Next-Gen Graphics look better than last-gen CGI

Has anyone ever noticed this? Everytime a new console comes out the gameplay(after a few years in) looks as good if not better than the CGI used in games before?

An example, God of War 3's in-game graphics look much better than the CG movies in both of the previous games for PS2. Many PS2 games have better graphics than the CG in PS1/N64 games.

I guess game developers and console developers want to one-up the best of their previous works. My friend was telling me about the GoW graphics comparison the other day.

What is the difference between a duck?

That's typically how you can benchmark where the industry is going for sure. It'll be hard to give any game bad graphics in the future as engines become so good that you'd have to be royally lazy to not score a 7 or 8 at the least.

Tell me, does anyone else feel...well...bored...by all the graphical advancement? In earlier gens, not being able to make realistic-looking graphics meant you had to be creative with your artwork. This led to developers taking many different approaches to great graphics, particularly in the SNES generation and earlier. You could just look at a screenshot, and immediately go "Oh yeah, it's that game", even if you weren't that familiar with it.

Nowadays (especially with the 360 and PS3) pretty much any game can have realistic-looking graphics, but there's a sense of sameness shared by all of them. When I flip through a game magazine quickly, many of the screenshots just kind of blur together and I feel like I'm looking at only one game. Even when I slow down, sometimes I actually get confused as to when one game's article ends and another begins, just because of the screenshots. It all looks wonderful, but I find myself not really caring anymore since wonderful-looking games are so easy to find now.

The only exceptions to the sameness anymore would be titles that are deliberately going for a stylish/cartoony look, like No More Heroes. I definitely don't think I'd mind seeing more of these kinds of games.

I agree with you on that one, Nail. A lot of games do look the same. Some games have different art styles though and it's nice when those come around.

I think a big offender for a lot of games looking the same is because many companies use the Unreal Engine. Bioshock, Mirrors Edge, Punisher: No Mercy, The Last Remnant, etc, etc, etc all use the same engine. Some games using it have a unique look, but most of them are all the same with the characters that look like plastic and everything is shiny.

.
I'm not sure that's always true...

Take Shadow the Hedgehog's CGI. Amazing. It's still better than 360/PS3 in-game graphics...

the Unreal Engine seems to make a lot of games look similar lately, but I'm quite satisfied with modern graphics right now. I mean, they look so impressive already.

The unreal engine looks horribly outdated to me compared to Killzone 2's engine. Of course I know all of their tricks like lighting baked into textures to give an illusion of looking better than it really is.

I said a few years in, usually, and not always the case but the example I gave is just one series that looks better. Also Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time looks just as good as that CGI in Shadow. The cutscenes in A Crack in Time are all in-game graphics.
