Sandopolis Act 2
|
Two audiodiscs, sent to two different friends, in two different worlds. On the discs, a request for help from people the sender could trust. "I understand I haven't been in contact recently, though you should still recognize my voice. I'm calling in a solid, and I've gone through hellish lengths to do so. I just need people I can trust right now, people I can share secrets with so they don't come back to bite me in the ass." The voice's owner paused to take a breath. "Alright. I'm asking you and another person to meet me where I've set up shop for a while." With each disc, a small silvery crystal. "To reach where I'm staying right now, take the crystal that's in the package to the following coordinates: thirty-eight, twenty-two north by one-oh-six forty-seven west. Once you've reached that area, crush the crystal and scatter the resultant dust. It should, I am told, trigger an interdimensional jump to the town I'm staying in. I'll meet you at the 'Lakeview Motel'. Once the three of us are present, I'll explain the situation. I'm sorry I'm giving you the runaround like this, you folks deserve better than that, but it's a sensitive situation of a personal nature. I don't want to risk giving enemies of any of us ammunition that could be used against me. Be seeing you. End recording." The sender of the messages, one transient human mercenary by the name of Taylor Hiss, stood on a motel balcony overlooking a lake, looking out into the sunset. A light breeze ruffled his brown hair and the cream-colored fake fur lining the collar of his black bomber jacket. The door to the motel room lay open immediately behind him, a large duffel bag visible on the cheap bed. He second-guessed his ploy to contact those friends, but aside from face-to-face meetings he didn't have the patience for, he couldn't really think of anything. It'd been about, he couldn't remember, a week or two since he had sent out the message. He'd watch the sunset for a while until he got the call from the front desk. He sighed. Ultimately, the problem came down to family business, and he was worried the people he had once called his. |

" . . . End recording." the message finished. A white echidna with red stripes on his dreadlocks looked at the disc as he ejected it from a small device in his hand, and then at the crystal in his other. "Downloading information." he said, information coursing through a cable in his arm connected to the device. "Download complete." The echidna again gazed at the disc. Nodding, he threw it on the ground, smashing it beneath his boot. <Best not to leave any residue for possible reassembly." the echidna, Artemis, told himself. He gathered the shards of the disc in his hand and swallowed them without hesitation. One with exceptional hearing could determine the sound of hundreds of pieces of the disc being incinerating within his stomach. Artemis began to write a message explaining his absence to the doctor, then decided against it and deleted the file. He placed the crystal inside a small compartment in his chest before picking up a device the size of a suitcase. In fact, that was precisely what it looked like. The echidna slung his luggage over his shoulder and headed for the door. He opened the gateway to the outside world, stepped out, and locked the doors leading to what was assumed by most to be an abandoned warehouse. He looked around at the various vehicles patrolling the sky. The echidna blinked, and cloaked himself using an advanced stealth program. He scanned the ruined city around him, people walking around like mad men and speaking to themselves, and proceeded down the road without paying any mind to what was going on around him. (I'm pretty sure he said to crush the crystal, not the disk) On the distant planet of Mobius, the whir of propeller blades filled the air. A forest green biplane hovered over the very coordinates that had been mentioned in aylpor's recording. The landscape consisted of a deset. Large sand dunes sprang from the ground, the wind acting an amatuer scupture as it moved sand from one mound to another. "You sure this is the right place? " "The sysytem never lies. I can gurantee you we are in the correct area." "Well, if you say so. I trust your judgement." "Ah, don't trust me, trust the GPX." There was a quick chuckle from the first of the Mobians. "Haha. Well, if you say so." Agent Lance Trundalt of the Oakland Resistance Division looked down at the barren terrain below. The Siberian Husky recalled the events that had broight him here, flashbacks flooding his mind all at once, as if someone had burst a dam besides him and the water that came crashing onto him was a bunch of memories. End recording. Lance sat at the dinner table, the message that he had recently played working its way back into his mind. The sky blue canine sighed deeply, runining a paw over a small tuff of fur that stuck out of his foredhead. Another husky soon entered in the room, her fur a deep purple color. Following behind her were two smaller dogs, both in a heated arguement - well, for a couple of six year olds at least. "Was not!" "Was too!" "Was not!" "Mom!" Normally, Blaire Trundalt would have handled this situation with the utmost accuity that she, even as a teenager, had always been known for. Today, however, was different. This arguement had been going on since ten that morning. And it was know three-thirty. And everytime the husky told the twins to behave, they would . For about five minutes. Then the two young pups would be at it again, thier bickering trying even Blaire's ironclad patience. Now, it took all her willpower to prevent her from outright yelling at them. "Set a goood example for your children, Blaire. Act like you're in control. Because you are in control." "Shard, Isis." The two young Sibeirian Huskies turned to face thier mothir, thier posture srtaight thier eyes bright, and thier grins large. "Stop that. Right now," Blarie demanded, her body stiff as she spoke. The two children cocked thier heads to the side, and looked at thier mother with unblinking eyes. "I don't know how many times I told you two to knock it off. But either way, neither of you did what I asked for more than a few minutes. Therefore, I want you both to march straight to your rooms, and stay there for the rest of the day." The collective grins on Shard and Isis's faces melted, as did they themselves, like someone had placed them inside the lava pool of a volcano. "What? But mooooommmmm!" Shard drawled, not at all pleased with this. "No 'buts', young man. Rooms. Now." With slouched postures, both of the small huskies marched out of the room, silently cursing thier misfortunes. As soon as his children were out of sight, a concerned Lance spoke up. "Rough day dear?" "Oh, wouldn't you know it. What am I going to do with those two?" "Ah, they'll grow out of it eventually. Say..." the blue-furred dog hesistated for a moment, gesturing to the audiodisk on the table. "I was wondering if you remembered Taylor Hiss." Blaire tilted her head to one side. "That human you met last year? Yes, I remember." "Well, he asked me to...do something for him..." "Lance? Lance? Hey Lance, snap out of it!" Like someone had pressed down a switch in his mind, the Siberian Husky felt the flashback stop then and there, and found himself back in the realms of reality. He turned his head to see the pilot of the plane, a blue-furred hare staring at him with a somewhat concerned look on his face. "Are you alright? You kind of blacked out for a moment there." Lance waved a paw nonchalantly. "Yeah, I'm good, Pierce. Just memories flooding back to me is all. Nothing more." Pierce Stratosh nodded simply, trusting the dog's judgement. "Very well than," he told his friend and commander, as he pulled a lever that opened the door of the plane. "You ready for this?" Lance tugged at the straps of the knapsack that held his parachute. "As ready as I'm going to be." The hare flashed a thumbs up. "Good luck, Lance!" "Thanks." "Hopefully I won't need a whole lot..." With those parting words said, the sky-blue Siberian Husky stealed his courage for what he was about to do. As soon as he was ready, he leapt out of the plane, the grip of vacillation not even trying to hold him back. .......................................................................................................................................... A pair of black boots gently touched the soft sand, thier owner silently praising his good fortune. "As usual, I find this to be the easy part. Now for stage two." The Mobian produced from his vest pocket the same crystal that Taylor had packaged along with the disk. He examined it, the silver surface glistening in the desert sunlight as he turned it. "Here goes nothing." Lance placed the gem on a small boulder and then pulled out one of his dirks. With one swift motion, he thrust the handle of the weapon into the crystal, the force strong enough to shatter it into several pieces. Several more times he repeated this action, until he had grounded the jewel into fine dust. With a wave of his paw, Lance scattered the pieces of crystal, the wind blowing them around the Oakland Resistance Division Agent. The dog closed his eyes.... And found himself surrounded by the buildings of a suburb town. "Ah, this must be the place." (Yeah, I'm using an older version of one of my characters for this one. He'd be about...29 by then) Edited by HollyYoshi, Oct 24 2010, 11:16 AM.

Okay. That'd be one, thought Taylor as he straightened from watching the sunset. Taylor had, over time, built up a 'sense' of when a jump happened within a couple of miles. Old demon's right in one. Guess I should grab my gear before they get here, be ready to go. |

(@ Blaire: I know. He crushed the disk so that no one could find it and learn where he had gone.) Artemis looked at the surrounding desert. While it was as hot as a desert would be, he was unaffected. The android scanned the horizen as he walked, tracing to coordinates given to him by the audio disc. He looked over at a boulder, seeing a light scratch in its surface, and recently made. Ignoring this, he drew the crystal from his storage compartment. Artemis studied the crystal. It was made of a material even he, with his near limitless stores of such knowledge, could not determine. Not knowing made the android somewhat uneasy, as he was accustomed to understanding how things worked. Shaking the thoughts from his head, he held the crystal in front of him, in between his index finger and his thumb. He dropped it in his palm and closed his fist. With a single clench, the crystal shattered like a lightbulb hitting the floor. He opened his palm and dispersed the dust as instructed, and waited. Quite suddenly, the echidna-disguised android found himself in a town whose location was unknown to him. The android looked around. Spying a bench, he walked over to it. A woman sitting on it scooted over to make room for him, but he simply sat on the ground, creating a deep depression in the ground with his deceptively high weight. He leaned back against the ground, folded his arms behind him, and waited for Taylor. As he waited, he looked around for anyone who might be the other person Taylor spoke of. |

"So this is where Taylor asked me and some other guy to meet him? Fair enough, seeing as how this seems to be a nice town and all that. I'd be a bit nervous if we were meeting in some old ruins or something." Lance said to himself. The Siberian Husky took a moment to examine the area of town he had found himself in. It was a typical suburban neighborhood, complete with all the furnishings of such. The houses looked as is they had been taken well care of, with not a speck of paint peeling off, nor a single plank of wood rotting from old age or water damage. "How to find this Lakeview Motel I'm supposed to meet everyone at," Lance told himself, a grin crossing his muzzle, as he began to head to the east. With any luck, his seach would yield fruit, and he would find himself at his destination with little difficulty. ................................................................................................................... Several minutes later, the sky blue Mobian found himself looking up at a large sign that conviently read 'Lakeview Motel.' Nodding silently to himself, the dog soon located a nearby bench. And besides that bench was Artemis, who unknown to the husky had been waiting for both him and Talyor. |

Alright. They should both be here. Taylor went back into the room and retrieved the duffel bag and headed out. As he rounded the corner of the building, he saw Artemis and Lance out by a roadside bench. "Ah-huh. Well, I suppose I forgot to take into account a few minor cultural differences... But still. Artemis, great, you're just the guy I was hoping to see. And Lance, this is a surprise, but likely one that'll work out for the better," he nodded as he spoke. "Alright. Walk with me." |

Artemis glanced over at he husky now sitting next to him, but then closed his "eyes" and continued to wait. After several minutes of waiting, Artemis opened his eyes to see Taylor standing in front of he and the husky. The android stood, revealing the deep depression his abnormal weight caused. After brushing off the grass from his clothing, the echidna nodded towards Taylor. "A pleasure to see you as well, Taylor." he said monotonously. Excitement wasn't exactly something he was accustomed to displaying. "And Lance, this is a surprise, but likely one that'll work out for the better." Taylor said, speaking to the canine who'd been sitting next to Artemis. The echidna looked at the husky. "So," he said, as unlively as ever. "You are the other person Taylor summoned. My name is Artemis." At Taylor's word, Artemis began to follow him. |

Lance had taken to standing close to the bench. A light wind snaked through the area, ruffling the Siberian Husky's fur. The dog sighed deeply, wondering how much longer he would have to wait. It was just at that moment when the sound of footsteps reach his ears. The dog lifted his head up, findng himself looking at an arriving Taylor. Ah-huh. Well, I suppose I forgot to take into account a few minor cultural differences... But still. Artemis, great, you're just the guy I was hoping to see. A pleasure to see you as well. The first thing Lance took notice of was the lack of sincerity in the voice of the echinda that had responded to the Taylor. The sky blue Mobian wasn't sure why that would be, but from his vantage point, it almost seemed as if the fellow 'Mobian' wasn't too keen on helping the human out. And Lance, this is a surprise, but likely one that'll work out for the better. "Let's hope so, at any rate," the Oakland Resistance Divsion agent replied, the tone of his brogue supplying more then just mild interest. As Lance and him began to follow Taylor, the echinda addressed the husky; So you are the other person Taylor summoned. My name is Artemis. For the second time since meeting him, the blue dog took notice of the android's lack of ethusiasm. However, he felt it better not to say anything about that and instead opted to reply just to his comment. "I'm Lance. Lance Trundalt of the Oakland Resistance Division. Pleasure working with you." |

"Yeeaah... Lance, don't worry about Artemis, he's not exactly the emotive type," Taylor said. Then he lowered his voice. "I'm sure you're wondering why I'm going to all this trouble. Can't say anything yet, not here. Don't want to risk anything getting back to my 'friends in high places' this time. I'll tell you when we get where we're going." He was glancing every which way, but there wasn't anything suspicious. After a few minutes' walk, they came to an alleyway. "Alright. My friends on the other side say this is where I want to make the last jump. Stay close, now." He drew a crystal, like those from before, from within his coat, touching opposite facets with his fingers, and with a slight effort, it crumbled into dust that he caught in his other hand. He threw the dust into the alleyway, and the air distorted as if in a heat haze. Nodding to himself, Taylor stepped into the alleyway, into the haze, and vanished. |

Artemis said no more after introducing himself. Being raised in solitude by a man who prefered to be alone when working on his projects, Artemis was inexperienced when dealing with other people. Because of this, he often only spoke when spoken to or when introducing himself. Upon reaching the alley, Artemis listened to what Taylor said. "Hmm." he muttered. <Taylor seems on edge.> the android thought to himself. He'd noticed Taylor's shifty eyes as they walked to the alley. Artemis looked around. There wasn't anything too interesting, aside from several stains on the ground and walls that Artemis couldn't determine the cause of. He watched Taylor crush a crystal and scatter it around the alley. Upon the human disappearing, Artemis looked where he'd been. "Odd." he said without emotion. "This temporal rift seems to have a more noticable effect on the surroundings than the ones we used to get here." Artemis pressed several buttons on the side of the headset he wore. <Mental note,> he recorded silently. <Distortion caused by the crystals' temporal rifts appears to vary depending on the destination and demensional distance. Further observation required.> Lowering his hand from his head, Artemis glanced at Lance. "I believe the time this rift is open is short," the android stated in his usual tone. "Best make haste." The android then followed Taylor into the haze. (Note: The recording Artemis did is something I've been considering for his character; just a way to keep track of things he finds interesting in his adventures, based purely on what he believes is going on or just happened. If this gets annoying or inconvieniant, just tell me and I'll delete them.) |

Yeeaah... Lance, don't worry about Artemis, he's not exactly the emotive type. "I can see that," the sky blue husky mused, carefully eyeing the android echidna. However, the Mobian was quick to realize that he could have come off as intrusive. Thus, with one smooth, deliberate motion, he shifted his attention back to Taylor. "Fair enough." I'm sure you're wondering why I'm going to all this trouble. Can't say anything yet, not here. Don't want to risk anything getting back to my 'friends in high places' this time. I'll tell you when we get where we're going. As Taylor spoked, Lance noticed that the human seemed to be a little paranoid, the way his eyes shifted in ever direction. The O.R.D agent considered asking him what was up, when the trio found themselves near an alleyway. Alright. My friends on the other side say this is where I want to make the last jump. Stay close, now. Lance, a bemused frown on his visage, tilted his head to the side. "'Other side?' What could he mean by that?" Before that question could be answered, however, there were some other things that needed to be taken care of first, such was apparent. Lance took note of crystal Taylor pulled out, one very much akin to that he himself had used to get here. When the human crushed the gem and scattered the dust-like remains around, Lance saw how the air disorted in a different fashion than before. Odd. This temporal rift seems to have a more noticable effect on the surroundings than the ones we used to get here. "Yes, yes it does," the canine replied. I believe the time this rift is open is short. Best make haste. "Right then," the Mobian said, following Artemis inside. |

Sandopolis Act 2

Artemis and Lance had emerged near Taylor, next to an old wooden signpost on a dusty dirt road. The sign wasn't in any alphabet either of them would be familiar with. "Actually, it's the exact same, but I'm guessing you were in the midst of the distortion created. I heard you," Taylor said. "Alright. Basically, this is where I came from before I started hopping dimensions. I haven't been back here in many years; I really just want to see if some people I knew are still alive, see what's changed since I've gone. But it's been so long, I'm not sure what to expect. I want to be prepared if home turns out to be... hostile." |

Artemis looked at the surroundings, unimpressed. "Rather inconspicuous place, isn't it?" he asked, bored. He took note of the language written on the sign, making a mental picture of it. The echidna listened to Taylor's explanation as to why they had been invited. "So we are here to provide backup in the event that something goes amiss?" he asked doubtfully. "Most illogical." The echidna fiddled with his headset again. He scanned the dirt road they stood on for any traces of recent activity. "Is that truely why we were brought here?" he asked, almost sounding dissappointed. He waited for an answer and moved from his spot on the road, again leaving a deeper than average depression. |

Sandopolis Act 2

"Why, seems like overkill, Artemis? Three additional reasons, then. First, I want to gauge whether or not someone from outside this dimension is already screwing around here. I'll probably be able to tell that by how people on the street react to us, god knows they won't recognize me. Second, if extradimensional interference, or 'meta bullshit' as I prefer calling it, is going on, it's good to call on unknown factors like you guys. And third..." Taylor sighed. "Depending on the nature of the situation, I may be too emotionally invested in the situation to resolve it properly. And most likely I can't afford to second-guess what'll need to be done, especially if meta bullshit's afoot here. So I need someone who can remain detached, or at least professional, to get it done." |
