No this is not Windows 7 you are seeing, nor is it a simple paste over theme.

http://www.askvg.com/transform-windows-xp-into-windows-7-without-using-customization-pack/

If you've always wanted the shiny new look of Windows 7 but weren't willing to take the risk after Vista, don't have the money, or just flat out prefer XP, there is a new option. Using a combination of some technical maneuvering, part theme, part coding e.t.c. You can emulate the W7 environment right down to its drag and snap, shake, and desktop view features.. all at far less cost of memory, while still maintaining the XP solidness we've all grown accustomed to.

I only just finished setting all the quirks up today but overall it works pretty nicely, still got a couple things to configure but it's pretty much golden. You can choose to be 7 right down to the last pixel or keep certain things the same (like I kept the Start menu layout as is) and just enjoy the shininess. The one detractor is that startup is slown down a tiny bit by the few extra programs that run at that time but it's not huge and it smoothes itself out as you get going. I personally kept my custom bootup screen since if I have to stare at something that doesn't move, it might as well be something I like. :3

Pairing all this with my Windows XP version of Direct X10, I might as well be running 7 for free with coding security and the shiny interface. I love having the best of both worlds. ^^

This looks incredible; the best Windows 7 transformation I've seen, as of now. The aero effects would most likely kill a system that was packaged with XP, though. :\

Nah, it all depends on the strength of your system, I get all the Aero effects to work just fine.

What is your system's specification?

Your PC should be able to run it since it's simply just reskinning and retooling some programming code.

Specs u say?

Windows XP Pro SP3
Intel Pentium D dual-core @ 2.90Ghz (a slight overclock)
3070MB (3.7GB) available RAM, 4GB total (running at a 2.9Ghz overclock as well)
5GB allocation to my Paige File (Hard Drive storage used as RAM)
Direct X 10.0
2 NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GTs (512MB Video RAM per)
37" HDTV "Plug and Play" Monitor (not really a spec but it effects resolution stuff)

Not the greatest specs ever but runs Crysis just fine.. impressive for a 6 year old PC I've kept runnin with my own upgrades.

Except that most XP computers never came packaged with that much ram or video cards. Heck a lot of them are incompatible with that much ram due to their motherboards.

Old Windows XP laptop's specs:
1.5GHZ Celeron M
512MB DDR2 RAM (Upgraded from 256MB)
SiS 661FX graphics chip; up to 64MB shared memory
Shit specs are shit.

Ur right... I can! >3

[/bragging]

But yeah, I made a few more changes since then to make the volume control console more closely reflect 7. The calculator and all the rest of the minor components have been switched in as well.

The following is advice from a licensed IT professional!

Just remember that this is a risky procedure that will change core system files. I've actually screwed up a procedure like this (Yes, I am human and I can err like anyone else xP). So word to the wise, backup anything important to removable media (DVDs, CDs, external hard drives, etc.) before you toy with any of this stuff. Make sure that you have genuine Windows media and a legitimate license key in case you need to reinstall it. Also make sure that you know that you're doing this at your own risk. Bowie and anyone else that advocates this procedure cannot be held responsible or liable for any damage done.

Wow this is a great find. Would this also be compatible with Vista? or is it just XP?

I would heed Cy's warning as this can be risky.. but I do believe some of the modifications are cross comparable between Vista and XP but I'm not 100% sure on all of them, so I'd check the steps to see what they state.

I did the easy thing and just bought a new Laptop with W7. The only downside is my Graphics card is crap and My processor sucks. I am planning on saving up to buy a better Laptop with all the good stuff. Mind you this Laptop was a Christmas gift. And it was on sale during thanksgiving. Plus my old PC was slow as crap. Plus I was too lazy to upgrade it with newer stuff (But also I didn't have the money either).
