The Napoleonic Wars and the 19th century itself is a time I'm most influenced by as far as my personal culture. I've wondered many a time if I was meant to be fighting alongside the redcoats rather than sitting in front of the computer. Well now I can do the next best thing. Napoleon: Total War is the next offering in UK based developer "The Creative Assembly"'s Total War series. However it is not without its controversy. What we have here is basically a polished version of Empire: Total War. Polished because it offers several graphical and gameplay improvements from its predecessor. Originally the sky was the limit with the requirements for Empire's performance. I noticed a bit of lag with my laptop in Empire, even with my graphical settings in the Low-Medium range, which was later solved by an update. Napoleon however ran smoothly as soon as it was run. I was drawn into a 2v2 game and didn't encounter the lag I'd hated in Empire. On the gameplay side, Napoleon offers a multiplayer campaign, which was supposed to be a feature touted in Empire, but has still yet to appear in a beta stage. I've not tried the multiplayer campaign element myself, but it is my belief that you can go with or against your friends as separate factions alongside the feature that allows you to have a human opponent "drop in" and take control of A.I forces. As far as the single player element, Napoleon offers two full campaigns and what I deem to be a mini campaign, and finally the typical TW staple: skirmish mode. The two full campaigns consist of one that involves leading France to victory, while the other consists of controlling a faction in the historical Coalition that faced Napoleon. The mini campaign "Napoleon's Battles" has no actual campaign elements like in the main campaigns, but consists of several tactical missions linked together. Interface: 9/10 - The only qualm I have is that they changed the interface to be a long bar at the bottom of the screen, which threw me off from Empire and Medieval II. However there's now a better mini-map that even shows topography Graphics: 10/10 - It's eye candy if you can crank your system up to meet the engine's needs. It's eye candy even at the Low-Medium range. No more "Clone Armies" as in previous TW titles Gameplay: 9/10 - It's typical Total War, requiring you to have a sharp tactical mind and organization to go with it. The only qualm here is that it comes bundled with Steam, which is needed to get the ball rolling. The same happened with Empire, but at the same time, Steam was where Empire DLC was offered. One other little quibble (to me) is that in Naval skirmishes, don't bother looking for HMS Victory if you're playing as Great Britain, for it is (disappointingly) not there, probably waiting to become DLC as it had in Empire's Special Forces DLC. What's Trafalgar without Nelson's flagship? But at the same time, you now have a choice of who you choose to be the General of your ground forces in Land skirmish modes. Blank out your entire army, and you'll have several choices ranging from the generic General Staff (from Empire) to the likes of the Duke of Wellington and even Napoleon himself. One out of two CA? Story 10/10 - The Napoleonic Age? What else could be a more epic story next to the World Wars? Add in the narration from French actor Stephane Cornicard mixed in with CA's CGI-cutscenes, and you have immersion. Sound 10/10 - Cannon shot, muskets and rifles along with period music, and the mass variation in your army and navy's crew voices. A good old standby from Empire. Total Score: 90 out of 100 (90%) All in all, despite the controversial inclusion of Steam, and the steep price of $39.99, $49.99 for the Imperial Edition (though rumor has it you can get either the Imperial or Limited Edition for $39.95 retail some places), it's a worthy successor to Empire in my eyes. |

Napoleon is an enjoyable addition to the Total War franchise but it's not as a big a game changer as previous sequels. Visually stunning high-strategy from the masters of the genre. |
