Okay, so; Like the dumbass I am, I was going through the interwebz for a program I heard about, found it on some random website , made that awesome face and said "what could possibly go wrong?" So needless to say, Murphy's law kicked my ass. The program was escorted by a group of some 25 trojan's, worms, spyware, and other nasty things. My first thought. "But I have that antivirus that my cousin recommended. Trial period ended a week ago. So I went through this whole, 15 hour fight with the virus and deleted them all. But, it seems I may have harmed a few key components in the process. For some reason, if I were to open a program, like say, notepad for instance, I will get a pop-up asking me what program I wish to use to open notepad.exe. Now, if you are able to awnser my problem, you should know that any exe file does not require any program to open it. IT OPENS ITSELF. The only reason I can use Mozilla Firefox to post my tragedy is because it is listed as my default internet server.

tl;dr version: My computer thinks I need a program to open .exe files. Can I fix this?

...Seeing as EXEs are executable programs, if Windows lost the type association..nothing..and I mean nothing should work o_o.

I'd probably reformat and reinstall Windows at this point.

Well, I'm using fire fox right now, so it's working. However, that's because I accessed it as internet. If I try to acces it as Mozilla Firefox, the pop-up comes up.

And, would re-formating/re-installing windows make me lose my files? B/C I'd rather not spend $200 of a hard drive to back it up on.

Sorry for the DP, but I figured something out.

The problem is not that windows forgot how to use EXE files, because all the programs work. I just can't open them directly, I'd have to look for a file I created with said program and click "open" and it works fine.

Sigh.

Seen this issue too many times, never download random stuff. Always check first.
Also remember windows is poop so it will go wrong sometimes.

But it forgot how to read .exes? I haven't seen that one o.O

okay don't try to remove viruses yourself unless you know what you are doing.
Yes, you probably will have to reinstall windows and back up your data.

Either that or you can keep a ****** up computer :3

I'm not a new member, I'm an old one who forgot her account name and why she left.

Surely you can afford a few DVD discs to backup your documents on?
