So has anyone played the demo yet? I actually like it, but I've always been a huge fan of the Hot Pursuit games. Finally a GOOD NFS, the last good one imo was Hot Pursuit 2. |

^ANOTHER DEAD TROLL^

I was about to get on you about that old game, but I remember the NEW 2010 Hot Pursuit was released now. Nah, not yet, though I hear it's amazing and is more online based. In my opinion, I still think Most Wanted is the best NFS out there. And yes I am a NFS fan myself. I own a few of the classic NFS games including the Porsche Edition. I have Most Wanted, Carbon and Undercover. Their last one with pro streets, didn't win me much with the "Grand Turismo Theme". But I hear the 2010 Hot Pursuit revived cops. Does it revive the Heat Levels like in Most Wanted and Carbon? Just curious. Edited by =SF SonicPro=, Oct 28 2010, 06:30 AM.

Personally I thought Most Wanted and Shift were marvelous entries in the series, and I would hate it if we never got to play them. The rest of the games since Hot Pursuit 2 though I could probably do without. In any case, my favorite entries in the series are still the ones where it was all about racing gorgeous supercars along gorgeous countryside lanes, with cops occasionally chasing you. So I'm very much looking forward to this throwback to the older games and I will be getting it the day it comes out.
Uh...there's been a few games since Pro Street. Ever hear of Undercover, Nitro, and Shift? Shift's the only one really worth your time, if you ask me though. Shift is what Pro Street should have been. The graphics are a lot better, there's no "Fast and Furious" theme to it, and the racing is a lot more intense and a lot more fun.
From the sound of it, I would say no. It looks like this game is going to go with how cops are handled in older NFS games. Instead of a multitude of weak police cars that you can easily flip over and destroy, you will have a handful of cops with advanced AI that will not give up on catching you for the entire race. And you can play as a cop or a racer too. Plus this game's supposedly going to be a lot more online-based, with you going up against cops controlled by other players. |

I thought Shift was good; it felt fast and was fairly pretty. I probably liked it more than Pro Street and Undercover. Anyway, I played the demo, and I'm more excited than I was! HP2 was the first NFS game that I played (and I played it a lot), so I'm really looking forward to this game. Maybe it's the one that will revitalize the series' sales. |

I forgot about Shift... Well Carbon, Underground, etc were all meh to me. I was excited about Most Wanted being the return of cops, but it was mainly just Carbon in the day with cops in it. Shift was actually pretty good, but it was just a "hold-me-over" until Gran Turismo 5. It really wasn't even close to GT5 and Forza is better as well. Imo, at least. I still liked the game, but I'm so happy they're going back to Hot Pursuit. |

Most Wanted came out first (2005). So it was actually Carbon (2006) that was Most Wanted in the night. And both games had cops too. They just weren't as central to the gameplay in Carbon.
You're neglecting to mention where the game shines...making the racing experience feel visceral. The cockpit view is magnificent with how it bounces and jumps over bumps in the road. If you set your suspension too hard, you literally can't see when you go over bumps because the car's kicking up and down too much. That was a very, very nice touch that I really liked. I also like how they simulated your driver's reactions to collisions. You actually hear your driver grunting from impacts, not to mention the camera blacking out and whiplash from hard hits. It may seem like a small thing, but that to me was an awesome idea. You no longer think of the driver you're playing as a simple remote-control robot, but a real human being in the car. This does a really great job at drawing you into the car and making you feel like you're there. No lie...while Shift is not purely realistic, it's the one game that most closely matches the feel and experience of actually racing. When I'm playing Shift, the way I feel is quite comparable to how I feel when doing autocross in real life. When I'm playing most other racing games, I have a pretty neutral expression on my face most of the time. When I'm playing Shift, I have a very, very serious look on my face with my eyes narrowed. That's just like how I am when I'm in autocross. Edited by Nail Strafer, Oct 29 2010, 01:45 PM.

I've been looking into this, I've been getting into racing games after spending some time with Forza 3 but have been looking for something more arcadey. Plus I can annoy Eevee by saying 'Can't catch me copper!' over and over again. |

Flying Battery Act 2

I bought it yesterday and now I've had a chance to sit down with it for a few hours. It's basically a Burnout game with the police pursuit system of Hot Pursuit 2 on top. Drifting around turns is ludicrously easy, the cars go stupid fast, you get a "CRASHED!" screen when you run into something too hard, and you are rewarded with more boost...erm...NITRO...for risky driving. I will say this does bother me. You'll do better at this game if you're a great Burnout player versus a great Need For Speed player. The game plays all right as a Burnout clone, but I want it to be more like Need For Speed. What bothers me the most of all is that there doesn't even seem to be an option for manual transmission. It just doesn't feel right if I can't shift the gears myself. I question why the game even has a tachometer if you can't use anything but automatic. Aside from the Burnout-esque handling and nitro system, it pretty much plays like Hot Pursuit 2 from back in the day. The biggest difference is that there's a big stress on playing as both a cop and a racer, and you have separate careers for both. I think I like being a cop better, mostly because it's something different from just racing. Plus you have lots of neat police tools to use on racers. If you've played Hot Pursuit 2, you've seen nearly all of them before. Roadblocks, helicopters, spike strips, and EMPs are your weapons. I would give it a 7/10. It's decent fun, but it's too much like Burnout, and not enough like Need For Speed. Plus, I just wish they'd done more with this idea than simply remaking Hot Pursuit 2 with Burnout mechanics and called it a day. Yeah, it evokes classic NFS, but it doesn't feel like much of an evolution either. So far, I wish I hadn't bought it new for $60. I think I should have waited till it got cheaper. I noticed the Burnout feel. I think it keeps the NFS feel with a hint of Burnout. Mainly it's just the crazy speed and drifting that makes it have a Burnout feel, but then again Underground had that same crazy speed in it. I liked what I played of it and I too liked the Cop portion better, but I will have to push this game aside... As soon as I heard Gran Turismo 5 was being released next week this suddenly went on the back burner. Perhaps next year. |

I'm blasting through the solo cop career. The only issue I have on the PC is it getting near-slideshow framerates >_> But a lot of other players have been complaining about it too, so it seems to be a code optimization thing. |

With the exception of drag racing, Underground definitely doesn't have the same speed range. Because you're in an urban environment, Underground's tracks are a lot more technical and require you to slow down much more. In contrast, most of Hot Pursuit's roads have gentle curves you only need to brake a little bit for. Once you've braked you can just let the drifting do the rest of the work in getting you through the turn. This is precisely what Burnout is like. Hot Pursuit 2 had the same kind of gentle curves, but you had to slow down for them considerably more because the car wouldn't auto drift. This is why I say it's more Burnout than Need For Speed. |

I had a couple of pursuits end in about 30 seconds too Had one guy in a green Lambo I hit with a roadblock about 20 seconds into the chase, then I took him down with a spike strip after I got in front of him. But the pursuits are getting harder. As you keep going, the racers start using jammers to keep you from using your equipment, they'll start pulling sudden 180s to throw you off, and they get more health too. The worst is when they jam your equipment and then you come to an intersection where they can take multiple routes. You can't see your map when you're being jammed, so if you guess wrong on which way they went you're screwed. |
