"I didn't use the whole thing ...."
|
Ok, I'm a few days late to the party, so I'll keep this brief. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) turned 25 years old on monday. Released on October 18, 1985, the device gave birth to Super Mario Bros, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and several other franchises that still live on today. When the NES hit store shelves in New York City a quarter of a century ago, the future of gaming was decidedly in doubt. Some believed the industry was on its last leg, and few retailers were willing to take the kind of financial risks they once did on games. But players got their hands on the 8-bit console, and many fell in love. And it wasn't until 1995 and well over 60 million worldwide unit sales later that Nintendo finally discontinued the U.S. version of the console. The company waited until 2003 to discontinue the Japanese model, known as Famicom. And on a little side note, the NES is just about a year younger than me.

Dude, that is epic. I have never played the NES, but I do have some of the classics from the NES on collections of the classics and stuff, mainly Zelda, to be honest I never really liked Mario. But anyways, that is pretty dang epic. Good thing I am still young. Now I don't feel old. |

...shiz as in another word for sh*t. Saying something is the sh*t is saying it is awesome. NES had Megaman1-6, Startropics, Zelda 1 and 2, Double Dragon, Metroid, Earthbound Zero, Kid Icarus, and more awesomeness. NES was awesome. I'm praising it. There, now that was all there really is to say on that matter. |

I object to your claims
|
Please note he said "The Sh*t, not just sh*t. Big difference. Calling something sh*t means that's it's bad. Calling something The sh*t means it's awesome. Anyway, back on topic: That thing's been around that long? Sheesh! I wasn't around when the NES came out but damn! I'm impressed a lot of the games are still fan favorites. Such a tribute to thier long-time popularity. |

Flying Battery Act 2
|
Hehe, I would have been a little over six months old when it came out. My first game was actually the original Super Mario Bros, which I played for the first time in 1990. My older cousin got one of them, and that game just hypnotized me. I've been a gamer ever since. I actually still have the original NES that she had. She gave it to me when she moved out of her parents' house. I used it through about the mid 90s, until the connection pins got so bent out of shape it couldn't detect the cartridges anymore. I'd just get the gray-black-gray-black screen loop for every game. At the time, I didn't care. I loved the SNES and I was excited about the Playstation and N64 coming out. Many years passed. I got a Generation NEX as a Christmas present around 2006, which is an imitation NES console that can play the cartridges and even use the same controllers. That got me interested in retro gaming. The problem is the Generation NEX couldn't play all cartridges. I was devastated when it wouldn't play Rad Racer II, which is the one NES game I really wanted to play the most. About a year more passed. I found out that one of my local game shops could repair old Nintendo systems for about $20 a pop. I brought my system in the next day, got the connection pins in the system replaced, and it was the greatest $20 I ever spent. I even learned a technique from the same shop about how to clean old cartridges...just spray some 409 cleaner on a Q tip and run the Q tip up and down the cartridge's connector. Between that and the repairs, I can now play pretty much every game in my collection with no problems (even ones that I thought were broke forever). I practically embrace the difficulty that many of the games have. Because when you beat an old, hard NES game, you feel (sorry if I sound sexist) like a MAN. About a month ago, I beat Rad Racer II for the first time (after a couple weeks of diligent practice). I have owned this game for nineteen years and only just now beat it. No lie...it was probably one of the greatest days of my life when that happened. Without a doubt, the NES is the one old console I spend the most time with, and the one I cherish the most (even more than the SNES and N64 that I used to idolize). The oldest system I've played on is a GBC... Not because of my age, because I just wasn't into video game consoles when I was young. |
