What is the difference between a duck?

Friends have just recently gotten me into the Monster Hunter series and I gotta say, for a handheld game, Freedom Unite is extremely playable and looks pretty damn nice for a PSP game. Combining that with Xlink Kai online ad-hocing, this game is a really fun game to play with all my friends, both near and far. Granted, I don't know much but I can tell the series has a nice legacy going for it and is well-respected. Then I heard Monster Hunter Frontier was jumping to Xbox 360 in Japan which almost screams "it's FINALLY coming to the US in a year or 2" after being out in the Asian countries (minus china) for quite some time now. Beyond that we have Monster Hunter 3 Tri coming to the Wii, and it seems to push the system to it's graphical limit... if it parties just as well as the PSP version, this could be quite a juggernaut title for the Wii. Too bad I sold the system but it took to long from Brawl till this announcement for me to even know or care at the time. Least I still don't regret the decision even if it is a little irritating now. Anyway, I'd like to dedicate this thread to all things Monster Hunter, and to see if there are any other people here outside of me and Ereki who know of/enjoy/play the game. Interesting fact about Monster Hunter Tri, In japan they have to pay a subscription fee to use the online features of the game, but in the US and Europe, it will be free. |

The Monster Hunter series is awesome, it has to be one of the best executed handheld series on the market. My one nit-pick wth the series is only the most major one: This series hates noobs. If you just walk in and expect to do okay, you're screwed. In most instances you WILL need at least one teammate to watch your back, but that adds to the awesome if you actually have a friend to hunt with. Plus it is really freaking hard to get good equipment, which is required to kill the monsters that give the parts needed to make said equipment in the first place. (I, however, have found Action Replay to be a most helpful tool in Freedom Unite. Divine Dual Power Saws Demonized Auto-Combo at four times speed! O.O) |

For some reason the handheld versions fared far better than the console versions. When it came to PSP, it exploded in popularity and is still the most popular versions. A new version is being released for PSP also. |

I already have Tri preordered. And I've got a buddy who is willing to play with me. Also there are a couple key differences between the Japanese version and the American (not sure about Europe...) versions. First it will use the Wii Speak Peripheral. and Second if you buy the more expensive version you get the Wii Classic Controller Pro. |

Freedom unite is an awesome game. I had it for my PSP and got to a rank 6 hunter. Pretty sweet. I love the weapon and armor selection, but fighting the large monsters like the Shen Goaren and the Emperor Lao Shan is going to take a lot of work. Still fun though. |

Lao Shan!? He's really not all that bad, he's got to be the one monster in the game that kills you by accident. xD TBH the only monster I've had a hard time soloing so far was the Khezu, for it's annoying shocky attacks, the rest of the monsters have gone fairly easilly so far and I can double team the Rathian and Rathalos (and Lao Shan) with one of my friends who's around a ton. I usually can't get a 4 person group together unless I'm using Xlink Kai though. I wanna fight the Gravios. :3 @Neo- I can't necessarily explain why, but bringing the online functionality to the handhelds had to be really attractive, and beyond that.. it is easilly the most playable handheld game I've ever seen in terms of difficulty and length. Playtime is usually a weakness of handheld games while Capcom's formula negates that weakness. It's awesome. And I agree that this series can be BRUTAL on people that don't know what they're doing, I've watched people get killed by the Bullfango for example. That is sad. |

Meh, I've been playing the series since it was first released for the PSP. My problem is the aqcuisition of better equipment, it's almost impossible to do if you're playing alone. Anything beyond a Velocidrome (or it's variants) proved too much of a challenge if you didn't properly equip yourself and had access to a ton of healing/support items. (And in Freedom Unite, you're forced to fight every type of monster on your own if you go with the Village Chief and Nekoht's missions.) And even with hacks, the monsters can be so cheap... The Diablos' charge, for example, causes him to slide so far away that his A.I. will always tell him to turn around and charge again, and he always begins the next pass before you can even get up. |

That looks... almost identical to Guild Wars, minus the cartoonish pigs with glasses :3 Maybe a Guild Wars-WoW hybrid? Not that this is a problem x3 I love Guild Wars <3 I'll have to look into this further. |
