In short, the following are e-books that discuss the basics of writing. These have helped me tremendously; I hope they do the same for you.

If you have any legal material you think deserves to be added to the list, let me know!

On Writing Well by William Zinsser. This book is probably my favorite; it's definitely the one I quote most often. Although it claims to be a book on writing non-fiction, its advice is pertinent to all writers.

The Elements of Style by Oliver Strunk and E.B. White. A classic, this book covers basic issues of style more succinctly than any other text I've read. It's dated and less than thorough, but I promise you—give this book some attention, and you will find gold.

On Writing by Stephen King. What's legally available online for this book has been cut from what I had originally; I apologize.

Bird by Bird This one was removed from Google Books completely )= Nevertheless, I recommend it. While the actual writing advice repeats what you'll read in On Writing and On Writing Well, Anne Lamott covers area that none of the other authors touch—Why do writers write? What's the point? If there's no money in the proposition for you, what do you stand to gain from sitting down and drawing your story? While you probably think you have an answer to that, I can almost guarantee that Anne Lamott's answers will make you think and—I hope—write. I say that the other three text books tell you how to write; Bird by Bird makes you want to write.

Kate DiCamillo's On Writing Very short, very sweet, but this one's worth it. It's a short essay on what Kate thinks writing's about, and if you ask me, it's also the world's shortest and best guide to character-creation

My mirrors reflect your fate
I actually have a question.

I'm writing a story (a fanfic in this case) that's based solely on one of my characters. I have already finished four chapters of it, and I'm currently working on the fifth chapter, but I need a bit of help with it. The whole story, as of the first four chapters, are entirely written in the first person POV. The thing I need help with is the fifth chapter. The problem comes with switching between POV's between chapters.

For example, let's say someone's writing a story or a book and they need to make a change from one POV to another in the next chapter. The main character is being portrayed as being in the first person for a good portion of the book, but in the next chapter, the author needs to make a transition to, say, two other characters important to the continuity of the story, away from the first person POV used for the main character.

So my question is, how do I make that POV change from one character in one chapter to another character in the following chapter?
Just like the pied piper,
Led rats through the streets,
We dance like marionettes,
Swaying to the symphony,
Swaying to the symphony of destruction.

I've written a tutorial on how to write summaries--the kind of description that sites like FanFiction.Net use. I've seen a lot of fanfic writers struggle with summaries, who don't seem to think theirs are any good, or just don't know what to say (I used to have that problem). Hopefully it can give someone a few ideas.

I love programming! I work at Mommatown as a programmer on sites like Vincent Martella's, Don Leslie's and IPO Boutique. When I'm not doing that I'm usually writing game mods. <3
