He's Hiding Something...
|
![]() Developer: Nintendo Genre: Platformer Release Date: March 1, 1997 Number of Players: 1 Platform(s): Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Virtual Console Introduction Hello there Viewers, Gary-X here and I'm going to do my third review which will on Super Mario 64. This game was revolutionary to the Gaming World at the time, it has still aged well which is a good thing but let's get into the actual review. Story Well it's a Mario game so what do you expect, basically, in a nutshell. Princess Peach has invited Mario to the Castle for some Cake. When Mario gets there he finds out that the evil Bowser has taken over the castle and has trapped everyone into Paintings scattered around the castle, it's up to Mario to clear out all of the Paintings and rescue everyone, including the Princess. There was a Port made for the Nintendo DS which took a different approach from the Original, basically in that game, Mario got a letter from the Princess inviting him to the Castle for Cake, but the catch this time is that Luigi & Wario also got their hands on the letter, the threesome all went to the castle, but what they didn't know was that Bowser was in there and he kidnapped them and threw them into paintings as well! Fortunately, Yoshi was sleeping on the roof at the time and he, with a little help, has to save the three Plumbers so the Foursome can continue their mission to save the Princess. Graphics The Graphics were god like for the 90s. Gamers had never seen 3D done as well as what was done here, instead of the Camera just being stuck in one area, it followed Mario around wherever he went. The Graphics themselves were beautiful, Mario had never looked as good before in his life! The Levels were Varied and Colourful, just what a Mario game should be! This was the golden age for graphics like this and the likes of Sonic Adventure on the Dreamcast. The Graphics were very good overall. Controls The Controls are something which I wouldn't really talk about but this game's control scheme needs to be talked about. It was a perfect way to test the New-at-the-time Control Stick which would alow your character to move with ease without getting cramps from the D-Pad. The Basic Controls were... Control Stick: Move Mario Around C Buttons: Change View A Button: Jump B Button: Do Attacks and other tricks Z Button: Other Attacks and Tricks Overall controls were excellent examples of a control scheme in a 3D video game. Sound The Sound is excellent overall, the Soundtrack is very memorable with your Level Music and Overworld Music, both being excellent. The Jingles were sweet as well, from the Coins & One-Ups to the Level Changing ones, this was also the first Mario game to have Voice Acting, with Mario being voiced by Charles- Martinet, he did a good job overall with all of the other Voice Actors doing a good job as well. An Excellent Soundtrack Overall. Gameplay The Gameplay is the most important thing in a game which means it is important that it has good gameplay, well Super Mario 64 did that perfectly! You had to complete 15 different levels in order to complete the game, but it's not as boring as it sounds, you can take Mario anywhere you want in the stages so that you can get all 7 stars spread around the level and with the Coins you get. The Controls also make this game feel less enclosed as you can move around freely using the space that you're given, you are given lots of choice to do in order to make the journey to get 120 stars an easy one! Mario can also change powers such as to turn into Flying Mario, Invisible Mario, Metal Mario etc so that it doesn't feel as bland on your journey. As you progress through the game, more areas become unlocked for exploring. When you have enough stars & keys, you can fight different bosses as well, when you're done, you get a secret bonus, but I won't tell you what, it's a secret! Remakes As I mentioned earlier, there was a Port made for the Nintendo DS with slightly improved Graphics and Storyline, there were also 30 Extra stars added includind 1 in each level in order to make the gameplay seem longer, there were also three more playable characters, Luigi, Wario & Yoshi this time around with three needing to be unlocked. There was also a Remake made for the Wii's Virtual Console, there wern't very many changes from the original but it just made it even more nostalgic and better overall. OVERALL Storyline: 9.2 (Added a bit to usual Mario Storyline for the better.) Graphics & Presentation: 9.7 (Mostly amazing with very few flaws.) Soundtrack & Voicing: 9.5 (Some Very Nostalgic Music in here.) Gameplay: 10 (Perfect! Simply Perfect!) Replay Value: 9 (With Some Extra Stars to collect, your Gameplay won't end quick.) Overall Score: 9.5 A Very Amazing Game and Experience, could be one of my favourite games of all time! My favourite Mario Game and Favourite Nintendo 64 game indeed, You should definately buy this game! REVIEW ARCHIVE Sonic Adventure: 9.1/10 Sonic Adventure 2: 9.5/10 Super Mario 64: 9.5/10 NEXT REVIEW Wednesday 13 October

Personally I hated this game. It was terrible in my opinion. You start out the game being promised cake. I thought that was cool and I hoped it would be a good Mario game. I was wrong. It's not a side-scrolling game. It's not that that is bad but I like those more. Now lets talk about the stars. Why would you need stars to open doors? Seriously. And you have to jump into a painting to get them. WOULD MARIO THINK OF THAT? I think not. AND you have to have 120 stars to beat the game. Spoiler: click to toggle Oh and when you beat the game you never get the promised cake.Thats all I have to say about this for now. Please use the Spoiler tags next time. Personally I like the nintendo DS Release for it's challenging gettin' all 150 stars which is 30 more than the original one.... and the other thing about it I do have the virtual console one and I always do the famous endless stairs glitch! But still the n64 version came first before Nintendo Decided to rebuild the game and make the DS version and make the graphics so much better! |

I nostalgia'd a bit. Why are you writing reviews for old games, though? I mean, at least write reviews for old games that people don't remember too well, but were awesome. Like Road Rash and Battletoads. F##k yeah, Battletoads. |

Well that is how it started the DS one since that famous Luigi is in the Original Super Mario 64 Rumors and then Nintendo thought of making Super Mario 64 into a DS version where you can play as Luigi, Yoshi, and Wario, and Mario to save the princess! I have no clue how this stupid L is Real thing got started! |

This is the only Mario game I ever liked. It's awesome and up there with any classic game like Crash 3, Gex 3, Sonic Adventure, etc... I was just watching a speed run last night where a guy beat the game in 15 minutes, it was CRAZYYYYY!!! Although he cheated and glitched his way through a portion of it, but amazing nonetheless how he could go so fast and know where everything is. |

Sandopolis Act 1

Reviewing 3 of my favorite games of the era? Brief, but agree with you on all counts. The sandbox-style nonlinear gameplay was epic, and Mario's 3D games (at least the mainstream ones) were easy to tell just by watching that a lot of effort and thought was put into it. Mario's 3D goes for a more 'stable' approach than Sonic. |

Do you ever played the DS version oh master overlord? The DS one is pretty much the same but with luigi, yoshi, and wario joining in the game and you can play as them after you rescue them from their paintings and this has 150 that is 30 more than the original...
