A look back at 2009: Killzone 2.

Here I will reflect on Killzone 2. Killzone 2 was clearly one of the best Shooters in 2009 and many would argue the best, which makes it a disappointment that it got snubbed just because it released early in the year. This always happens, a great game released in the beginning of the year gets forgotten in the hype of games at the end of the year.

Now there are rumors that Killzone 3 news will come out next month. While I don't doubt that, I do doubt a 2010 release date. Simply because Resistance 3 is due out this Fall and Sony pushed back KZ2 to not cannibalize sells from Resistance 2. I would expect Killzone 3 to release around February 2011 which puts it inline with the two year dev cycle that many games are put in now days. Just imagine how much of a leap in graphics it will have. Anyway, that's another topic.

Back to Killzone 2. I had a blast with it and the innovative first person cover system was really fun, it was better than just squatting behind a box like in other FPS games for cover. There was so much action in this game and the graphics are still unsurpassed by any FPS aside from Crysis on PC. The animations are also top notch, killing Helghast does not yield the same boring death animations all the time. When you shoot them, they react realistically to how they got shot and this is due to a lot of the animations being motion captured by actors in a studio instead of just scripted. The A.I. is better than any of the FPS games I've played, they aren't stupid.

I think the Online play is very fun as well, but I am not much into online(because of sore losers and jerks) so I didn't get into it much. The game is not without its flaws, I think there are some things that could be improved. It really could use split-screen multiplayer and/or co-op campaign. While I'm not one to complain about a game just being single player, lets face it those are pretty much standard in shooters now. Plus the story wasn't the best, I'd say it was pretty average as far as stories go. Both of which are something I'm sure they'll add/change in Killzone 3.

Here are a list of the awards it has won, but what do you have to say about Killzone 2? I know a few of you have played it here, so what are your reflections on the game? Maybe you haven't played it but just read about it? Go ahead and discuss it here.

Killzone 2 awards:

- Game of the Year from Gamereactor.
- Best PS3 Shooter from IGN.
- Best Competitive Muliplayer from GameSpot.
- Best Sound Design from GameSpot.
- Most Improved Sequel from GameSpot.
- Best Shooter from GameSpot.
- Best Graphics from G-Phoria 2009 Awards.

I have to agree that KZ2 was one of the best shooters I've ever played. My brother refused to play it at first, but once I convinced him to, he played for 3 straight days. XD I liked the cover system, but it was kind of annoying that there was no toggle. You spend virtually the whole game holding L2 (more so on the higher difficulties). Speaking of which, I still haven't beaten Elite difficulty. XD I love how smart the AI can be. Every time I get killed, I can't help but think 'Agh! Smart little buggers!'

The multiplayer is really fun too. Except there's an extreme lack of ranks. I was a General in 4 days. XD That, and I'm amazing at KZ2 (Sonic Paradise can vouch for me on that. XD ) Other than that, if you can find a big, fair game with fair players, it can get really intense. Definitely a game that all FPS fans should experience at least once.

Why did your brother not want to play it? Afraid? lol Yeah you did have to hold L2 the whole time, but that didn't really annoy me. Glad zoom had toggle though. Dude... Elite has got to be insane, I've only tried it on Hard which I got most of the way through. I beat it on medium which is fairly easy 99% of the game, it's just that %$#*ing last level!! It's like the difficulty shoots up 10 notches!! Radec and his minions are just really hard, especially when they get those rocket launchers. Ugh.

Have you bought any of the map packs? I've just recently tried playing more online to get my rank up. It's going pretty quickly. Maybe we should play sometime? ;)

I have the first 2 map packs. I still need the Napalm and Cordite Pack. My bro was reluctant to play it because he's a real Halo fanboy, and I told him he'd enjoy KZ2 a LOT more. He did. XD

And sure, I'd like to hit you up for a few rounds, but Scout makes it kind of one-sided unless enemy display is always on. ;)

Ah, this game along with Ratchet & Clank are the reasons why I picked up a PS3. I love Killzone 2, 3rd favorite game of 09 behind Uncharted 2 and Borderlands respectively. The campaign was fun as hell, the story wasn't that interesting but actually playing it was fun. Multiplayer was even better, probably the best multiplayer fps I've ever played outside of TF2. I love the class based system (which is why I love TF2) the guns all have a unique look and feel to them. I played KZ2 for about 2 months straight. I still play it, just nowhere close as often nowadays. I've been too distracted by Uncharted 2 and PC gaming (omg Stalker) lately.

I have all of the maps. Bought the big pack that had all 3 map packs in one. Great deal. The dlc maps are kickass. They're all better then the original maps we got. As for my actual skill level at the game, I would say I'm about decent. I usually come in at least the top 10 or 5 with a passable k/d >_>. My lifetime k/d isn't that great :/. I've had some moments though, 17 kill streak with a shotgun in Salamun Market was probably my best. I never found a gun I can really stick to using though. I probably use EVERY gun about evenly except for the pistol, I got a revolver :D.

I'm open for some KZ2 multiplayer if you guys are interested. Anyone have a mic?

I have a mic, but I really never use it. lol I just don't feel like talking to people I don't know. I'd say I'm decent at multiplayer, but not above average. I just play for fun in online games though, not for competition so k/d ratio and having to have great stats do not interest me.

I'd be down, but it'd have to be a time when we all feel like it and have time. Also, do you guys know how you get to revive fallen comrades? I'm thinking it has to do with rank, but I'm not sure which rank gets you there.

You have to get Medic class, which I think is about 4 (?) ranks in.

EDIT: Speaking of organising a time where we're all on, I posted something in the PS3 element expansion on KZ2. I'm surprised nobody's checked it. :/

That's what that thing is about? >_> I never really bothered to check it. Is a section like that even necessary?

Also if you heal 10 people as a medic in 8 matches (something like that) you unlock blood packs, used to fully heal yourself and teammates. Very helpful.
