I don't buy that adults are so much more sophisticated, they have emotions too and if someone says their writing sucks they aren't going to like it. Many adults give up writing too and develop the same psychological conditions as teens, they aren't invulnerable. Besides no one is going to throw a tantrum that we didn't include their work on the website, because we aren't going to select mediocre stuff for voting and they will know that no matter what happens none of their work sucks. |

Adults are kids who are better at pretending to be something else. That said, adults have their careers, reputation, etc. to worry about. If an adult were to behave in real life like a lot of kids here act, their careers would be over. The problem with forum-goers is a lack of restraint, not necessarily their age.
A nice thought, but is that how any other competition on SB has worked? Not being selected for voting will be enough to tic some people off. |

Exactly my point... Your main concern is about their psyche and even if they cover it up, they still have the same emotions. So some people make a fuss, I really couldn't care. It happens all the time when we pick moderators, someone always says that they should have got it, it really isn't a big deal. It doesn't have any more of an effect on their psyche than someone negatively criticizing their work that they thought was good. I've seen it happen here many times and while they do get upset and throw a small tantrum, they usually get back on the horse and try to prove them wrong. Lets not get too off-topic though, if you really don't like the competition thing then how do you suggest we put people's work on the website? Don't say use everything, because we don't want to put up some noob that joined yesterday, is 8, and completely sucks at drawing up there. |

You want a friendly forum. The less drama, the more friendliness. Hence, you want to minimize drama. War happens, but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to make peace, yes?
If you must put writing on the site, then ask for submissions. Number the submissions. Then, conduct a simple random sample on the submissions using the calculator command RandInt(1,X,Y), X being the total number of submissions, Y being the number of submissions you'll put on the site. If the result is [1,5, 9], post submissions 1, 5, and 9. If you don't have a calculator that will run an SRS, I could do this for you, or you could use a random digit sheet online. If you must, throw out selections that seem unusually crappy I would do the same with art. Edited by Katsuko, Dec 30 2009, 02:40 PM.

this would work via nomination. we could put up a thread for the different categories (fanfic, fancomic, up and comers, etc.) and have people post of their own accord on what they think would make the cut. once we have a nomination list, everyone gets a chance to vote. winner gets put up on your front page.. repeat this every month or so, depending on how often you want people to get featured. make a backlog to see who got nominated previously. |
