The Controversy Over World Cup "Lion Burgers"; AOL News

The controversy over the $21 "lion burger" being offered at Il Vinaio in Mesa, Arizona has reached a fever pitch. The Italian-style restaurant was selling the burgers of lion meat mixed with ground beef as a celebration for the World Cup. But once news got out about the unusual fare the restaurant was besieged with angry emails and protests. The owner said that the lions were raised at a free-range farm in Illinois that is regulated by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and that while lion meat is uncommon it is not illegal (turns out though that it's the FDA not the USDA that inspects lions bred for meat). Later investigations by the Chicago Tribune and other sources found that the source of the meat is Czimer's Game & Sea Foods an Illinois company that specializes in exotic and game meats including bear, camel and yes lion, selling African lion steaks for $19.95 a pound.

Richard Czimer, the company's owner, talked with CNNMoney.com and said that he gets the lion meat from a man who buys and sells animals for the skin and that the meat is essentially a byproduct. Czimer said he doesn't know where the other man gets the lion meat. Czimer doesn't have the best track record. In 2003, Chicago newspapers covered Czimer's conviction for selling meat from federally protected tigers and leopards. He had confessed to buying the carcasses of 16 tigers, four lions, two mountain lions and one liger that were skinned, butchered and sold as "lion meat." The African lion isn't a federally protected endangered species and does qualify as a game meat. Czimer's shop is officially registered with the FDA and has been inspected by state regulators.

Yup... I didn't even know you could farm lions... I didn't even know people ATE lions... Besides, isn't carnivore meat... bad?

When you eat a lion, you're eating every gazelle that lion's been with...

But, anyway. Even as much of an animal lover as I am, I can't go on a rampage and shout "How can they sell lion meat? They're proud majestic animals and they deserve better, those bastards!" Like someone said in the comments, "if it ain't human, it's fair game," even though some peoples out there eat human too... we're not going to get into that.

I think the real controversy is, How the hell do you justify celebrating the World Cup by eating one of the most well-known (animal) symbols of Africa in the first place? That's like celebrating Independence Day by roasting a bald eagle... Sort of.

The second controversy is: "What the hell? I ordered lion meat! I'm definitely tasting tiger with a hint of puma!"

I need Xhibit for this one.

I think the oddest thing about this is that, after a bit of web surfing, I can't find anything on lions traditionally being eaten in Africa, which means this whole burger fiasco (also appearing in Florida restaurants, too) is about as American-born as the fortune cookie. What? Are we bored of the million (read: billions) of cows, chicken, and pigs sent to slaughter? Is alligator, kangaroo, and ostrich not exotic enough, anymore? When is the "I wonder what that tastes like!" gonna end?

Discuss |D.

EDIT: Nevermind, I can rant about lions being eaten. And I will. Quietly. To myself.
EDIT2: If you've heard of lions traditionally or culturally being eaten in Africa, please let me know. Thanks.

While there's nothing ethically wrong with eating lions, it still smacks of that pompous dickishness that everyone expects from us. Like we'll all a bunch of doughy big wigs sitting at a 19x150 table dining on baby harp seal and unicorns.

Ironically. Though I do mostly agree. This isn't going on the global list of good things about Americans.

Guys, why is eating a lion different from eating a cow? They're both animals. Just cause we're not used to the idea of eating lion doesn't automatically make it wrong.

Man, Arizona just keeps on giving lately.

Anyways, as for this controversy, I'm rather apathetic. Indeed, there's no point for this burger and it practically invites protest-- After all, the owner of the restaurant in question is stupidly apathetic to the source of the meat, the meat supplier says his lions are USDA approved when they should be FDS approved, it completely forgoes actual African feasting traditions and is being done for the novelty, lions are cute, majestic, strong, etc., they're a symbol of Africa where the World Cup is taking place, they're not a usual source of food; You could go on about the offensiveness of this whole thing.

But the actual act of eating a lion? Why not? I would only have a problem with this if lions were endangered, or this was proof of a large-scale operation was going on that significantly impacted the species' numbers. But a two-day sale of a farm-bred animal? Eh, let the jerk have it. Heck, I say it's a shame this was made a story; Now more people will be interested in giving this guy their money.

I doubt lion is all that much different tasting... I've had Buffalo and it's just like beef only more lean.

It's not as if buffalo and cow are really all that distant from each other on the family tree. xP

I'm not saying that eating lion is a damnable act, because after all, an animal is an animal, and if we eat one we can eat another. I'm just saying that the reasoning and practice behind it is a bit off. From a personal view, it does seem a bit... excessive, unneeded, even eccentric... Lions have apparently never been a food source for anyone. Why are some starting now?

Compared to farming cows, pork, chicken, alligator, ostrich, and kangaroo, there's not much economic or cultural value to be had, beyond pleasing curiosity. And, you have to wonder about the welfare of the animals. We already have enough controversy with the meat industry, why add another species to the list of those affected? I don't know, it just seems like the negatives outweigh the positives on this one.

I dunno. Yay for those who want to see what lion tastes like. Boo for inventing lion-farming just to satiate some peeps' curiosity. Oh well. *shrug*

^ Guys, what? XD This is so random and I feel bad for laughing. I don't get why they're celebrating the World Cup by eating the lions, though. It's just kinda...out of nowhere.

I honestly think that such sensibilities and conceptions are all bizarre behavior at best. while I was in south korea, I got the chance to eat dog meat, and I own dogs. It wasn't all that uncommon in the past to eat horse meat, either.

Why should it matter about what kind of animal meat we eat, anyway? This is something I've never understood.
