Loopy's Review Workshop – Red Alert 3

Red Alert 3

Posted Image
Developer: EA Los Angeles
Genre: RTS
Release Date: October 28, 2008
Number of Players: Multiplayer Online, Co-op.
Platforms: Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Mac OS

Game Summary – Well its Red Alerts turn to have another go at the RTS world, as the cousin to Command and Conquer this more insane version or C&C just got loads more crazy. This fast pasted relentless strategy is loads of fun, with cool CGC scenes in the single player missions. And enough staying power in multi player to keep you going for months to come, with plenty of different maps form the other players around.

Storyline – Well Red Alert has done it again making another weird and whacky story that dares to defy logic. Seems the Russians have don’t it again, on the verge of being beaten by the allies they pull a trump card out of there hat. Using there new time machine they go back in time and assassinate Albert Einstein, this denied the world access to nuclear weapons as Albert didn’t make then, and stopped the Allies technological advancement that won them the war. Upon coming back well the good news was, the Soviet Empire still stands and there are no more nuclear weapons. But as any Sci Fi fan will tell you messing with time normally leaves you worse of them you started, the Allies are still around with there own advanced technology. And the newest threat on the block is futuristic Japan, with there new nano technology giving there units such diversity. Well the earth doesn’t seem much better off then where it started before the time travel, so now we got 3 factions battling it out for control of the world. Most of the story is told through very nicely done CGC scenes, and in game mission logs which adds a great effect for the storyline. The story is goofy and silly but it works, stop trying to be series and just sit back and enjoy it.

Design – This game introduces loads of new units into the crazy mix, all with there own secondary features. With 3 teams all with heaps of different units, each with secondary abilities it can become hard sometimes to keep track of what’s happening as the fast game play really takes it toll on those who cant multi task. There is no denying the sheer diversity that all the new units, buildings and factions is nothing but a huge plus. The 27 new missions for you to complete 9 for each faction tells the story from all 3 points of view, and the new addition added to the campaign mode is coop play. Which allows you and a friend to do each and every mission as a team, or at the worst case situation an AI which isn’t to bad. So all I got to say is WOW I cant wait to join in the carnage and mayhem all this verity will bring.

Game Play – The game play has had some changes added to it, but in my view nothing that makes it stand out from older titles in the series. The best new feature is now water, as playing on top of water now plays a huge roll in Red Alert 3. Being able to build whole bases on the water and wage war on and of the water with all new units, that can come right up the beach and take the fight strait to your opponents. Other new units have multiple modes like the Japanese VX being an Anti air unit on the ground, and changing to a helicopter for a air to ground missile launcher unit. But the recourse collection has taken a huge step backwards, with your collection of Ore restricted only to little mines of ore on the map that you put a refinery in front of. This is kind of the kitchen sink approach as what’s the point of having a little truck going 2cm back and forth to collect ore. There is nothing new here in the game play really that hasn’t already been tried in past RTS games.

Presentation – Red Alert 3 on PC look great, with the CGC scenes really making a stand out, they are done using cheap dialog and sets but who cares, its some of the best storyline I have seen in a C&C game to date or any RTS game for that matter. The music is also done real nicely and the sound effects isn’t your normal repetitive stuff you see in a lot of games. I mean I tried out 1 unit it has about 4 to 5 different responses to each order, I’m talking 4 to 5 for move commands, attack commands, guard commands and a string load of other things they just say. And that’s for all the units in the game, with the game not lagging out at all even in the most intense battle scenes. Red Alert 3 stands out as one of the latest looking and sounding games to date.

Final Notes – If your looking for a fast pasted crazy action RTS to play, then jump on board and join in the mayhem. This game has no learning curve with the games tutorial missions showing you everything you ever need to know. But as my final note I would simply say this about Red Alert 3, if you like RTS games buy this 1 as its loads of fun to play a completely stupid storyline and take it seriously..

Score
Storyline – 9.2
Design – 8.9
Game Play – 7.5
Presentation - 10

Final Score – 8.9

Ohai, another RA3 player. I've been playing C&C since around 2002. Got all of the C&C games except for that abomination called Tiberian Twilight. Good review after the edit.
