Importing PS3 games

First, a little background before I get to the meat of this topic. For those who don't know, many game systems have regional lockout so that you can't play games from other countries. But the Playstation 3 is an exception. It can play games released outside of your region just fine, without any problems.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone took advantage of the PS3's regionless nature besides me. Myself, I've imported Initial D: Extreme Stage and Wangan Midnight, two street racing games based on animes of the same names. Both cost me a bundle for their age, but I really enjoy having this unique opportunity to play games I wasn't meant to see.

I think I may finally end up trying to learn Japanese, just because of these games. It's not a big deal with Wangan Midnight, because most of the menus are in English, but you will have no idea what the characters are saying in the cutscenes. Ditto to Initial D. Initial D's a little harder to play since its menus are nearly all in Japanese, but there are scans of the Hong Kong English manual out there.

Anyway, what about you guys? You ever imported anything for the PS3? I'm interested in finding more import-worthy titles.

Wow, I didn't realize that the PS3 could do that. Is it all of them that are region free, or is it just recent or older models?

All PS3's are region free, and so are all the PS3 games. Technically, PS3 developers COULD choose to restrict their games to certain regions, but they don't use that functionality. I think it's the fear of consumer backlash, now that it's been established all PS3's can play games from anywhere in the world.

Sadly, everything else (PS1 games, PS2 games, DVDs, and Blu Ray) is still restricted on the system.

I've imported one game from Hong Kong, WipEout HD Fury. It's in both Chinese/English so I just switched to English. I only did that because I wanted it on a disk, the North American version is PSN only.

It greatly helps if you know foreign languages. There are a few European and a lot of Japanese games that aren't in North America.
