 As Lance materialized near Taylor, a small coughing fit suddenly overtook him. Though the event only lasted but a few moments, the Oakland Resistance Division Agent found it to be an inconvienance. As he chanced a look around the area, the canine was quick to take notice of thick dust swirling around.

"Well, that explains it all..."

Alright. Basically, this is where I came from before I started hopping dimensions. I haven't been back here in many years; I really just want to see if some people I knew are still alive, see what's changed since I've gone. But it's been so long, I'm not sure what to expect. I want to be prepared if home turns out to be... hostile.

"So, we're kind of like backup should things get a little unruly?" Lance inquired, crossing his arms over his chest, wondering why exactly he and Artemis had been brought here.

So we are here to provide backup in the event that something goes amiss? Most illogical.

Lance found himself regarding the android with a rather bemused expression on his face. "How is that illogical? Makes reasonable sense to me."

 "Knowing my luck, it's never if things go amiss. It's when and how badly they do," Taylor replied. "But like I said. Depending on how they screw up, I might find myself unable to act in a decisive manner." A few moments passed while Taylor weighed his next words. "Of course, if we're lucky, everything might already be screwed up for us." He started heading down the road in the direction the signpost seemed to be pointing. "But I hadn't expected it to be this empty..."

 Artemis looked at Lance. "Really?" he asked, referring to the husky's response to his claim of Taylor's reason illogical. "Perhaps I process data differently than your kind." he stated. "It is not so much "overkill", as Taylor put it, so much as it is odd. I know Taylor has more allies than just us, so why request our asisstance specifically? Besides, Taylor is no novice at defending himself, I'm sure."

The android took note of Taylor's comment. "But I hadn't expected it to be this empty . . . "

"Indeed." the android responded robotically. "This is quite foreboding." He looked at the dust that caused Lance to cough as it drifted away. His eyes flickered briefly before he began to follow Taylor. "Will you be alright?" Artemis asked Lance, seemingly uncaring. "If the dust bothers you, I suggest wrapping a scarf or something similar around your mouth."

 As Lance listened to Taylor speak, the husky had the strangest feeling there was more to this town than what met the eye. What, the Mobian had naught a clue. And perhaps, just perhaps, he was looking too far into this. After all, they had only just arrived in the small hamelt. And nothing had gone wrong, save for the dog's coughing fit. And speaking of which, Artemis had something to say about that.

If the dust bothers you, I suggest wrapping a scarf or something similar around your mouth.

The first thing Lance picked up on was not the android's words, but his tone of voice. "This guy almost acts as if he doesn't care! What gives?" "No, I'll be fine," the canine replied, hoping to end the conversation than and there. And thankfully, Taylor had decided to head further down the road - maybe the change in enviroment would do some good.

 "The hamlet wasn't here when I was. The town must've grown some..." Taylor said before something on the wall of one of the nearby buildings--cottages, really--caught his eye. It was a small notice that he took from the wall. "Hm. 'Royal' announcement? This region was ruled by council... that coup must have worked. That explains why nobody's around. So maybe..." Taylor shook his head. "Guess we head for the town proper." He got walking again, it would be a while before they got within sight of a castle town as one might have seen if feudal eras did not decline.

 Artemis nodded and followed Taylor. He looked at a small cloud of dust as it blew by the group. "I apologise," he began, looking at the others. "But this dust may hamper my equipment. Please, give me a moment." Artemis raised a hand to his headset, gently and slowly turning a dial. The echidna then pulled his coat's collar up, covering his mouth even though the dust did not seem to bother him.

"There." he said. "Now I will be able to function at maximum effeciency." he continued to follow the others, occasionally looking around. Behind the collar of his coat, various bulges moved around his shoulder and torso, as if snakes were slithering around his chest. Artemis inhaled deeply through his nostrils every few seconds.

 "So this little town wasn't even here when you where I see," Lance remarked, observing as Taylor removed a notice from the wall of a cottage. "Oh? What do you have there?" he inquired, head tilted to the side in curiousity.

"Maybe what? And what is this Coup you are refering to?"

Guess we head for the town proper.

As he watched Taylor walk off, Lance shrugged his shoulders. He figured it was best to simply follow him for now. Questions could later. For now, it was time to head for the town.

This dust may hamper my equipment. Please, give me a moment.

Upon hearing Artemis' statement, Lance looked back at the andriod, one eyebrow raised. "What equipment? I didn't see him with any equipment..." It was then that the echidna pulled up his collar, covering his mouth.

Now I will be able to function at maximum effeciency.

"And what on Mobius could he mean by that?" Lance asked himself as he continued to follow Taylor. "I will admit though; there was something very familar about his last statement..."

 Taylor nodded. "Yeah, it's complicated. I'd overheard something about a plot to overthrow the council in power at the time; now I didn't think much of it, but the people who were trying to do it didn't want witnesses. Ultimately, I got shot and had just fallen off a bridge when I first jumped dimensions." He shrugged and slowed down. "Any other questions before we go any farther? Because once we get into town, we're gonna cause a big-time stir. Don't want you guys going in blind." The breeze was dying down, the dust settling.

The echidna's voice was perfectly clear, despite his mouth being covered by his coat's collar."Perhaps one question before we continue." he responded to Taylor's question. "Approximently how big of a "stir" do you expect? From what I can gather from what you said, it sounds as if they will be loaded for bear." Artemis rubbed his arm. "And should we be prepared to utilize lethal force?"

 When Taylor asked if there were any questions, Lance was quick to speak up. "Why yes, yes there is something I'd like to know. Did you have any clue as to the identity of at least one of the people involved?" As the Freedom Fighter waited for the human to reply, he found himself looking back at Artemis. It was only for a second, hopefully not long enough for the android to notice him. What surprised Lance was that Artemis' voice perfectly clear - where it should have been muffled slightly because of the collar covering it.

"More and more does that guy remind me of someone."

 "Hey, I wasn't always a tough paranorm mercenary, alright? Nah, started out here as an artisan, if you can believe that," Taylor replied defensively to Artemis's crack. "Anyways, shouldn't be much more than a token garrison if we have to fight anything armed. They're kinda behind as far as technology is concerned, but 'magic' as I call it is pretty common. Depending on their tactics, we'll either overwhelm them with a brief show of force, or they'll literally stonewall us and capture us with minimal effort. They aren't 'shoot to kill,' last I knew. Either way, the confrontation won't last long," he explained. "As for getting back at those involved in 'killing' me that night... It's been long enough, I don't remember what they look like, and I doubt they would recall my face either. Not really something that matters right now."

Lance nodded in satisfaction at the human's words. For a garrison typically wasn't that much of a challenge. Well, at least it wasn't back on the husky's home planet. When Taylor mentioned that they were behind technology wise, that only served to bolster the sky blue Mobian's good feeling about all this.

Or they'll literally stonewall us and capture us with minimal effort.

Lance's ears drooped. "Well, maybe this won't be as easy as I figured. Fantastic."

As for getting back at those involved in 'killing' me that night... It's been long enough, I don't remember what they look like, and I doubt they would recall my face either. Not really something that matters right now.

"Fair enough," the dog replied with a nod.

 Artemis listened to the words of the human. He laughed humourlessly. "Of course." he said. "It wouldn't be a worthwhile challenge if there wasn't some undeterminable variable to present itself." The echidna raised his hands, cracking his knuckles and neck. "Regardless," he added, "I doubt they will prove too much of a threat for us." Despite the cocky nature of his words, Artemis' voice did not include the nessesary emotions to make it seem as if he truely believed his own confidence.

 Taylor simply shrugged noncommittally, and they would soldier on for a while before they entered the town proper. As they reached the cobbled street, Taylor noticed something that looked like a skeleton made of a brassy metal. "I suppose everybody's to listen to the announcement, then... I didn't know they used automatons in the guard. Must be a new policy. Thankfully it isn't wound. I think we'll have easy going from here," he said. "We should go a little deeper into town then find someplace to wait until nightfall. Didn't think we'd have the 'quiet' option."

 For the umpteenth time that day, Lance found himself being reminded of someone he knew thanks to the actions of Artemis. It was the lack of emotion the echidna displayed which clued the sky blue Mobian in on this. He had seen that before, knew who and what it was with this little 'issue'. However, the time to confont Artemis about it would come later. Right now, the trio had other things to worry about.

Such as the metal skeleton sitting in the street.

The object intrigued Lance quite a bit for reasons he could not fathom. But as he silently examined it, an idea crawled into his mind. "I wonder if we could...nah, that would take someone with electronic knowlege, something I have little of. But if my theory about Artemis is correct..."


We should go a little deeper into town then find someplace to wait until nightfall. Didn't think we'd have the 'quiet' option.

Lance's head snapped over to Taylor when the human spoke. The canine looked back at the automation than shrugged his shoulders. Looks like he was going to have to wait somemore...
