A McDonald's outlet in the Netherlands was wrong to sack an employee for giving a colleague a piece of cheese on a hamburger, a court has ruled.

The waitress was fired last March after she sold a hamburger to a co-worker who then asked for cheese, which she added.

The fast-food chain argued this turned the hamburger into a cheeseburger, and so she should have charged more.

But Leeuwarden district court ruled a written warning would have been more appropriate.

McDonald's was ordered to pay the former employee more than 4,200 euros ($5,900; £3,660) for the last five months of her contract.

The fast-food chain had argued that the waitress - who was employed at a branch in the northern town of Lemmer - had broken staff rules prohibiting free gifts to family, friends or colleagues.

But the court said in its written judgement: "The dismissal was too severe a measure. It is just a slice of cheese," reports AFP news agency.

The ruling comes days after McDonald's reported an increase in net profits by almost a quarter in the last three months of 2009.

Let's see, a cheese slice is like what? 3 or 4 cents maybe? Jesus.

It's just a slice of cheese, people. Is it that big of a deal that legal action must be taken?

Swaying to the symphony,
Swaying to the symphony of destruction.

Ten cents' difference. Damn cheapskates. And now it cost that location more than even that. Ironic, maybe?
Indeed, there is nothing more repulsive than these monsters that defy nature and are known by the name of witcher, as they are the offspring of foul sorcery and witchcraft. They are unscrupulous scoundrels without conscience and virtue, veritable creatures from hell capable only of taking lives. They have no place amongst decent and honest folk.

More like most of the time. I could probably create an anti-McDonalds forum/website filled to the brink with cases like this and other reasons McDonalds is so completely lame.

((This reminds me of the time that woman spilled hot coffee on her lap and she actually won a lawsuit against McDonalds (I think). I guess now, because of her, we all get cold coffee.))

But anyway, back on topic.

Wow. Cheese? They wanted to fire her over cheese? And they actually went legal with it? God damn, people really have lost all understanding of what life really is, haven't they?

I'll bet the branch manager's kicking themselves over this one. XD Well done, mate, you just cost your employers a few thousand dollars.

Having said that, to Giygas, Cosmic Destroyer of Worlds a large corporation like McDonalds, what's five thousand bucks anyway?

How un-just. That cheese slice could be a matter of life or death. I wouldn't be surprised if the fate of the world fell on those extra 2 cents. They should've given her life in prison. Does she not understand how important the price of cheese is?

Jeeeesus, its a peice of cheese! Its about a 10 cent difference. Fireing the waitress (who was probably a frikin' teenager) was just plain stupid. Well, they got the shit end of the stick and ended up paying lots-o-cash to the waitress. So in the end, cheese is more powerful then any countrys legal system. POWER TO THE CHEESE!
