THE GAME

Gameplay: Sonic Free Riders is the third installment in the Riders trilogy, an arcade racer in which the player dawns hovering bikes and boards called Extreme Gears. Unlike its prequels or any other Sonic game to date, it eschews controller input and relies completely on body-based motion control:

Steering and speed are controlled by leaning the body and kicking off the ground respectively as if on a skateboard, and jumps are performed as expected and charged by ducking down before reaching the end of a ramp. Holding out your hand instructs the character to do the same which is useful for picking up rings and weapons off to the side; Said weapons can be shot by throwing them at an opponent or onto the playing field. Environmental elements such as bodies of water and mine carts must be overcome and used by unique arm movements.

The maintenance of one's Extreme Gear during play still remain an integral part of the experience; Gears are fueled by air which is consumed at a higher rate when boosting, but it can be replenished during the race by performing tricks or acquiring upgrades; Balancing boosting with skillful play is a necessity for success. There are 20 Gears in all, (see below), each with their own stats, abilities, and upgrades that can be accessed by collecting rings or power-ups in the field.

Modes:

  • Offline:

    • World Grand Prix: Enter the World Grand Prix and challenge yourself to a variety of missions.
    • Free Race: Race with three rules types for one or two players.
    • Tag Race: Team up with another player and race against your rivals in Tag Mode.
    • Relay Race: Team up 2 to 4 players.
    • Time Attack: Race for the best time on each course.
    • Tutorial: Learn how to ride an Extreme Gear.

  • Online:

    • Quick Match: Quickly search and join an available race.
    • Custom Match: Use specific filters to narrow down available races.
    • Create Match: Create and host your own race for others to join.
    • XBOX Live Party: Set up a party to easily connect with 8 other players.

I asked the question because I didn't understand what you wrote. You're talking about some Natal thing but I just don't get you. If you mean there's going to be a third Riders, then just say it.

Natal is a peripheral coming out for the Xbox 360 soon that allows for motion-controlled gameplay. This game is rumored to support Natal, hence why it might be debuting at an upcoming demonstration. That's why I mentioned it.

Overall, along with reporting this rumor, I was also giving my general thoughts about it too; I'm not a member who makes topics with just one sentence and calls it a day.

Anyways, here's a better report: Characters are apparently steered with bodily movements. Items are acquired by reaching out for the screen and thrown by motioning towards a target.

So long as they keep the characters that are playable in the last game playable and I'm down with this.

But your right, it is strange its appearing on XBLA.

This thing...this...Natal, sounds like something that I will get and not have more then just this game to play with it on.

Don't tell me what I can or can't do!

It sounds very....interesting. To be honest, I don't mind motion based games but I've never loved them. I always preferred the game controller way. But this definitely sounds like an interesting title. Since it's for the XBLA, it probably won't be that big of a game. The way it's sounding, it might be drastically different from the first two games just based on the controls. xD I'll definitely need to keep an eye out for this, it's interesting to use Riders to debut a title on this Natal thing. I can't picture what it'll look like at this moment.

...I really hope that this isn't going to be a 360 exclusive. The last game wasn't even ON a Microsoft console. Then again, neither was Final Fantasy...

I just hope they give you the option to play with just a normal controller. Zero Gravity's motion controls were horrible.

Well, the sideways controls were okay, but the forward position... Oh my god...

I think i might like this, I loved Sonic Riders and SR:ZG
As long as they have all the same players as last time (as well as some new ones) I am fine with this.

Gods I hope so too.

I mean yeah you could play with a gamecube controller for ZG(Though I stuck to the wii mote since I found it more fun)

Ugh, another iteration of Sonic Riders? Hopefully those DREADFUL Babylon Rogues don't return. XD

Motion control with that Natal, however, is intriguing. If they pull it off well, I may just change my mind about it. =P

Continuing Riders is a waste of time (no offense), especially when it's a third in a mediocre series. Give us a real game, Sonic Team.

Mario Kart owns Sonic Riders. Always will.

I like Riders and you really can't compare it with Mario Kart, a kart-racing series, to Riders, a skateboarding-esque series. Anyway, I think it's even less than a third, though;

1) Main Games
2) Handheld Series(excluding Colors)
3) Riders
4) Storybook
5) Olympic Games

So yeah, it's about fifth in a somewhat mediocre series, lol.
