Godmodding A Lesson In Why You Shouldn't Do It. Prelude: Howdy folks. For those of you who don’t know me, (and are too lazy to read the fancy lettering that is my username, I’m Blaire, one of your friendly neighborhood RP Knights. Now, in my short (but epic) career in RPing, I’ve seen many a skilled Role-Player. Unfortunately however, I’ve also encountered Rpers that, while they have the potential to be great, need a little work in some aspects. And one of those aspects might be learning not to godmod. Well, that’s where this tutorial comes in. Now I don’t claim this to be the end-all of all non-godmodding tutorials, nor do I claim to be an expert in the subject. I just want to help people become better RPers. So without future ado, let’s begin. What is Godmodding? So, you’re asking me what this ‘godmodding’ is that I am speaking of. Well the answer to that is…there is no one true answer. Godmodding can take on several forms in the wonderful world of RPing. But one thing you should know, is that no matter what form, godmodding violates Role-playing rules and is unjust to those that are trying to RP fairly. Not only that, but excessive godmodding in an RP can actually lower said RP’s fun factor. After all, who wants to Role-Play with someone who say, keeps auto-hitting another person’s character, or dodges every attack that is thrown their way? Not I, partners. Okay, the way this is going to work is as follows; I will have one 'lesson' per post. I will tell you the name of a form of godmodding, give a description, show an example, and then show you how you can avoid it. Let's begin with the first lesson; Auto-Hitting: Arguably the most common form of G-modding. It should be clear what this one means, but for those that are uniformed, Auto-hitting is saying your attack hit, without giving your opponent any time to react. Now, in order for me to demonstrate, imagine two people in a forum Role-Play; Player A, and Player B. Their respective characters are ‘Joe’ and ‘Bob’. (Wow, very original names. ) Anyway, these two are busily role-playing, when their characters get into a fight. Here’s what transpires:
Hold it….what? Okay, there are several things wrong here-and they all have to do with auto-hitting. Player A had his character punch, stab, and kick Bob, without giving Player B any chance to react! And what of Player B? He went so far as to have his character kill Joe? What?! These two both need a lesson in how to RP fights-definite godmodding going on with these two. Now, imagine that the lesson I mentioned has been given and both players find themselves Role-playing together again. Just like before their characters get into a fight. Only this time, things are a little different;
Ah, now that…that is how you RP fight scenes! As you can see, neither of them forced a hit and they each let the other player react to their attacks. This is a huge improvement in both Player’s styles. However, as you will soon see, they still have a ways to go. Tune in next time for the next lesson! |

Because they want their character to be the most awesomeoness and most powerfulness of all time... Or something like that. They think, "the more power I give the guy/girl, the more powerful he/she will be... Now, I've always used a little rule when making my characters have powers. If they have more then one power, explain how they got those powers in the bio. As well, make one of those powers barely use able to even things out... Thats my rule anyways... |

Godmodding A Lesson In Why You Shouldn't Do It: Part 2 Prelude: Welcome back folks! As you remember in our last lesson, we talked about the dangers of auto-hitting; makes for a rather unfun Role-play if done too often. Now, we will discuss another form of godmodding. And that form is… Dodging Everything That Comes Your Way: In one of the first RPs I’ve ever been in, I had the unfortunate luck of experiencing something like this. Sometime during the course of said RP, the characters of two other players got in a fight. What transpired, was dodging, after dodging, after everlasting dodging! Seriously, for the longest time, neither character got a hit in-the other would just keep on dodging. This lasted for several pages and got kind of annoying. I remember sitting there looking at my PSP (this was before I had my laptop, mind you) and thinking ‘Come on people, take some damage!’ The battle never finished. In fact the RP actually got locked eventually. So yes, having an instance where someone dodges every single attack can be rather annoying. Look people, it’s okay to have a character that’s good at avoiding attacks-heck, my main has quite the dexterity herself. However, let at least some attacks hit you so that it’s not godmodding. Okay folks, it’s time for this lesson’s demo. Once again, we bring you ‘Player A’ and ‘Player B’. In this new RP they are in, the characters once again get into a fight. This is what happens;
…And so on. This goes on for pages upon pages upon pages. Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but the fight did last for quite a while. Now, the way to avoid this should be rather obvious; take some hits. Yes, I know you may not want to lose or anything, but be reasonable; is it at all fair to avoid every single attack that comes your way? Not at all. So while you can have characters that are great at avoiding attacks, it’s still a good idea to take some hits. Let’s get back to our players now. After a quick lesson in why one should not dodge every single attack, they go back to their RP;
See this? While Player A dodged some of the bullets, the rest of them hit them. And that’s another thing one could do, with certain kinds of attacks. Elemental abilities and bullets (as shown in our example here) are good moves where you can dodge some of the attack, but get hit by the rest. And this concludes today’s lesson. Tune in next time when we discuss…well, you’ll have to wait and see. ![]() |

Another thing people should keep in mind with fights and hit/evade ratios is that it isn't about winning or losing. The point of an RP is to tell a story, which is something don't keep in mind an awful lot. When it comes to battles especially, people stop thinking about which outcome would; A: Make more sense (the healer might dodge a few attack delivered by the expert swordsman, but let's face it, luck only gets you so far...) B: Make the story more interesting (so the villain defeats you this time, so what? That creates even more conflict between the hero and villain. Why did the villain leave them alive this time though, swaggering away cackling madly? Of, if somehow the hero actually dies from the battle, his team mates are likely to want revenge!) And that's another thing; no-one wants their characters to die, but personally, if the right circumstances came together, hell yes I'd let the bad guys kill off my character! Not only does that establish some consistency (yes, you CAN and WILL die folks, so e on your guard!), but as mentioned before, it moves the plot in new and interesting directions and further reinforces the heroes' resolve to stop the villain. Alternatively, if you're the villain, you can always come back later (MUCH later, mind you), having mysteriously and miraculously survived ("But we stabbed you in the heart and pushed you into an exploding anti-matter reaction generator! You're supposed to be dead!"), because we all know that the best villain in the kind that won't stay down! ![]() Yeah, you could do that with heroes as well (Gandalf the Grey did it), but that's a trick to be used much more sparingly. A hero's death should be a big thing, not just a throwaway "Oh yeah, I've died five times, but it didn't take" plot contrivance. Villains can get away with comebacks because it keeps the heroes in business defending truth, justice and sweet old Granny back home. Anyway, hijack post over with. ;;>_> I got a bit carried away there, me paenitet. A well-written and informative series of works, Blaire; hopefully folks will learn something from this.

Godmodding A Lesson In Why It’s Not Allowed in Forum Role-Playing: Part 3 Prelude: And here we are once again with another lesson on why godmodding is a bad idea. For this lesson, we will focus on what I believe to be the most annoying g-mod technique ever; controlling characters other then one’s own. This one is just like it says; a person, for whatever reason (usually to move the story along), takes control of someone else’s character and treats them as their own. What they do with them depends largely on the situation (and auto-hitting could be categorized as a form of controlling another person’s character), but one thing is clear; it’s annoying. It’s simple folks, if a character in an RP isn’t yours, then you don’t control them. However, there are people that don’t seem to get that, and it’s very unfortunate. But that’s what this tutorial is for! Let’s go back and check on an RP with Player A and Player B. Damn I need to think of better names… Anyway, brief rant aside, let’s get to that RP, shall we?
Okay, notice how Player B took control of Player A’s character? You cannot do that in an RP. I’m sure some of you can think of other explanations, but here’s one reason why you shouldn’t control a character that isn’t yours; because it isn’t yours. Would you like it if someone controlled your character without your expressed permission? I know I wouldn’t. However, you might be saying ‘But Blaire, what if someone in an RP hasn’t posted in it for a long time? Can I take control of their character then?’ No, you may not. Again, that character isn’t yours and using it would be a bad idea. Not to mention it is a bit rude to that character’s creator. So what do you if someone hasn’t posted in an RP for quite a while? Well, you could either wait for them to post again, or you could contact them somehow (such as through a PM system and the like). Either one of those methods are good to attempt, and they can help prevent unnecessary character controlling. My apologies if this lecture is a bit on the short side, but I do hope you learned something from all that. Tune in next time for the fourth lesson! |

All very helpful. Good thing it's Pinned, too. Are there more forms of godmodding than what has already been talked over so far? (Auto-hit, spamming dodge, character control.) |
