 Developer: Nintendo Genre: RPG Release Date: July 29, 2001 Number of Players: 1-2 (2 in trades only) Platforms: Gameboy Color Like Yellow to Red, Green and Blue, Crystal is the "special edition" of Gold and Silver. This was the second game I ever owned for my GBA, and I got it from my grandfather, who since then has passed away. So this game holds special meaning to me. Today, I will try to review it without any bias. STORY: The story is set in the Johto Region, a place west of Kanto sharing the same Elite Four, inhabited by humans and Pokemon, mysterious and sometimes dangerous creatures. You begin as a boy or girl with a name of your choice, who meets your local professor, Professor Elm, who asks for your help with getting a package from Professor Oak and Mr. Pokemon, since he and his assistant are too busy to do it themselves. He offers to lend you a Pokemon in order to protect you from Wild Pokemon you will encounter. After lending you either a Grass, Water or Fire type Pokemon, you set out to get the package. On your way out of town, you see a strange emo redhead boy looking through the window of the lab. After you get the package and are almost home, the redhead attacks you with his Pokemon, then leaves. When you return to the lab, the Professor informs you that the redhead boy stole one of his Pokemon. You now name the redhead, who will be your rival throughout the story. After you deliver the package to Elm, he sees you have developed a bond with your Pokemon, and gives it to you. You then set off to become the Pokemon champion, while defeating Team Rocket, who is supposed to have disbanded but is working underground. GAMEPLAY: There are two types of gameplay, one where you wander around in a world, comprised of ciities, forests, caves, water, and grass. As soon as you encounter a Pokemon or a Trainer however, the gameplay switches to a round-style gameplay, with the two Pokemon duking it out. Your Pokemon can learn up to four moves, with 16 different types and various attack power that will either be normally effective, super effective, not very effective, or not effective at all. You also have items, which in most cases can heal your Pokemon, capture other Pokemon, or teach your Pokemon moves. In this game, as opposed to Red and Blue, there are different slots for each item type, allowing for more items to be carried. Some items are crucial for the game, while others are not. During the game, you fight Trainers and Gym Leaders, who incresingly get stronger until you beat the Eite Four (the final bosses) Spoiler: click to toggle CHARACTERS: Crystal- The silent protagonist, either male or female. You control this character and help him or her become Pokemon Champion. ???- A mysterious emo teenager obsessed with being powerful. Later, he is revealed to be Spoiler: click to toggle Professor Elm- A professor researching Pokemon Eggs. You help him on his research and he in turn is your main guide through the game. Trainers and Gym Leaders- People who raise Pokemon and challenge you to battles. Gym Leaders give you badges when defeated, unlocking special moves and allowing you to fight the Elite Four when you have all 12. Spoiler: click to toggle GRAPHICS: The graphics are much better than Red and Blue, with full colour and moving Pokemon sprites. The colour is a bit drab, without much shading, but hey, it's a GBC game. SOUND: The music is unremarkable, but is not generally an Ear Worm. Some common Pokemon's cries will become extremely irritating, as does the battle music occasionally. However, when fighting the legendary dogs, different music comes up, and can sometimes startle you if you're not expecting it. REPLAY: Unfortunately, once you've completed the game 100% (Which takes a long time, fortunately) there's not a lot to do with the game but start over picking a different Pokemon. OVERALL: This game is a massive step up from Red and Blue and not much of one down from Ruby and Sapphire. I recomend it to anyone with a working GBC or GBA. That was only in the Pokemon Adventure's manga I believe, which is not canon to the games' storyline. Other then that, great review. I agree, Crystal was a fun game. |

Actually, I believe it was confirmed in the two new upcoming games, HeartGold and SoulSilver. Can't find proof anywhere though, but I thought I heard it on serebii.net for the games as well. |

Oh my god, you have no idea how much I love that game. Out of my top three favorite games, Pokemon Crystal is easily my third, only to Sonic Adventure 2 and Tomb Raider 1. That is by far the best Pokemon game easily. It has two regions, so many places to train, and the rival and Red are absolutely amazing. If I were rating this game, easily it would get a 10/10. And I am completely excited for HeartGold and SoulSilver, which comes out March 14th. I am so ready for this game. |

The fact that ??? is who he is is confirmed in Sapphire or Leaf Green I think, because I've only ever played the games... Or maybe it's when you defeat the Kanto Team Rocket division that you find out. I don't remember. |

Huh. I never thought that ??? was Giovanni's son. With where the anime is now, I thought he was Paul when he was in Johto/Kanto.
