Nintendo has announced the 3DS, a new hand-held system set for release before March 2011 in Japan. This new system will be fully unveiled at this year's E3 show in June.
While details are a bit slim as of now, the announcement stated the console would incorporate 3D technology without the need for players to wear special glasses. The 3DS will also be backwards compatible with all DS and DSi software.

Nintendo says this new portable machine will "succeed" the DS series. As of December 2009, the DS console has sold 125 million units worldwide.

Rumors of a new DS console have been buzzing for a while now. The latest instance came from President and CEO Satoru Iwata, when he reportedly told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun the company was working on a DS successor that would have "highly detailed graphics" and use a sensor with the ability to "read the movements of people playing." Another rumor suggested NVIDIA's Tegra processor would power a new DS hand-held. Both of these reports remain unconfirmed as of now, however.

IGN has contacted Nintendo for additional details. We'll update this post when we hear more.

Update: Japanese newspaper Nikkei reports new details about the 3DS. While still unconfirmed by Nintendo, the system will apparently use a "3-D joystick" and will feature a "force feedback mechanism that will let players feel the collisions of a game character." An accelerometer to allow tilt functionality is also still under consideration.

The paper also says the 3DS will have "significant improvements in wireless communications speed and battery life," and notes the dual screens will not be larger than 4 inches each.

Little detail to go on at the moment but it all sounds interesting so far.

I'm not interested at the moment, but that's because I have no information on the console yet. I'm still using my normal DS, I haven't even gotten a DS light yet, I won't be getting DSi.
I'm a gamer and always will be a gamer. If you don't believe me. I have 430 Video Games and 19 Consoles.

I doubt you could beat that unless you are a gamer as well! =P

So, let's see if you can outdo "The Jet Gamer"

They've got to stop with the DS's.

I haven't touched my original in months. (And original is my favorite.)

Why thank you ^_^

But on a serious note, This is not another DS, 3DS is only a codename like the Dolphin was for Gamecube, its real name has yet to be revealed.

I find this interesting but as long as the new games that intrigue me can still be played in a DS Lite, I don't think I'll be buying it any time soon.

I think it's about time people started to get over the fact that this technology is outdated now. If people really want to play a GBA game, then get either a GBA, GBA:SP, GBA Player for the Gamecube, OR an original DS or the DS Lite. There's a lot of options out there and if you're daft enough to sell your old consoles then well, sucks to be you.

I agree. Backwards compatibility is great for the start of a new product, but I see no point in newer versions keeping it if it has been years outdated.

As for the 3D, it's cool, but eventually they'll run out of gimmicks and what will they do then? A small handful of first party games a year isn't going to cut it for me. Motion gaming, dual screens, 3D, etc.... I feel that to get attention companies(not just Nintendo) are just trying to change the tradition but lack focus on actual high production games. Nintendo already tricked so many into thinking that two screens is innovative but most of the games hardly utilize it well, once again it's mainly Nintendo's games that do.

But if it supports lots of games that aren't shovelware, I would take a look into it.

Hmm, I'm curious as to how they're going to make that possible. I'm also hoping the 3D is optional.

Ah, that's good to know.

Oh, so it's a new system and not just some update of the DS.

How detailed, exactly. I don't know why, but I'm imaging graphics a bit better then the Gamecube. I'll just wait and see.

If this is true, I wonder how they're going to make that possible. I'm guessing in a similar fashion to the Natal.

Huh, not sure how I feel about that last part.

Tilt function eh? Why does a sequel to Kirby Tilt and Tumble come to mind? XD

"significant improvements in wireless communications speed and battery life,"

That's always good.

Hmm, seems interesting enough. And since, as I pointed out, it's a new system as opposed to a simple upgrade, my chances of getting it have increased tenfold.

My console got thrown out. Nothing to do with me being stupid.

And since there were no DS games I was interested in getting, I don't need or want a DS. It would of course, be useful if Nintendo had the decency of making it's consoles all gen backwards compatible, but no, they think "Oh, there's no games that people will want to keep playing after so many years" and decide to be only one gen backwards comaptible.
And then they wonder why so many people have given up and use emulators.

meh, I'm getting bored of handheld gaming. For me, nothing will ever top the GBA. all of the awesome gba games on that, combined with being able to play original GB and GBC games on it was awesome.

People need to stop freaking out about backward compatibility, I mean... you get DS compatibility and that's fine.

It's sort of like asking for the Wii to be compatible with N64 cartridges, and if we're lucky you'll be able to just download the classic games.

If you want to play pokemon ruby, go play your gameboy.

No offense to the 3DS, but unless I see a Metal Gear 1 or 2 remake, (which by this point is possible) I'll stick to my DS Lite and PSP, thanks. I'm tired of gimmicks for handhelds. Belt out the good titles and be done with it.

I'll probably end up buying this. After all, I've bought all the other DS versions. I'll probably see it, think "who cares" then drop my DSi and it'll snap in half. And I'll end up buying it.

This better be a good one.
