During Nintendo's conference today, Nintendo announced the release date and pricing of their upcoming handheld, the Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS is due for release in Japan on February 26th 2011 and in America & Europe in March 2011. It is set to retail for 25,000 Yen which equates to $300. The Wii was at a similar pricepoint and retailled at $250. The 3DS has also been announced to have a Virtual Console for old GameBoy and GameBoy Advance games.

Mmmkay, I just watched the MGS 3DS trailer. If every game is going to look that good, it's $300 I'm willing to spend. :D

$300 is too much for a handheld, I say. That's console price right there... I think it may be cheaper in the U.S./West somehow because I don't see a $300 handheld doing so well here even with the massive hype because price can kill hype.

That's not necessarily true, Mettalix.

Divnich also reacted positively to the 3DS's announced Japanese price point, even if it is well above the ¥15,000 and $150 launch cost of the original Nintendo DS in 2004. According to the analyst, the price point isn't likely to discourage potential purchasers, due in large part to the functionality that money buys.

"The higher price point allows Nintendo to incorporate new features such as 3D movies, camera, and game support, as well as incorporating a more robust online network to aid Nintendo in evolving their product from a single-use, games-only platform to supporting the plethora of media and entertainment options that consumers have become accustomed to using on their handheld devices such as the PSP, smart phones, and tablet computers," he said.

$300 is a lot, and $250 is still a lot (more than the Wii!!!!), but it will sell like hotcakes. They'll be going for $500+ on EBay, I bet.

The 3DS is really interesting to me, though, so I'll get one after the first price drop/first reiteration.

@Kitm

Nintendo's main advantage over the competition is that it was always cheaper. That's why the DS took off so well because it wasn't expensive and parents weren't so minding of paying for something fairly inexpensive. $300 is a big price for a handheld in a bad economy. I'm sure it'll do well, but I don't think it'll do outstanding. I could be wrong though, but personally I would not pay that much for a handheld. $250 is my max and that's pushing it.
