Don't close your eyes, don't give into the fright
Twigs snapped under my feet. Bullets rang out in the pitch black darkness, whizzing by, some almost grazing my arm. It was the same scene every time. I ducked low, clutching the laser pistol to my chest and huddling down low. I knew what would happen next. I turned to run, but when I got up, a bullet lodged into my temple, and I died. I woke from the dream drenched in sweat. I sat up and looked around whimpering. It was the same one every time, and every time it never failed to scare the daylights out of me. I sighed and kicked off the sheets rubbing my wet arms and legs. I wasn’t surprised to find two new bruises. I got more and more every night. I also noticed that no matter what time I went to bed and no matter what time I woke up, I always didn’t get enough sleep, and my legs felt tired like I had gone through military training.

“Hm..” I muttered. “Ah well...back to sleep.” I said, I closed my eyes and fell asleep. In the morning I woke up with the same usual drained feeling, all my life I had felt it, I knew no other rest. I got dressed and headed off to school. The usual day, usual classes, usual drama and usual weirdness. Nothing seems different when your life is full of weirdness and change. One thing I didn’t get though was the dream. I had researched articles about reoccurring dreams and stuff but I never found anything that explained any physical draining. I also started to find myself saluting to random people I never knew I could have respect for, like I knew someone like them and had made a habit of it. It was all very strange. I woke one particular morning, this morning, with an ache in my stomach like I had gone through a boot camp session and found red lines over my wrists. In the dream I had seriously disobeyed someone. I sighed and dressed, brushing my teeth and getting ready for the day like usual. I went downstairs to get breakfast. “And she lives!”

someone said. I looked over at my cousin Rick. “Huh?” I asked. “We’ve been waiting for hours to go on that hiking trail, remember?” He asked me. He was tall with shaggy blonde hair, he wore an orange shirt with a surfer on it and tan shorts. He usually wore flip-flops but today he had on hiking boots. “Oh yeah!” I exclaimed. My other cousin named Ivan handed me a plate filled with eggs, toast and bacon, then handed me a cup of coffee. I looked at him and smiled, saying a thank you, then wolfed it down. Ivan was different than Rick. Rick was light and happy and hyper and outgoing. Ivan was serious, thoughtful, deep and a loner. He had shaggy black hair that went over his eye, he liked to dye the very tips of his bangs red as well as the strip of hair that went down the side of his face. He usually wore a black tank top with his jacket off, today he had on a black hooded jacket as well. He wore jeans, he preferred them to have holes at the knees, and two stud belts that crossed. He also had black tiger strip tattoos at various places on his arms and legs. The two were so different but yet they were best friends. They were an even match for wrestling an running.

Rick was the better climber and Ivan was the better swimmer. Ivan liked writing though, and Rick liked sports. He wasn’t what people call a jock, he just liked anything outside and active. I decided that while we were on the trail today I would tell them about the strange dreams. All of my female cousins were girly except for Myra, she was two. But she couldn’t go along. So it was just the oldest, me Rick and Ivan. Once I ate I packed up real quick, and packed some extra things, we might stay overnight. I was sixteen years old, Rick was seventeen and Ivan was eighteen. He was considered an adult, even though he never acted like it when he was around Rick. Sure he was serious and serene but he could become a little kid at any time.

That’s what Rick said anyways, I had never seen it for myself. “Alright let’s light out.” Ivan said. I turned and waved to my dad. “See you later dad!” I called. My mom was on a business trip. I let Ivan go in front, then followed him. Rick took up the back. We hiked out of the house and to the mountains. The house I lived in was a log cabin in the woods, we were visiting family. They lived next to a mountain trail. I had been wanting to go for years, Ivan finally decided I was old enough. As we hiked the sun started to sink, I had woken up around 12:00 by the time we got out it was 2:00. It had been a while since then.

We checked in and then got on the trail. I was excited, what kind of things would we see? We hiked for the rest of that day, stopping every now and then for rest. We ended up camping out in a shelter they had put up for hikers. I curled up into a ball, hugging my knees, and stared into the fire. Rick took a flashlight and shone it under his chin. “MUAHAHAHAHA!!” He said, like an evil laugh. Thing is, he popped up out of nowhere and made me scream and fall backwards. Ivan smirked while Rick collapsed in a fit of laughter. I smirked a bit and pounced on him, pulling his hair and punching him in the abs. He pinned me down and got a loogie in his mouth, he let it seep down, coming at my face. “AGH! NOO!” I yelled out, he had done that before, it was gross. Ivan laughed a bit and let Rick torture me for a while before kicking him off. I giggled and then curled up again, Rick started telling a ghost story. He was very good at it and by the time he finished I was huddled against Ivan, too scared to even open my eyes.

“What’s wrong? The boogie monster get you!?” Ivan asked, he started making growling noises. I yelped and backed up, opening my eyes and shaking my head. “OK..I think we scared her enough…if she doesn’t get some sleep we won’t be able to hike.” Rick said. Ivan laughed and nodded. “Alright…hey…why are there bruises all over your arms and legs?” He asked me. “Um…nothing..” I said. “No ones messing with you at school are they!?” Ivan asked, balling up his fist and punching the open palm of his other hand, growling. He was the only who could growl, it was weird.

“No! No ones doing anything. I wake up with them.” I said, sitting down on my sleeping bag. “How?” Rick asked. I shrugged. “I don’t know, I have this same kind of dream every night that I’m in some type of army, I always get shot but it doesn’t feel like a bullet, it feels like a doctors shot, and when I wake up I have new bruises and cuts and scrapes like I had in the dream.” I said. “I’ve never seen you sleepwalk before.” Ivan commented. “Yeah… I know…I just go to sleep, and in the morning it feels like I’ve been running all night.” I said. Both of my cousins were silent. “Well…we’ll see if you sleepwalk or something tonight.” Ivan said.

I nodded and huddled under the sleeping back, curled up in a ball between my cousins in their own sleeping bags. When I fell asleep they were both still awake, sharing stories and memories and talking about what we were going to do tomorrow. I had the same dream that night. I woke up screaming like usual and drenched in sweat. Ivan shot out of bed and grabbed a crowbar he had laid by him before he fell asleep and looked around, slightly crouched and ready to hit something. Rick shot up and looked around quickly, he was the first to realize what had happened. He hugged me and told Ivan to put the crowbar down, that I just had a bad dream. “It was the same one..” I said. I felt down my arms and legs.

“Whoa, you’ve got a big scrape on your cheek! Where did that come from?” He asked. I felt my cheek and cringed slightly. “In my dream I fell.” I explained. “Well. You definitely didn’t sleepwalk, we would have felt you get up.” He said. I nodded, “I know.” I said. “Well…go back to sleep, here try sharing a sleeping bag with me, we might have been in too deep of sleep. If you have the dream again and you sleepwalk, I’ll feel you and wake up.” He said. So I slept next him in the same sleeping bag. I woke up screaming again in the morning with a cut on my forehead. “Wow that’s weird.” Ivan commented, wiping my forehead down and bandaging it up. I nodded, “It’s happened my whole life.” I explained.

“Did you wake up with the broken ribs that one time?” He asked me. I nodded again, “I don’t know where I got broken ribs at or how I didn’t wake up from it, I only wake up after I get shot, either with a bullet or a doctors shot, but they both feel like a doctors shot.” I said. Ivan’s eyebrows pressed together in a look of concentration and confusion. “I don’t know little sister, I don’t know.” He said. Little sister was my nickname since both him and Rick were like my brothers. We were all close enough to be siblings that’s for sure. We packed up, I changed back into normal clothes, and we set off again. While we walked we saw more than one bear, a snake, and a lot of birds. The snake was the scariest. It was a long rattlesnake, looked like a couple feet long. It came up and I froze, Ivan had to grab it up real quick and throw it away before it bit me. Rick didn’t see it until Ivan picked it up and threw it.

As we hiked I started up a song. “I told the witch doctor I was in love with you!” I started singing. Ivan smirked, “Dun dun dun dun.” He said in a low voice. Rick sang the next line. “I told the witch doctor I was in love with you.” Ivan went next. “And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do, he told me-” we all sang now. “Ooo ee oo ah ah ting tang walla walla bing bang! “ we kept singing while we hiked. We came to a waterfall and rested there for a bit, eating sandwiches we had brought. I stuck my feet in the water and splashed in it a bit. I saw the reflection of one of the people in my dream. I stopped and stared into the water as the face slowly took shape until the water stilled. The bony face took structure, thick eyebrows, sharp chin, wolf-like muzzle jutting out.

The mans body was covered in scales that were dark turquoise. He had a lizard-like tail that ended in a sharp boney point. His arms were long and strong with wicked claws at the end, and his legs were like volociraptor’s. I looked at him through the reflection and I fell in, either the creature pushed me or I fell in on my own accord, but I was in the water. By the time I got back out of the water the reflection was gone, there were however, two large footmarks with claws. I sighed a bit. -Am I crazy or something?- I wondered. Ivan and Rick ran over and helped me up.

‘What are you doing!!? Don’t you know there are water moccasins in there?!” Ivan scolded. I stared at my feet and mumbled an “I’m sorry”. After I dried up we started hiking again, we ended up coming to a cave a few hours later. “Can we please stop here?” I asked them. “I’m tired.” I said. They both looked at each other and shrugged then set their stuff down. I put my own things down, grateful for the break, and sat down on a rock. “Amelia! Don’t sit on tha-” The rock I was on broke under my weight due to how thin it was, when that happened a chain of events set off, rock after rock fell and the cave started collapsing. I got up and tried running out of the cave but rocks blocked my way, I curled up into a bal on the ground and waited until it ceased, I was lucky I wasn’t crushed.

“RICK! IVAN!” I yelled, trying to find an air hole, I found a place just big enough for me to see out, they were right on the other side. “AMELIA!” They yelled. “Yeah!?” I yelled back. “These caves have other openings! This rock wall is too thick to move without causing another cave in that could kill you! Go and try to find an opening! There should be one a few miles up! We’ll go around and try to find a way in!” Ivan said. I nodded. “Ok…’ I said. I shuddered, scared, at least I could still talk to them right? I started walking and went into the dark cave, I had a flashlight on me. I turned it on and kept walking. I was tired, too tired. I noticed that there wasn’t much air here.

“Great…” I muttered. I kept walking around the immense cave until I came to a cavern, little air was allowed in here through the rock, I wouldn’t last long if I didn’t find a way out soon. After a couple minutes I fell, lost my footing and slipped, into a deeper part of the cave. Something snapped and it felt like my leg broke. I screamed and held it, slowly time ticked by, I became drowsy, I tried to remember that if I fell asleep then I would die, there wasn’t enough air to support me through sleep. I struggled to keep myself awake and alert, looking for a way to climb out. Finally I became to drowsy to keep my eyes open and fell asleep.

I had another dream, only this time it took place in the cave, in the dream the creature came again. He looked down at me and slowly climbed down, I looked up at him and saluted then issued a series of clicks that meant, “Sir, I have fallen and broken my leg, could you please help me so that I may return back to duty?“ He clicked back something that I didn’t quite catch and nodded. Then set my leg for me, bandaging it up with this weird kind of plaster, kind of like cast plaster. The creature told me how to get out of the cave, it spoke in clicks and squeaks, but somehow I understood it. I nodded and then he took out a shot and put it into my arm. I yelped and then woke up, not remembering much of the weird dream, or that I had spoken in clicks and squeaks to it. I looked down at my leg and it was fixed in the same thing it had been in the dream.

I sighed, would this weirdness ever stop? I got up and limped my way towards where I was given directions too. I felt along the wall subconsciously remembering the directions. After a while I heard scuttling, every few minutes I heard something scuttling, like a dogs claws across a tile floor. I looked around but I couldn’t see anything. Again and again it happened, always behind me then suddenly stopping before I could turn to look at where it went. After a while I just ignored it. In the deep recesses of the cave it started sounding like someone were talking. The squeaks and clicks that I heard in my dreams, were all around. Something loud crashed and a shriek occurred. I yelped out and looked around, I ran to where the shriek had come from and found one of those creatures trapped under a rock.

It was struggling to get free and I didn’t think, just reacted. I grabbed up a leverage and hoisted the rock off of it. This one looked different., it was slimmer than the last one, and it had curves in it’s body like a human girls waist and breast line. It’s scales were a deep purple and its tail was thin and slim but was very strong. It squeaked and clicked then started towards me and grabbed me gently but too strong for me to break out of the hold, the next thing I knew I felt the shot again and I passed out, when I woke up I was by one of the openings Ivan was talking about. I got up and heard them calling. “AMELIA!?” Over and over. I ran out and jumped on Ivan’s back hugging him. “OHMYGOSH!” Rick yelled, he jerked me off from Ivan’s back and squished me in a bear hug, our tears of happiness conjoining. Ivan joined in and I almost literally couldn’t breathe. I didn’t care though, I was so happy to see them,

“I thought I was going to die in that cave.” I sobbed. “We thought you died already.” Rick said, squishing me tighter. When they finally did let me down about half an hour later Ivan said, “You are not going five feet from us!” like he was mad, but I could see that he had just been worried. I nodded and said a quiet “yes sir” and then got squashed again. “What happened to your leg?” Ivan asked. “I broke it…” I answered. Rick and him were both very concerned now. “How!? What happened?!” They both asked at the same time. I sighed and told them about falling, and about the dream and the creature, I left out the part about the girl creature though, I couldn’t explain that I had been awake and still seen her.

They both stared at me, Rick’s jaw dropping in amazement ad Ivan looking almost the same without the open flytrap Rick had. When I finished they both just stared at me for a second. “Wow little sister…..just…wow.” Rick managed. I nodded a bit. “So now where too?” I asked. “You can’t walk! Your legs broke!” They said. “Oh yeah..” I muttered, then collapsed. Ivan put me on his back and made the long hike back home like that, I was passed back and forth from Rick to Ivan to be carried. I kept protesting but they just got madder and madder at me for wanting to walk so I shut up and let them hand me around like a hiking backpack. When one of them wasn’t carrying me, the other had my stuff.

When we got back home I was immediately rushed to the hospital. I was glad it was a clean break. It wouldn’t take as long as I had feared to heal. When I was back home I slept often, sometimes I didn’t have the dreams anymore. Sometimes when I did have them the creatures would ask me how my leg was coming along and then go away after giving me medicine to speed up the healing process. My leg healed 10 times faster than it was supposed to.

Bye the time I could finally run again a lot had happened. The dreams had become more frequent as I had gotten better and I had gone through therapy in my dreams. I always referred to the creature that talked to me as “sir” or “Serge” or something of that matter. Like he was a military leader or something He introduced me to a creature named James. He had deep black scales that were glossy, his tail ended in a spike and his claws and eyes were red. He had hair that went over his eye, serge had hair too but he cropped it in an army style.

Lately while I was awake I was getting weird glances from people. Apparently someone outside of my circle of friends had heard about it and a rumor started. Normally I didn’t care about rumors. But when I knew it was true, I cared. At lunch, no one would sit next to me except for my best friends JC, Mellissa, Julie, Jack, and Ivan. I ate slowly and didn’t look up, because whenever I did, people would hush because they were talking about me. “Don’t worry…we believe you…” Mellissa said. Everyone nodded in response causing me to smile a bit.

The dreams got stronger and stronger as I came to realize what I was doing in the dreams. I had one thing that I noticed though, each night I woke up stronger than the night before, meaning I knew how to fight better or I could run farther or something like that. Freshman Friday was next year, my friends and I actually tried making tactical plans, it was pretty funny.

It was a normal summer, throughout it I got together with every one of my friends, and the dreams stopped coming for a while after the Serge told me that I was going to be able and take a break now that it was summer, after the school year started again though, in the dream there was a boot camp and man was I out of practice.

As I fell asleep and slipped into the dream, the fog that clouded every dream cleared and I looked around a field. There were obstacles of all kinds. I looked to my right and saw James, I looked behind us and saw the Serge, I immediately turned around to face him, James turned around to. “Today you will get back into your training, school is coming again in the waking world, and now you must get back into the loop of things.” He barked. As usual I saluted and shouted ‘yes sir’ back, he looked at me weirdly, then a smile unwillingly crept over his reptilian features. “I thought you would have forgotten by now.” He commented, I smiled a bit and shook my head with a mumbled ‘no sir’.

“The object…in this game. Is to face each other in a race to find, and protect, an item of choice that I’ve hidden. I will not tell you what this item is, or what it looks like. I will only tell you that It is small, hard to find, and you will know it when you see it. The rules are, no blood, no broken bones, and no casualties of any sorts except for a few bruises. This test was designed to see if you two can face each other. You never know what might happen, until now I have made you two partners on purpose, after training you two shall be in a unit.”

We both said “Yes sir.” and waited, he instructed us to turn back around and get ready to run. James and I cast a glance of apology at each other before the whistle blew. I ran and dived under and over obstacles. James tripped me several times, but each and every time I’d just get up and keep running and find a way to pass him. Serge hadn’t told us not to trip, and he hadn’t told us to trip. He said the only objective was to get whatever the item is and look for it, then it hit me. “He never told us what to do with it once we found it.” I muttered, I then guessed just to bring it too him.

When I looked back around to where I was going I ran into the back of James and we both fell. He had stopped short because there was a pit with many obstacles, each one covered in spikes. As we fell I remembered looking down at the pit, then just moved, I grabbed onto James’s clawed hand and pulled him to a bar on the top of the pit. I then swung my self up on top of it and tried to balance while helping James up.

It wasn’t below Serge to put death traps in our training runs, we would never die, just be injured severely, he thought it helped. I didn’t get the point. We both balanced and walked our way across the bar and sat down after we were clear of the pit. When I looked at him James had a toothy grin, casing me to laugh. I got back up and got him up, then on three we began running again, I faked like I would trip him, but I never did. And I only tripped over my own shoelaces.

I woke up after we saw Serge, he was standing in the middle of the field, clapping. “Well done…you two were remarkable. There was no item, I wanted to see if you could work with someone that is your opponent, and you did. It’s a leadership skill, that you don’t know exactly what it is or what it’s needed for but it’s there. Good job.” With that I nodded and he took a shot out, I injected myself and woke up.
