Launch Base Act 2

Who here thinks it's about time for sonic games to start implementing 4 player battle modes? I'm not talking sonic shuffle, secret rings party games, I mean 4 player battle with the real sonic and co gameplay. Think sonic adventure 2, heroes, shadow, and 06 with this. It would definitely help with replay and fun factor, if 4 players could play against one another(or maybe even with) on stages from story mode. X) |

=SB= Sonic Logic Theorist.

That sounds cool to me, I always wondered how cool it would be if 4 players could race or what not in story levels. |

It sounds like a neat idea, but honestly I can't seem to see it working at all. And then I'd need to find three friends who would play with me.

Your fate is mine to decide.

Well, with the online capabilities avalible now, it'd be pretty easy to find people around the world to play with. Now we just need the game... |

Ah right, didn't think of that. Still, that's gonna require proper internet access, so my stance is still unchanged.

Hmmm... Well... Honestly, 2-player split-screen is clustered up enough for me. =P I prefer having the whole screen to myself. (tho' this might be because I always play by myself) But 4-player could probably work, I guess. Riders had 4P. I think that's the closest thing we have so far to a real 4P Sonic game. |

Hmm, if your talking about a cooperative Sonic experience. Sure, four players would be lovely. Or an four-player FFA Battle Arena will also work, because a 18-player experience would be fun in a multiplayer battle mode in most games. But, for a game series like Sonic... That would be taking it just alittle bit too far. |

While it's a nice idea that SA2 proved could work, at least with the Racing mode, I don't think now's the time to do it. For one thing, the current default gameplay style doesn't seem conducive to actual competition. Sonic's just too fast, so if you makes one mistake, it's over; Your opponent's probably a half-mile ahead. Also, considering how rigid the level designs as well as your options for navigating said designs actually are, it'd be difficult to include differently balanced racers that could ideally compete anyways. Overall, it seems like it wouldn't be about racing so much as doing another speed run and hoping your opponent doesn't know more ways to cut a few corners than you do. That limits the top racers to the people who simply figured out the best speed run and have developed the muscle memory to pull it off all the time. That's really not competitive racing. Of course, Sonic Team could simply create a Sonic game with different mechanics to make it work, but it will probably not be played by enough people to warrant the multiplayer mode and thus the game's existence in the first place. Remember, Sonic is primarily a single-player experience, so people don't buy the games for multiplayer, even the games that do have it, which means Sega's local multiplayer base is already insanely low. It's not enough to rework or completely forgo some of their most popular mechanics in years. Therefore, Sega would probably find it more viable to go to online multiplayer, but that route has problems in itself. Simply put, the market's way too saturated. Everyone's trying to steal a piece of Modern Warfare's pie, which means tons of games that have multiplayer that don't necessarily need it. The games involved suffer in quality, no one plays their multiplayer because they know they can get the absolute best competitive experience with, well, Modern Warfare, and it becomes that much harder for other games to make a case and stand out. But Sonic has one thing going for him: He's a platformer, not a shooter. How many online multiplayer platformers are actually out there? LittleBigPlanet? That may not be strong competition for Sonic simply because Sonic is more well-known, so it's very possible that Sega could get away with some big money if they did it right. But this is assuming the money for it is out there. Really, ask yourself, is the public really demanding online Sonic multiplayer? As I said before, people buy Sonic primarily for the single-player experience, which many have been shouting for years is broken anyways. They could care less about multiplayer. So where's the money in the venture? I think in this environment and in this era, it would not work for both mechanical and financial reasons. But maybe further down the line, who knows? |

*Chucks the Sonic MMO topics in the bin* Those ideas would never have got off the ground, anyway. ;D I guess it'd be more viable for the 2D Sonic games at the moment (As far as I know, all of the portables after Sonic Advance 3 have had SOME 2P capability), but Unleashed/Colours + 2P? A nightmare waiting to happen. :/ |
