it is way too cold for this
I'm sure there are people who have looked over at this role-play and wondered what's going on. Well, this is the story that spawned it!

The first chapter is only three and a half pages, and it's not the best thing ever, but it'll get better later.

I'D LOVE IT IF PEOPLE COULD TELL ME HOW TO IMPROVE K? <3

To those worried about Yrevals... I'll still write that, but I need to get my muse back. He kind of... Ran away. 8D;;

A-Anyway. Enjoy! C:

Chapter 1: Hachinohe
AKA Hell Frozen Over

July 13, 2010. It's hard to believe it's been twelve years... But I'm going back.

I'm headed for Hachinohe, Aomori. It's one of the colder parts of Japan; you know, one of those places where someone moves there and wonders why the hell it seemed like a good idea. I'm only moving back there because it's where my doctor's moving, and I refuse to switch. I think he's doing this on purpose.

My name is Daichi Mineto, or Mineto Daichi if your brain can't comprehend Japanese names and you need the surname to be listed last. I can't say I lead a very normal life, or that I'm a very normal person.

I know for sure I don't look normal. I've got purple hair (it's natural... don't ask) that covers my left eye, which is blind and a very nice (though kind of cloudy) shade of blue. I've got that whole heterochromia thing going on, so my other eye is green.

Looks aside, I'm... still pretty weird. Really, I must be insane. Case in point - I see wings. Not just on birds or bats; I see wings on cats, dogs, humans... If it moves, breathes, and isn't a bug (or anything microscopic... do I really need to be this specific?), I see wings on it. I don't remember ever not being able to see them. The wings are kind of like what people think of auras; they reflect the person's personality.

Yeah, my story is a weird one, and it's only going to get weirder.

~*~

I sit on a bench at the train station, headphones on and spaced out. The train should be arriving in about an hour.

I've never really liked train stations. They're too noisy, and all of the different colored wings are an eyesore. It looks like a piece of modern art. Bright splashes of color dot the otherwise mundane walls, paying no attention to... well, anything. Like I said, modern art.

An announcement comes on the loudspeakers. I pause my mp3 player to listen.

"...arrived. Passengers heading for Hachinohe, Aomori, please go to platform..."

That's my cue. I stand, stretching, then head for my train. Not a lot of people are heading for it; I guess it's not a popular spot. It never was. I do wonder if anything has changed in Hachinohe...

I find a seat in a corner and commence staring out the window. "Several years ago, in a foreign town, far away from home, I met the Count of Tuscany..." I'm stuck in trains way too often. At least the sight of the land flying by looks nice.

Someone sits next to me. "A young eccentric man, bred from royal blood, took me for a ride across the open countryside..." I take in his appearance at a glance - he's an American with medium-length black hair and amber eyes. He's wearing a white T-shirt, jeans, and a green baseball cap. His wings explain his rather idiotic attire - blue bat wings, signifying that he's headstrong, stupid, sarcastic, and quite possibly a clown. No sane person would wear warm-weather clothes in Hachinohe.

"Get into my car, let's go for a drive! Along the way I'll be your guide, just step inside!" "Hey, dude. Mind if I sit here?" He speaks surprisingly fluent Japanese for an American. "So... Hey. I'm June. You heading to that... Hachi place?" He talks too much.

I turn down the volume on my mp3 player slightly. "Daichi Mineto. Yes, I'm going to Hachinohe." "Maybe you recall a cannibal curator? A character inspired by my brother's life..."

"Hey, cool." He says "hey" a lot. "You moving there? Maybe we'll be going to the same school!" Oh hell... I hope not.

"Winding through the hills, the city far behind, on and on we drove, down narrow streets and dusty roads..."

The rest of the train ride is spent listening to Dream Theater's music in an attempt to drown out June's babbling. His voice is too loud, so I'm kind of failing.

Finally, we arrive in Hachinohe. I don't think I could have lived through another minute of that. Sadly, June's house is on the way to the school's dorm, so now I get to endure his complaints about the cold.

"Man it's cold here!" I knew it. The poor sap didn't even pack a coat. He supposedly has a light sweater, but that's apparently buried in one of his many bags. June should have done his research before bothering to come here.

"Welcome to Hell frozen over," I tell him.

June heads for his home and I head to the dorm. Luckily for me, his house is close to the train station. I continue on to the dorm alone. The streets are pretty quiet; it's to be expected, considering how cold it is.

It doesn't take me long to find the dorm. I adjust my scarf a bit before entering. After all, it wouldn't do to look stupid on day one... Not that I can really avoid that, seeing as I have purple hair, but I can try. Why don't I just dye it? Oh yeah, no money.

Two people are sitting in the dorm's lounge; one's a guy, one's a girl. The guy has short, bluish-gray hair and dark blue eyes. I think he's a jock. He's wearing what looks like a school uniform - a white polo with a dark blue jacket over it, dark blue pants, and white shoes. There's also a little green ribbon tied around his neck; if that's part of the uniform, I think I might die. The guy's got blue avian wings with sharp feathers; he's probably a leader.

The girl's a brunette with shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She's got the same uniform, but with a huge blue bow instead of the little green ribbon and a dark blue skirt instead of the pants. Her wings are bright green dragonfly wings, so she's probably determined but paranoid, and the kind of person who tries to be brave... Those wings look familiar.

...Shit, it's Yuki. I knew I would find an old friend here; I knew her back when I lived here twelve years ago. She was my neighbor; we were pretty good friends.

Yuki stands up, looking me over. She recognizes me. "Mineto...?"

I nod. "Hey, Yuki. It's been a while." I might as well act like I wasn't dreading this day. After all, she might get the wrong impression.

"So, you're Daichi-san?" The jock stands as well. "Yuki told me a bit about you. I'm Nakamura Akihiro." He smiles. "Welcome back to Hachinohe."

Well, at least they're polite. Akihiro and Yuki sit down, the former motioning for me to sit as well. I choose the spot next to Akihiro.

I might as well ask. "So, who else lives here?"

"Aside from us, there's only one other person right now - Kobayashi Mitsuki," Akihiro answers. "The dorm's pretty empty right now, but it'll probably fill up over time." I hope not. I like it just the way it is.

...What the hell? I just felt a weird tingling sensation. A quick glance around reveals subtle changes in Akihiro and Yuki's faces. Normal people wouldn't notice something like that. Their wings are drooping a little too, as though they're exhausted for whatever reason. They immediately take notice of my confusion, as betrayed by a quick glance at one another.

I decide to take a jab at this. "I feel as though I'm missing something here." After all, it wouldn't do to be kept in the dark from day one.

Yuki's surprise is evident on her face; Akihiro's a little subtler. He comes up with a quick excuse: "It's been a long day. We're all tired." Cute. "Anyway, your uniform should already be in your room. I've got some more things to do, so will you show him to his room, Yuki?"

Yuki nods, finally recovering from her slight surprise. We head up some stairs near the back. The dorm's co-ed; the girls are on the second floor and the guys are on the third. As far as I can tell, the rooms are pretty small, but that's to be expected. The dorm's nothing special; there are a couple of sofas and chairs in the lounge and a room off to the side with a large table and some chairs, which is probably a dining room. On the next two floors, there is a small room with a small table and a few chairs, and a hallway connecting to the other rooms branches out from that room. I've seen countless dorms like this.

Still, the school must have had a high budget when this was built; there is a small kitchen just off of the dining room, and the carpets have actual, eye-pleasing patterns on them. I'm willing to bet the budget is still at least somewhat high, since everything is surprisingly well kept.

Yuki leads me down the guys' hall, to the second door on the left. She hands me a key. "I'm sure you've heard this kind of thing before, but if you lose your key..."

"...Something will cometh from the heavens and kicketh mine unholy butt, I know." I've heard it a thousand times. Yuki nods, we say our good nights, and I turn to go to my room while she leaves for her own.

Yuki stops and looks back for a moment before continuing on. Thinking nothing of it, I enter my room to prepare for the next day...

"The Count Of Tuscany" is owned by Dream Theater. That's the song at the beginning of the chapter.

Just so we're all clear (I already cleared this up with Blaire), this isn't a fanfic. 8D;;

Anyway, sorry for taking so long. Here's chapter two!

...By the way, it's probably not all that great. Criticism is welcome. 8D;; I want to get better.

Chapter 2: Tamashiigami High
WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN

A week passes without incident. I'm now enrolled in Tamashiigami High School. It seems that no one remembers me, so I'm in luck. Of course, they can barely remember what happened one year ago, let alone twelve.

Luckily for me, June isn't in my homeroom. I'm in 2-2 and he's in 2-3. Actually, I don't know a single person in my homeroom. Perhaps that's for the best.

The school uniform is kind of weird and kind of simple. Everyone wears the dark blue coat. Underneath that, everyone has to wear a polo or one of those other button-up shirts. With that, girls wear dark blue pleated skirts that end a little past the knee, often with long socks to protect their legs from the cold. Weather is a harsh mistress. Anyway, the guys wear dark blue pants. Interesting, right? I'm sure everyone would rather wear the skirts. We all get to wear bows around our necks, too. The girls' bows are bigger and poofier than the guys' (hmm... like the chests). Colors signify grade level - red for first years, blue for second, and green for third.

I head to the art classroom after school. No matter where I go, I always join art club. Art is freedom. Freedom is life. Mitsuki seems to think the same way - art club is the where I first met her.

I have to say, if I went for girls because of their looks, I'd probably be among the guys striving to get her attention. Those sad saps don't even realize that she's clearly going to wind up with Akihiro... Erm, anyway, moving on, yeah, purge that thought. I won't even go there.

Anyway, Mitsuki's a senior with long, ginger hair that she keeps back in a ponytail. It looks like she takes care to not let a single hair move out of place. Her eyes are a striking green, and her wings are deep purple, sharply angled fairy wings. As such, the doctor says she must be commanding, intelligent, very proud, and I will never, ever get on her bad side. I rather enjoy living.

We arrive at the same time, greeting each other silently. Club goes by without a hitch; I've just finished a painting I have been working on since my last week at my old school. In the painting, a small, tortoiseshell-furred Scottish fold cat with bright gold avian wings sits against a nighttime field backdrop. A full moon hangs in the sky, and some of the stars are blotted out by the glow of the wings.

I put the painting up to dry at the end, and Mitsuki, one of the last to leave, takes a look at it. "You are quite a talented artist," she tells me. Now why does she have to put me on the spot here?

I begin cleaning the room. The members take turns with cleanup, and today it's my turn - of course, it's a hard job, seeing as no one ever has the kindness to clean up after him or herself. "Thanks. I've been working on that one for a while." I make a brave attempt to clean up a papier-mâché spill. Seriously, why don't people clean up as they go?

Mitsuki comes over to help me. "Ah- thanks, but you don't have to help me. I've got time to kill," I tell her. As much as I absolutely love the imposing company of an empress, I kind of wanted to space out on my own.

"Perhaps, but you are the only one who never has help. I might as well do something kind," she replies. Well, it's true. Everyone's got someone, Mitsuki has everyone, and I'm the lonely, silent one. I prefer it that way, really.

"Suit yourself," I find myself saying. I guess I can appreciate a little help.

The spill gets cleaned up, and I start collecting paintbrushes to wash them. Luckily, this is an easy task, as long as I don't find any broken ones. After all, I would have to report broken or missing paintbrushes in order to get them replaced. A shortage would be unacceptable, but reporting that kind of stuff is way more work than it should be.

That weird tingling sensation from the first day comes over me again. Actually, it seems a little different- wait, what? I move my hand. A statue-like hand exists where it once was. What is this? Why am I saying weird crap that seems so out of character? Why am I asking myself questions?

I turn around and see Mitsuki standing next to a Mitsuki statue. It looks so very freaky. She seems a little surprised, but not at her surroundings - she's looking at me. Her wings seem a little different somehow...

She quickly regains whatever composure she might have lost. She still seems a little confused, though. "You have awakened sooner than we expected," she says, half to herself. "And your wings..."

"You can see them?" Well, I'm surprised. I thought I was crazy.

"Wh... You knew of their existence?" Yet again, Mitsuki is confused. "But how...? They only appear in Manala..."

I stretch my arms. It's kind of weird, but I kind of feel at home right now. "I've seen them for a while." I pause for a moment. "...So, what exactly is going on?" I can sort of sense something evil lurking nearby. I'm pretty sure Mitsuki knows about it - she may even be trying to keep me here because she thinks I don't know how to fight.

A faint smile appears on Mitsuki's face at the question. "Simply put, you and I have just gone to another world." Nice way of putting it. "As time moves here, our world stops. Only certain people can travel between the two."

Mitsuki's attention suddenly shifts to something else. An energy sword appears in her hand; the blade matches the color of her wings. Something is coming... No, there are fighting noises in the hall. Mitsuki cautiously opens the door and looks out. I watch from a distance.

Someone is fighting some weird monster in the hall... The fighter looks like Yuki. She fights with a spear. She charges at the humanoid, dark-winged demon, aiming a well-placed strike at it. While it's distracted, Mitsuki runs in and jabs her sword at it, finishing it off in no time flat.

I feel a headache coming on... I lean against a table, putting one hand on my forehead. It's getting worse. Mitsuki and Yuki are trying to say something, but I can't hear them... I hear something else- a voice? What is it saying? My vision - everything is getting brighter - hold on - what's that - a voice...?

"I am your soul,
With you I grew;
I am your life,
And I am you."

What...?

"...to..."

Is that Yuki's voice...?

"...Mineto..."

I open my eyes and immediately notice something different. My vision just expanded, and... I have depth perception!

...Oh, and Yuki's in my face, staring at me worriedly.

Yuki moves aside as I sit up, shaking my head. I still have a bit of a headache, but it's not that bad anymore. A quick glance around the room reveals Yuki to my left and Mitsuki to the far right. Akihiro is standing next to her; he must have walked in during my little spell. We're still in the art classroom, and the two statues from before are still here.

"What just happened...?" I've been asking way too many questions lately.

"I don't know!" Yuki sounds really worried... "I came in here after fighting some demons off, and I found you holding your head and looking ready to collapse!"

Mitsuki speaks up. "You seemed to be in pain... You were holding your head, as she said, and you were hyperventilating." I was that bad?

"That was all happening when I came in," Akihiro added. "You screamed and collapsed, then woke up a few minutes later." Wow. It looked worse than it felt.

"Do you even remember any of that...?" Yuki asks.

I shake my head. "Not a bit of it." I stand, and Yuki follows suit. "I'm probably just- hm?" I sense something again... A creature is silently entering the room behind the others' backs.

I've been having some freaky dreams throughout my life. They seem to have predicted my coming into this weird world, since they involved people turning into statues and time freezing... The dreams involve summoning varied weapons and creatures - though summoning doesn't seem like the right word for the creatures. It's more like I become the creatures. Spells were also pretty common in those dreams.

Well, I've got a crazy idea. I might as well try it.

I concentrate for a bit and summon a heavy, onyx-bladed sword. The demon creature is about to attack the bewildered-looking Yuki. I shove her out of the way, then bringeth mine unholy wrath upon the beast with mine blade. It is a weak one - it's taken out in one hit.

"I... You... What?" I guess that went too fast for Yuki's brain to comprehend. She gives me a bemused look. I would laugh, but I don't laugh.

"You seem to know more than expected about this world." Mitsuki takes my sword, and the blade changes to a deep amethyst. "Odd..."

There isn't a thing about me that isn't odd. I let the sword disappear - I'm confident no other beasties will attack. At this point, I think I can trust my gut. "I'm actually clueless," I tell Mitsuki. "I'm going completely by instinct."

"That's actually pretty impressive," Akihiro tells me. "It normally takes a few tries to summon a weapon, but you got yours on your first try."

Yuki nods, managing to recover. "Yeah... It took me a while to get it the first time."

...I don't like the smile I'm seeing on Mitsuki's face. Don't tell me...

"I think it's time to start training." Crap.

SCAN COMPLETE. SYSTEMS OPERATING AT 97.8% EFFICIENCY. PROCESSOR DAMAGED; SOME DATA CANNOT BE RETRIEVED. LIMBS FUNCTIONING. SENSES FUNCTIONING. COMMUNICATOR DISABLED. POWER CORE INTACT.

0 VIRUSES FOUND. 0 UPDATES FOUND.

SYSTEM REBOOT REQUIRED.

REBOOTING...

VISION AND AUDIO SENSORS ENABLED. INTERNAL MAP ENABLED.

CURRENT LOCATION: UNDEFINED SCRAP HEAP - TOKYO, JAPAN

LOADING PRIMARY OBJECTIVE...

I raise myself from the pile of scrap metal I appear to have been discarded upon. Objective is to find and protect a certain target. Target information is unknown. Target will be registered upon detection. Target's whereabouts are unknown. General direction is north.

Scanning the area... Short-range: Zero threats detected. Zero humans detected. Long-range: Limited minor threats detected.

I begin moving north. My destination is unknown and my target is unknown. However, finding the target is my top priority. The likeliness that this mission will succeed is at less than 1%.

I run forward at top speed. I reach a city in 24.6547 minutes. I cease running. Humans are walking the streets, and I must refrain from inadvertently bringing harm to them.

I continue walking until I notice a tangle of metal tubes in an area where young humans appear to be training. A group of them runs from one, who attempts to chase them down. It appears to be speed and endurance training.

The one chasing catches up to a young female and taps her on the shoulder. "Tag, you're it!" he shouts.

The children then commence running from that child. I observe for a few seconds longer before continuing north. Viewing the training seems to have unlocked a memory file.

A group of older humans were fighting. They were training. I simply observed as a guard, making sure no humans were injured. Faces are blurred, and there is no color. The file appears to be faulty. A human walked up to me and said some indistinguishable words. The only detail I can make out is his short hair length. He is identified in the file as "creator." End of file.

I continue on.

My internal map states that I have left Tokyo. No other maps are downloaded.

Eventually, I reach a small, rural town. I must rest to prevent overheating. I choose to sit at the base of a tree in a location with few humans. My audio sensors pick up a group of children that appear to be doing stealth training. Two children hide as quietly as they can while another one seems to be about to search for them.

One moves to hide behind the tree I am under. Her age is most likely six years. "Oh! Hi Miss! Do you want to play hide-and-seek too?" The corners of her mouth turn up. My internal dictionary labels this as a "smile."

"No. I am on an important mission," I reply.

"What is it?" she asks. She does not seem to hear as the child looking for the others begins making his way here.

"I am looking for someone." Cooldown time remaining: 5 minutes.

"Oh..." The girl pauses, putting a finger over her mouth. "Are you a spy?" She drags the final vowel out for a few seconds.

"No, I am not." My purpose does not need to be specified.

"Found you!" I look behind myself. A male child is standing just behind the tree, leaning around it to look at us. It appears that he is the one who was searching for the others heard us. "Who're you?" The question is directed at me.

I make a swift search through my files. I recall being ordered to use only my given name rather than my model number when asked such a question. One search result. "My name is Aegis," I say. Cooldown time remaining: 4 minutes.

"Kay. You're it next time, Aegis-chan!" The male runs away before I can decline. It appears that I have no choice.

I look to the female. "Please explain," I tell her.

"Seta-kun wants you to play with us!" She makes a noise – vocabulary files list it as "laughter." "I'm Akane, and the last one Seta-kun’s gonna find is Miku. Can you please play with us?" She stares at me with wide eyes. She is "pleading."

It appears to be of little consequence – and possibly some benefit – to "play" with these children. I agree to do so. Akane explains the rules of this "game" to me, and I record them in my memory files.

Miku and Seta return to where Seta had begun. Shortly after, the three children scatter as I cover my visionary sensors and begin the process of counting. I choose to handicap myself to even the odds, as humans do not have the heightened senses and strength artificial beings have.

The first one I choose to search for is Miku. I begin moving in the direction she went in. I look behind trees and in bushes, recalling that Akane mentioned that Miku was impossible to find. I recall that humans rarely look up when searching.

I look up into the branches of a tree. Miku is hiding among the leaves, well camouflaged to any human not paying attention. "I have found you," I tell her.

She comes down, laughing. "No one’s ever found me before!"

Miku follows me as I move along to find Seta. Visionary sensors pick up minimal shaking in a bush. I investigate.

"Oops, you found me!" Seta jumps out of the bush, making Miku jump back. She is "surprised." A sneeze comes from behind a nearby tree.

"Bless you, Akane," Miku says casually.

Akane’s voice comes from behind the tree. "Thanks! I-" There is a short period of silence before the three children burst into laughter.

"Okay, I'm it next," Miku says after the laughing is over.

The "game" is cut short, however, when a voice calls for the children. "Kids, it's time for dinner!"

The owner of the voice emerges from between two trees. It is an older woman with long, black hair tied into a ponytail. She appears similar to another human in a partially corrupt file. It is unknown who these humans are.

"There you kinds are." She looks up at me after looking at the children. "They haven't caused you too much trouble, have they?"

"None at all," I say.

"Great. I'm Arakawa Kira. Would you like to join us for dinner?" she offers.

"Please?" Akane adds, pleading once again.

"My name is Aegis," I tell her. "I have a high-priority mission to attend to, however, and I do not wish to delay much longer."

I sense curiosity coming from Kira. "I think I might be able to help," she tells me.

Weighing choices... "I comprehend. I will go with you."

We walk to the Arakawa household, where Kira bids the children to wash, leaving us alone. She turns to me. "Aegis, huh?" she begins. "My grandfather mentioned that name in his letters home. The last anyone heard about that project was that all of the robots destroyed and the scientists killed – so how are you here?" Facial recognition confirmed. Arakawa Kira's grandfather was a scientist working on the project that created a line of androids that began with me.

"That is unknown," I tell her. "My memory files are unable to be retrieved."

"I see..." She pauses. "So, what is your mission?"

"To find an unknown human in an unknown location north of here." My statement provokes another curious look.

"How will you know when you've found that person?"

"Target will be known upon detection."

Kira shrugs. "I guess I should've expected that. Well, you should stay here for a while and learn a bit about society. It's pretty obvious that you weren't made to go outside of the lab."

I nod. "Affirmative. I will do as you say."

"Great," she says. "Just don't let anyone know you're a robot. Akane, Miku, Seta, and I are the only ones who should know. All right?"

"I comprehend," I tell her. "No other human shall have this information."

Okay...

This is very good, but chapter two was kinda jumpy to me. The setting just so suddenly changed it was a bit hard to keep up with, and I had to read it over again to make sure I hadn't missed anything. There doesn't seem to be any major spelling errors, so that's all good... The chapters are nice and long, but not so long that they become boring... The formatting is legible...
Yeah, I don't really see anything wrong with this. Keep it up!
i'm actually really sorry bout this
