From BBC News:![]() A teacher has been hailed a hero after tackling a man accused of opening fire at a school in the US city of Denver. Maths teacher David Benke brought down Bruco Strong Eagle Eastwood, 32, who has been charged with attempted murder. The 6.5ft (1.96m) former college basketball player pinned Mr Eastwood to the ground after he allegedly opened fire with a rifle, injuring two pupils. Police said the actions of Mr Benke and another teacher almost certainly prevented worse bloodshed. Mr Eastwood was bailed for $1m during a brief court hearing on Wednesday. Mr Benke's intervention has been widely praised, with a fan-page on the social networking website Facebook attracting more than 20,000 followers. Among the hundreds of messages posted on the site, one posted by Sherry Erhardt Wynne read: "You saved lives of innocent children, and as a parent, I say thank you. And way to go!" Another, posted by Jake Woodzboy Dodenhoff, read: "It's people like you that this world needs." 'Struggling around' The teacher, who was on duty in the car park at Deer Trail Middle School in Littleton, said he went to investigate after he heard what sounded like a firework. "Unfortunately he got another round off before I could grab him," said Mr Benke of his efforts to tackle the suspect. "He figured out that he wasn't going to be able to get another round chambered before I got to him so he dropped the gun and then we were kind of struggling around trying to get him subdued." One of the injured pupils is said to be "doing well" in hospital, while the other was discharged after being treated. Cy-Commentary: Get this, this happened in Littleton, Colorado where Columbine gunman Eric Harris lived. Aside from that, let me say that this guy has balls of steel, and I'm not exaggerating in the Duke Nukem fashion. Mr. Benke saved countless lives by doing this and prevented another Columbine scenario. Of course if Mr. Benke were legally allowed to carry a sidearm in a school building, and if he was properly trained and ready to deter the shooter with the threat or deployment (last resort of course) of deadly force, this'd be over a lot faster without the two causalities. Goes to show you gun-haters out there: ![]() |

I saw this on yahoo and I thought it was awesome. I wonder what provoked him do this though..... And they should have kept him in jail with no chance of bail. I mean come on what's going to stop him next time (Hopefully there won't be a next time but you never know with criminals). |

I'm bewildered that Cy Fox is able to twist this news story into a pro-gun argument. Not only was the crime committed using a gun, but a gun wasn't required to stop the criminal. Perhaps neither of those two children would've have been injured if guns weren't so readily available, hmm? |

^ Criminals will always find a way to possess a gun. The "Banning guns so criminals can't have one" argument is just stupid. |

Flying Battery Act 2

Whilst introducing a ban on firearms could never wipe out gun crime in its entirety, it would reduce it dramatically, regardless. |

Lava Reef Act 1

Tch. Not really. Canada has a gun registry, which, considering it's so faulty, is basically a gun ban. Guess what? 98% of our guns have been smuggled into the country. Only 2% are actually registered and legal. Who's to say the US won't do the same? They'd have more of a reason to. |

Yeah, but there's such a thing as doing it right. In Japan it's illegal for civillians to own guns. Yes, seedier folk do obtain guns via seedier means, hearing about someone going on a shooting spree is much rarer there than it is here. ...How in the blue balls of hell do you turn a teacher Saving schoolchildren into a pro-gun topic? |

This is what I was going to say, so quoted for great truth.
The problem is there's really no way to make sure it's being done right unless you search people's houses, and then you'll get sued. |

Well if the number of "Man goes on shooting spree" headlines go down you'll at least have a hunch that maybe the law prohibiting guns has something to do with it. Even though reasonable search and seizures do exist so you won't really get sued if you have a reasonable reason. |

Define reasonable. Now you see why it's very hard to not get sued for things like that. And I don't think "There is a slight possibility that you have an unregistered gun" is really a valid reason to search someone's home. |

Well, if there were a shooting and someone said "This crazy bastard has a gun" then the police could reasonably search their house. That, or just get a warrant. Yeah, randomly searching houses for guns is unreasonable and even a bit crazy, but they probably wouldn't have done that in the first place. |
