Todd:
Phantom: *

Here's something you might not have known about me: I love musicals. If I'm ever online, chances are I'm listening to something that was originally performed either on Broadway or Westend |3 I love the way this particular genre synthesizes so many different kinds of art--drama, stage special effects, costumes, song-writing and singing, and so on.

And my favorite composer? Stephen effing Sondheim. The man is a poet. His musicals, unlike so many others, communicate a wide variety of meaningful, complex ideas relevant to his audience without sacrificing compelling music and action. While shows like Cats can be fun, they tend to lack any kind of intellectual depth--or even plot |D And when these plays do try to make a point, they often end up being just reiterations (usually inferior) of old Sondheim themes--the most egregious example probably being Wicked. That musical, as good as it is, practically plagiarizes Into the Woods for theme, characters, and premise.

Bottom line, I've decided to start making some comparisons ^^ First up, Phantom of the Opera vs. Sweeney Todd. While the musicals themselves have little in common, both of them revolve around victims of society, whose love drive them to become hideous monsters striving to reclaim what they've unfairly been denied while exacting revenge on their enemies.

if you're unfamiliar with either character, here's the Phantom and here is Todd

Now, I've seen Sweeney Todd. I'm no musical guy (believe me, I'M NOT) so don't be surprised angry when I say, I had no idea what I was watching. To me it was just "singing, murder, talking, singing, murder, talking, end" xD

On the other hand, I've never seen The Phantom the whole way through to my knowledge, but I've seen snippets and it didn't seem like a bad musical movie.

So yea, not the most insightful post of all time, but I just thought you'd like some feedback. :D

Also, I picked Todd, because Depp was freakin weird in that movie, which is always good. xD

xD No worries. It was just a music video, not a coherent story <3 Unfortunately, if people aren't familiar with the respective stories ahead of time, chances are they won't understand the videos, which I can't really help without giving a much longer explanation than anyone would ever read |D

I hoped that the lyrics would suffice to demonstrate Sweeney's character |3

xD Oh! Well yeah =3 I guess I can see that, although I got it... if only because I followed the musical before I found the movie.
