Yo folks. Last night, I was in a big debate in the sega forums about multiple gameplay mechanics in one game, what sega has done with sonic since the adventure series. Upon debating with others, it's become apparent that there are some who thinks games with alternate mechs(for short), suck just for the reason alone. For example, I think Sonic adventure 2 battle is the best sonic game ever made. Again, that's just me, but people say it sucks because the alternates don't fit with sonic, are there in the first place, and take the focus off of sonic, which is hard to do with his name is in the title. Anyway, I can admit, in SA2, and other sonic games, the alternate mechs could have used polishing here are there, but it shouldn't out right suck because it doesn't live up tot he game that's "being ripped off", like in sonic unleashes' case compared to god of war, or that would completely cancel out the long line of beat'em ups that came before both games. Anyone care to discuss this? X) |

I object to your claims

I generally don't have a problem with multiple mechanics in gameplay. They just have to be done well. Take Sonic Adventure for instance. Part of the reason why that's one of my favorite Sonic games is because of the variety in gameplay. All the modes (with one exception of course) were done really well, starting out fun and remaining so throughout the game. And that...that's what I want in gameplay modes; something that'll stay fun until the very end. But Sonic Adventure 2.....*sigh* I'm going to be honest here; while I do like SA2, the multiple gameplay mechanics is one of the reasons I hold that game with a much lower regard then the majority of the fanbase. Not because they're there, but because of the way they were done. Take the emerald hunts for instance. Yeah, Knuckles' stages could be a bit frustrating in SA1, but it was hardly to the point where I didn't enjoy it. SA2's treasure hunting stages however...ugh...it's like a good portion of the fun has been sucked out. I found myself being more frustrated then enjoying those levels. There's about only a couple of Rouge's stages that I kinda enjoy. The shooting levels were better, but they got kinda boring at times, and even the speed levels I find lacked some of the spark other 3D Sonic games had. SA2 had good concepts, but they could have been done a lot better. Now, Unleashed was an excellent example of multiple gameplay mechanics done right. It's two modes (three if you want to count the Tornado mini-game thing in the 360 and PS3 versions) were loads of fun and I found myself enjoying them inmmensly. |

Juxtaposing multiple gameplay mechanics is simply an archaic design idea. It means you're essentially developing two or more games at once which usually assures that none of them are as polished as possible; It's developer suicide. The most notable examples of the idea, especially in modern times, try to marry different mechanics in the best way possible as it ultimately emphasizes the versatility of the core gameplay and assures extra polish will be done; The Galaxies are a prime example. Meanwhile, the Adventure series, 06, and Unleashed, from a design standpoint, actually clash. It's fast vs. slow, chaotic vs. methodological, rarely a union of both, which is potentially off-putting in times now where gamers are wanting more cohesive experiences. While I personally wouldn't have a problem with more Adventure-styled games, the formula as it stands now does show its age. It desperately needs updating, which can be done without completely eliminating the notable facets of the style. |

Personally, the only part of the adventure games that i enjoyed was playing as sonic. (or sonic & shadow in sa2's case) I enjoy games that have different characters, but I would rather have them play through the same stages, like the Sonic Advance series, characters that have similar yet unique move sets and abilities, to the point where they can utilize different paths and access areas that not every character can access. I agree with Blaire on SA2 Knuckles/Rouge levels were a nightmare, and you HAD to play them to beat the game. And as Bliz said, When you make a game that has 3 different genres (think Sonic=Platforming Tails=Shooting Knuckles=Puzzle as SA2) each game will not be as good as if you spent all of your effort in making an amazing platform game with a few different playable characters. I would rather see a game in the vein of Sonic 3 & Knuckles but in a 3D environment. Than another SA2. That was my least favorite part about Unleashed. I felt like jumping between night and day was like playing 2 separate sub-par games. Just My opinion on the matter. |

@Special Operative Blaire, I see where your coming from and I agree. Multiple gameplay mechs should be judged whether or not there were done right, not catching hell for being there. @Kansas City Shuffle and BlizShadow, I feel you guys to, but even if not the gold standard the titles are wanted to be, if the game is fun, you should still be able to enjoy, which is not the case with others I have talked to. people say Sonic unleashed is half a sonic game because the night stages had brawling gameplay, and get pissed off about it. If the style seem sub-bar to you, I can't argue that, but how much will you be able to build up on one gameplay style before there's enough variety for people to starting failing the game for? Some other would say, I but this game to play this, not this and another game, when the other game is a style of gameplay that they liked? If bomberman and buck bumble were combined into one game, I would feel as if I got my money's worth, because of the fact both games are good, yet the same reason would be frowned upon by others, even though both pretty much had generic goals with slight versatile ways to do it. Also, with hard enough work, a game with multiple gameplay style can have a place in a single game, if done right. This is just me though. X) |

Not that one game with reskinned characters is any less archaic, though. Variety's the spice of life, and I'd rather the Adventure style over the Mario or Classic Sonic style to at least keep the game fresh. This is epitomized in Heroes which is the very definition of monotony, and upon finding out that Luigi's campaign in Galaxy was the exact same as Mario's, I quit trying to get all the stars, (along with giving up on Luigi's Purple Coins :P). I've said the Adventure style can be updated to modern standards, and I wouldn't mind that being done. To be brief about the idea, multiple characters with the same basic controls and speed, give them a few differing abilities, and base those abilities around huge parts of the stages only they can access, i.e. stages within stages, (Essentially, my idea here). @ DJ: Just because a game is fun doesn't mean it's without flaws. I've had tons of fun with games that are mediocre or horrible, and I think it's high time both sides of the aisle learn to separate subjectivity from objectivity. Overall, we should strive for gold standards! As much money as we pay for games, the least we deserve is something that is technically competent. Even as much as I love Unleashed, I will not overlook things like Adabat's slowdown of Sonic getting stuck in places because I pressed the wrong button at the wrong time, nor will I overlook why the game's design choices in general are bothersome to others. These things are flaws; Why should anyone brush them under the carpet? If Sega had that same attitude of "Someone's going to find it fun so why bother fixing it up," there would be no motivation for them to improve the titles so more people would have reason to like the games in the first place. I usually don't fault people for complaining for the series' actual problems because they are valid and need addressing. Telling people to simply just enjoy the games doesn't really help matters. Besides, someone is going to bitch even if your games are good. There are people that bitch about the Mario titles, after all. You can't please everyone, but you can always do the best job possible regardless. |

I agree on what your saying on all points, but look at it this way: Sonic unleashed. The game is usually bashed by games and reviewers alike mostly because of the warehog. In any complaints, have I heard anything about the warehog being flawed in gameplay, but is flawed for an alternate gameplay from sonic, and the idea of the warehog itself. The only complaint I heard about the warehog that had anything to do with gameplay was that he was slow, which he was suppose to be. Yeah, games should be the best they can be, and should fix anything out of whack, but there are things some times that are just blown outta proportion. Shadow the hedgehog to, this game actually has some issue here or there, but you hardly here them out of "Shadow is so emo", "he's cussing to be tough", or "shadow doesn't need guns". The legit complaints about the game being that the spin-dash and homing attack were pretty much nerfed in this game, but hardly heard over the most likely said complaints. I'm not saying totally ignore the issues, cause sonic's high speed levels in 06 needed more work, which came in the form of unleashed in he day stages, but aside from legit bugs, people can't seem to just enjoy the games for what it is, instead of sweating the things that don't fit or belong, which I don't think should matter. People play all kinds of different games, why should sonic catch s**t for having other gameplay style, when his gameplay is still intact and updated. But like you said, people will still bitch about something anyway. People say knuckles would have been better than the warehog, and others say they spend 50$ for a sonic game, not half of one. Another thing I wanna bring up about the warehog: It also gets bashed for being similar to other characters with long range attacks, like God of war and street fighers Dhasilm. In that case, why don't other games get put down for being slightly similar to other then? With this mentality, God of War should have been bashed for copying Dhalsim, and that's if he's not compared to Mr. Fantastic from Fantastic 4. X) |
