and finally get some answers. He seemed to sense this because he grabbed onto the back of my neck and put a towel over my nose and mouth, I tried to hold my breath but eventually gave in and breathed in the thing I knew would make me sleep. Just as I knew, the world grew black and I fell asleep. Deathrace’s P.O.V. -That girl, she’s so stupid she has no common sense in her head. I don’t know why she can’t see that things are dangerous here, more dangerous that she’s used too…- Deathrace thought. He sighed a bit and placed a hand on her forehead in her sleep. “She doesn’t know that she’s light.” He said softly, reminding himself why he had to be so patient with her. He walked out the door towards the river flowing by the cabin. It was very late at night. He looked up and saw a few stars through the dense foliage of the forest. “This is a different world now. One only known by human slaves. But she’s not a slave. And I’m not going to mark her. If I do that she’ll never get back to her world.” Why did he bring her there?? He didn’t know. “She was in danger…” He said it as if it answered everything, and it kind of did. He hated how she had no idea who he was, how she knew nothing of her purpose. How she knew nothing at all but the streets of New York and petty little missions. Petty compared to the life she must now live. “If only she knew…” He said and trailed off. He didn’t have to specify to himself what he wished she knew. He wished she knew everything. But it was impossible. He continued walking along the river, his nerves calmed by the soft flowing sound of the water and the occasional splash of a frog or fish jumping into or out of the water. There was a growl. Immediately he began to growl too, and looked around. Ray stepped from the shadows. “You know the law here. You had no right to give me a scar.” He said. “You had no right to act the fool you’ve always been.” Deathrace replied. Ray chuckled. “Your right brother, but this time I’m not the fool. You are. By bringing her here prematurely you upset the balance of this place, of this world!” Ray snarled slightly. “Upset the balance? WHAT BALANCE!? There hasn’t been ever since the Plague took charge of the slave trade and made it legal! There hasn’t been any balance except the illusion of one that isn’t there!” Deathrace growled out. “ It’s a kind of balance that we have to accept, brother. Or else we won’t survive here.” Ray replied calmly, sadly. “YOUR not going to survive if you try to touch her again!” Deathrace snapped. Ray smirked. “Wanna bet?” With those two words he leapt at Deathrace. -Shit not now!- Deathrace thought, Amelia would be waking up soon. He grabbed Ray’s neck and slammed him into the ground and held him there. “For the last time LISTEN TO ME, for your own soul’s sake!” Deathrace said desperately. Ray leapt up and grabbed Deathrace’s neck, slammed him into a tree and whispered into his ear. “No, you listen to me. You’ve got exactly one week before I actually tell the Plague his suspicions that an unmarked human, THE unmarked human, being here are true. They will kill you, and her. Or at least enslave you both. That would be too bad, you being the rightful heir of the throne next. Your dad making you step down and go to slaughter. Wouldn’t it?” Ray said, hissing out the words like he were a snake and the news were the venom. Deathrace couldn’t help flinching. He growled low and deep in his chest. “Like I said….touch her….you die.” He kicked Ray off and walked away. Ray shrugged and replied, “Suit yourself…you’ve got one week, don’t waste it!” and he ran off silently. Deathrace went back to the cabin, more worries on his mind than there ever had been. CHAPTER #3 Amelia’s P.O.V. When I woke up I cussed and sighed. I hated when he made me sleep when I didn’t want too. “I hate it when he does that…sometimes he’s stupid..” I muttered, sounding like a five year old. I heard a forced chuckle. “Sometimes you don’t listen.” Deathrace said. I froze and let out a squeak. “Yeah…no sleep…remember?!” He snapped. I cringed. “Yeah I remember now…” I said, feeling the usual scared feeling when I was around him. “Good…now get up and walk around outside again, your legs will start cramping up real bad now that they’re healed if you don’t move. Get. And this time if someone comes, RUN.” he snarled. I sighed and got up and went out. I walked along the river and then crossed it. I looked around. “Geez…this place is just one giant forest.” I muttered to myself. “You got that right, girly.” Someone said. -Oh geez….not again!!!- I thought. Just like last time I turned to run, but this time when I did I ran straight into Ray. I gave up and just sat there and curled up. Ray looked at me and smirked. “I’m faster than you, stronger than you, and will kill you. Don’t try to run.” He said. I didn’t move, and pretended like I didn’t hear him. He grabbed my jaw and forced me to look at him, squeezing my bone and causing me to yelp. “Listen to me you little brat! Just because you got lucky and have Deathrace looking after you doesn’t mean other’s wont kill you!” he growled. He began crushing my jaw harder. I struggled but couldn’t. Just like before he threw me against what felt like a tree. I got up to my feet and looked at who I knew it was. “Hi Deathrace…” I muttered. I just sighed and put my forehead against his chest and stood there. “I’ll talk to you later…” he said. I nodded and just sat down behind him. Things were a lot more slow than last time. Ray wasn’t as scary, Deathrace wasn’t as on edge. Apparantly they had talked or something since last time. “Remember what I told you?” Deathrace said calmly. “Remember what I told YOU?” Ray asked, just as calmly. Deathrace nodded. “I do.” He said, then lunged at Ray. Ray jumped out of the way and grabbed me. I struggled to get him off and Deathrace pulled him off me. By the time they both stopped they were both breathing and bleeding heavily. Ray just turned and left. Deathrace closed his eyes and his skin started healing up. He glared at me. “Go back to bed…” he said. I got up and went back to the cabin and climbed into bed and sighed. “Is this going to happen every time I leave the cabin now???” I asked myself. My jaw still ached from Ray trying to crush it. I rubbed it and sighed again, closing my eyes. The fight hadn’t been much more than I was used too by now. Deathrace had stabbed Ray, Ray had punched him etc. etc. etc. I soon fell asleep. I woke up to the sound of the fire, and of my stomach growling. I sat up and was going to go get something to eat when I noticed a plate beside the bed like usual. “Eat.” Deathrace said. I cringed, this was an exact replica of what happened last time. He was reading a book, and would start yelling as soon as I stopped eating. I ate slowly and hesitated to put it down, this time I got up and put it in the sink and then went back and sat in the bed against the wall in the corner of the room. The bed was against the corner of the room, so I curled up there and sighed. “So…why didn’t you follow directions?” Deathrace asked calmly, like he was trying to keep himself under control. “I-I did….b-but I ran into him.” I said. “Why did you give up and sit down?” He asked. My stomach started hurting. “You were watch-” “Answer my question” he snapped, interrupting me. I waited a second, he stopped looking at the book and glared at me. “Well?” He asked harshly. The original tone of control and authority came into his voice, his voice was like the night I came here. “Um…w-well….Ray-” He put the book down, came around to the side of the bed and cuffed me slightly, not too hard, just hard enough to hurt. He got in my face, “When I tell you to do something. DO IT. No matter how impossible it seems. Don’t give up! Don’t sit down and wait for me! Keep fighting and trying to run and get away! I think I know what I’m talking about here Amelia! I’ve lived like this my whole life! Don’t give up! Your way more important than anyone here and you don’t even know it! No one’s going to hurt you too bad, except Plague, not even Ray. He’s just a stubborn kid. Listen. I’m basically your brother and father now. You are never going to see your world again if your not careful.” He said. His eyes widened and he cussed under his breath. My eyes widened and I screamed out all the questions I had, had building up inside of me over the time I had been here recovering, “WHAT!? THIS IS A DIFFERENT WORLD!? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT? WHERE IS THIS? WHAT ARE YOU? WHAT’S GOING ON!? WHA-” Deathrace clapped a hand over my mouth and shushed me gently. “Shhh…it’s going to be ok. It’s going to be alright. Calm down. Eventually everything will be explained to you. Shh. It’s alright.” I yelled through his hand, “WHAT DO YOU MEAN ALRIGHT!? WHERE THE FISH AM I!?” I asked. He smirked. “Fish….? Really?” I blushed a bit, embarrassed. “First of all, I can’t tell you that much yet. You’ll know why later. Second, yes, this is a different world. Not space or anything. It’s a different type of dimension, I guess you could say. Have you ever seen Harry Potter?” He asked. I nodded. “Well they live in the same world…but not quite right?” He asked. I nodded again. “Well this is kind of like that. Only we don’t cast spells and have talking picture framed and giant spiders that talk.” He said, trying to be funny and calm me down. It worked a bit. “B-but…what-” “Shh…don’t ask anymore questions alright? I know it’s hard. You wake up in a new world. Have no idea what kind of creatures we are. Have no idea why you’re here. I understand. The same thing happened to me. But I was a newborn.” He said, chuckling a bit. I nodded and sighed. “Yes sir…” I said. He nodded, “Good girl.” CHAPTER #4 When I woke up in the morning it was the usual. He was reading a different book and some breakfast was waiting for me. “Do you watch me all night?” I asked. “Yes.” He said. I was confused. “Why?? Doesn’t it get boring?” I asked. “No…actually it’s very interesting to see someone sleep. And anyways I have to make sure Ray doesn’t come in while I’m not paying attention.” he said. I shivered a bit. “Oh...yeah…thanks.” I said, I was scared thinking about what might happen if Ray came in while I was sleeping. Edited by Wolfgurl989, Nov 12 2010, 08:35 PM.
