THE GAME

Gameplay: Sonic Colors is the latest action title in the franchise that sees Sonic racing around Dr. Eggman's planetary themeparks to rescue an alien species called Wisps which is being used to power the parks. In return for rescue, these Wisps will allow Sonic to be privy to their special abilities, or "Color Powers."

The Wii version of Colors accurately replicates the more traditional Daytime stages of Sonic Unleashed on the Xbox 360, whilst the DS version will be replicating the Sonic Rush series. Traversing the levels is given a layer of depth in the form of the Wisps who act as a general power-up system, allowing Sonic to move, attack, and explore the scenery in various ways. Completing the main campaign is still as independent of this system as possible, and only by aiming for full completion will significant use of the Wisps be necessary.

Sonic Team purports a solid focus on the series' strengths. This includes the cultivation of a single style of gameplay and whimsical locations that take cues from park attractions like confectionery centers and tropical resorts; The storyline will also follow a similarly light-hearted and goofy tone, and music will replace the series' standard guitar riffs for more upbeat, jazzy sounds.

Locations:
Characters:

Wisps: Wisps are found inside of regenerative capsules throughout each level. Collecting a particular color of Wisp allows Sonic to take advantage of that alien's "Color Power," unique attacks and movements that are limited by a gauge. There are ten Wisps across both versions:

  • White Wisp: The default Wisp; Collecting these gives Sonic the ability to boost forward.
  • Cyan Laser: These Wisps turn Sonic into a laser, bouncing him around at blinding speeds and destroying anything he touches. Hitting special crystals and antennae also allow Sonic to teleport to another part of the level.
  • Yellow Drill: Yellow Drills allow Sonic to burrow underground to search for items, reach alternate routes, and bypass obstacles.
  • Orange Rocket: This Wisp seems self-explanatory: It lets Sonic blast off through the air to reach high areas that are otherwise unobtainable.
  • Red Burst: Gathering enough of these Wisps turns Sonic into a destructive fireball that can also perform short boosts into the air. (DS Exclusive)
  • Pink Spike: This Wisp increases the strength, number, and power of Sonic's spines, allowing him to roll on virtually any surface. (Wii Exclusive)
  • Green Hover: Freeing this Wisp allows Sonic to hover and dash through the air, as well as use the Light Speed Dash and follow a trail of rings. (Wii Exclusive)
  • Blue Cube: The Blue Cube allows Sonic to switch special blue rings to blue platforms and vise versa, opening up paths. Blue Cube also allows him to perform a slam that will destroy all nearby enemies. (Wii Exclusive)
  • Purple Frenzy: This Wisp turns Sonic into a berserker that eats everything in its path, growing bigger with each item eaten. (Wii Exclusive)
  • Violet Void: This Wisp acts like a black hole. Like its Wii counterpart, it also grows bigger with each item taken in. (DS Exclusive)

Storyline: "The diabolical Dr. Eggman has hatched another plan for world domination! He has built an amazing interstellar amusement park, floating in space around Sonic's home planet, bursting with incredible rides and attractions. However, all is not as it seems as Dr. Eggman has abducted an alien race called Wisps and is harnessing their colorful energy to fuel a sinister plot. However, before Dr. Eggman completes his evil plans, Sonic discovers his mysterious theme park in space. When he arrives, Sonic finds he is also able to use these alien powers and is ready to help! Sonic will need all his speed and skill as he faces this test, but, empowered by the alien energy, it's a test he'll pass with flying colors!" --Sega Mini Site

Metacritic Score:

Wii: 7.7/10

Worth Playing
Nov 23 2010

Sonic Colors is a fantastic game. Its greatest achievement is that one does not have to be a super-tolerant dyed-in-the-wool Sonic super fan to enjoy it or to forgive a laundry list of flaws.

Gamer Limit
Nov 26 2010

Colors is a definite improvement on Sonic Unleashed. By no means is Colors the 3D Sonic you've been waiting for, but if you can get through all the frustration, there is a lot of fun to be had in this package.

Destructoid
Nov 13 2010
Sonic Colors feels like a step right back into the same crap this series has drowned in for the past decade. If I had to pick a color for this game, it would be brown, for very obvious reasons.

DS: 7.9/10

Telegraph
Nov 18 2010
Sonic Colours is truly a highlight of this year's DS releases, and a much-demanded return to form for Sonic. The quick-fire nature means it's perfect for its hand-held platform, and if you're only going to pick up one Sonic title this year, Sonic Colours DS is definitely your best bet.

Meristation
Nov 22 2010
Sonic Colours on Nintendo DS is as good as its big brother on Wii. It's a fun, speedy and charming adventure, with many things to do and great boss fights. The Wisps are the greatest adition to the franchise to date, as the powers they grant Sonic make all the gameplay even more addictive and unforgettable.

D+PAD Magazine
Nov 19 2010
Fans will still find a few surprises this time around, including a form of multiplayer support available from a single DS card, but it's in the colour-based wisp abilities that the game tries to stand out from the crowd.

Note: Current consensus may not be entirely comprehensive.

ADMINISTRATIVE NOTE

While the topic hasn't taken a turn for the worse, I still want to nip this in the bud-- This is a modern Wii/DS Sonic title based around themes of color and amusement parks. Someone is going to dislike it. You don't need to bring this up every other day as if disliking a Sonic game is a crime. Similarly, you don't need to cry that Sega is wrong for making this game and post Sonic Cycles because it doesn't fulfill one of your irrelevant bullet points pertaining to the perfect Sonic game. No one cares.

Thus, keep complaining about the complainers and Sega to an absolute zero. This topic is about Sonic Colors, not about the near decade-old controversy over the state of the franchise and fanbase that I'm too old to give a shit about anymore. If you want to complain about any of that crap, make a topic or blog entry for it. Any such posts that fall within this realm here will be deleted/edited on sight.

I too went "Awww" lol Well this looks pretty interesting. Its kinda like the game where Sonic had to save all the Flickies,Sonic 3-D Blast? Well it reminded me a bit of it. But just from that trailer ill be looking foward to this game :D
The Wisps reminded me a bit of the Three Lake Sisters from Pokemon but no complaints. Their adorable!

Now that I can gather my thoughts better, what this is sounding like from that horrifically-worded press release is that Sega is combining Galaxy with the daytime levels and splashing it all with a healthy dosage of Lisa Frank. A highly amusing premise, no doubt. And I admit, the world in the teaser certainly looks creative and fun too, but I need to see more.

I sorta just hope that Sonic and Tails aren't the only ones from the real cast in this game. It sounds interesting enough, the trailer wasn't very informative, but I guess that was the point. I hope it's not too much like galaxy, but the landscape looks like a good one. Looking forward to more info.

A sci-fi themes amusement park, eh? Sounds interesting.

A unique playground has been seen orbiting the planet of Sonic the Hedgehog. Some rumors speak of an alien race called wisps, with a rare colored energy, which is now imprisoned here, by the evil Dr. Eggman. Sonic, once arrived on the planet's entertainment, you can use immediately made aware of this rare power to help colored wisps in the escape! The Wii version of Sonic Colours combines both 2D and 3D gaming perspective, while the Nintendo DS version takes advantage of the characteristics of the double-screen console.

You mean like in Sonic Unleashed? If so... Yes....Yes....YES!

"The lively alien universe of Sonic Colours allows players to race at breakneck speed along amazing planets, each with its peculiarities and unique visual style."

...Someone is gonna say; 'OMGZ! SUPER MARIO GALAXY RIP-OFF!!!'

Even though we don't know exactly how the planet-hopping this is going to work....>_> I do so hope people are going wait until we know more before making shoddy accusitions.

(Yeah, like the fans are going to listen to that logic. *rolls eyes* )

Anyway, this sounds a lot more like Unleashed, as opposed (which is good), only with alien power-up things in place of the Werehog and planets instead continents. At least that's how I figure. I need to see more.

In addition to classic Sonic gameplay, new power-wisps, they offer an innovative way to explore these new worlds and help Sonic to run faster than ever!

...I do hope 'faster then ever' does not mean it's easier for Sonic to run into walls. ;)

It looks like Sega has officially canned the idea of a good Adventure game. No more exploring? Enter the trial and error saga.

And I did not like Mario Galaxy. In all honesty, this does look a bit better than it. At least it brings back the idea of saving things (flickies, chao, etc). I hope this game throws a landslide on SMG. However, it looks way too kid-friendly though. Reminded me of the teletubbies for some reason (the aliens anyway).

I'll probably enjoy this one though. Not sure how much I like the idea of aliens giving Sonic powers, but it's much more bearable than the werehog. It might have some Adventure elements. The idea of all-out speed is not my favorite, but if the werehog isn't in it, and it features more characters, then it's already a step forward.

The story seems a lot more structured. I'm just concerned how much Adventure elements are included in this game compared to speed elements.

No, there's no point in saying anything.

I changed my mind;

Ahem...

How do we know it's not like the Adventure games? How do we know there's no exploration?

Here's the answer; We don't.

We don't know how much it's like Galaxy-hell, the planet hoping thing could be the only similarity, we don't know how much it is or isn't like the Adventure series, we don't know if there's no exploration (since there was no gameplay footage in that video.... -_- ).

Gah.....*shakes head*

This is a Wii/DS game with "Colors" in the title, and you expected some return to form? =/

It's just my guess after seeing how fast the video is and after seeing Sonic Team mess up after all these years. The way the game is described makes the gameplay sound exactly like Unleashed.

Although, the game looks better than Unleashed (I edited my post by the way, I didn't want to be that critical). The fact that there is a story developed that does not concern a werehog already puts this game over the edge.

And I can guarantee it's better than that Super Mario Galaxy repetitive stuff I've seen, and probably better than the second one coming out (Unleashed was better than SMG, and I am critical towards that game).

I'm actually gearing towards this being an okay game after reconsidering. I don't know if it would deserve the likes of some award, but it looks decent. The one thing that could pull this game down is the integration of the Wiimote (I dislike using that thing).

Indeed, rather than joning on Sega for not releasing Adventure 3, let's focus on Sonic Colors instead. I really don't want this to turn into the Sonic 4 thread, which I'm still planning on cleaning out. <<;;

Anyways, people are getting the Galaxy vibe is because it's mentioned directly in the press release that Sonic will be travelling to multiple theme-park planets. Considering the success of Galaxy, which came out three years ago, which is about the usual development time for a Sonic game, the timing for this gimmick seems like more than a coincidence. Regardless, I don't see it as a bad thing; Galaxy and its sequel are highly rated for a reason.

However, I'm wondering just exactly how Tails fits into the picture. He's seen in the teaser and screens, but mentioned nowhere in the press release. Mayhaps he's simply a support character again this time around?

Actually, after I watched the video a second time, Tails outstretched his arm and then the aliens appeared. Could this mean that Tails is the one who has the relationship to the aliens?

EDIT: Disregard what I just said, Tails didn't do that.

I will admit though, the one thing I'm not liking is the name. I mean, 'Sonic Colors'? Yeah, people are going to point out apparent 'kiddiness' from the title alone....
