I was thinking that we have contests for comic making and/or just voting and putting the most liked comics, art, etc on the main website. Anyone have any ideas to expand on this idea? |

Well, I have an alternate way of picking rather than a separate contest. When the awards contest start, I'll just add a best fanfic and comic awards. The winners will be placed in the spotlight until the next awards to see if they stay there or if someone else gets the spot. |

I'm not liking that idea too much, I kind of wanted an archive of the best stuff we have to offer for people to view. Obviously there is too much for everything to be on the site, but just some of the best. |

An archive? Like you are constantly putting a big list of stories and comics that will never come down then and such like that. |

If you want that type of archive, I think the easiest way you could do is have a weekly voting on the best fan-created material, or actually designate a group of people to scour the Museum and collectively decide themselves. I wouldn't base the task around contests, mostly because a lot of contests on here are never fully finished in the first place. |

Good to be back
|
Not to mention it could be cool to see past avatar/signature contest winners posted on the website, with a link to the user's profile if desired. But how would this all work, may I ask? Would it be in a hall of fame style section of the website? |

Well, yes, but not putting a ton of content. Just some of the better work and if people want theirs up on the site it would be judged in the next contest.
This contest would not require a prize, the prize in a sense would be having the honors of being put up on the website. So the problem of not being finished is solved because the main reason they never fully finish is no one creates a prize for the winner.
Hall of Fame! Yes, that's what I was thinking. Something similar to that. Edited by Neo Metallix, Dec 30 2009, 11:31 AM.

Prizes haven't been a problem. Just ask me and sMy. Our contests have had to have been cancelled by mere lack of participation. If you want a more reliable method, as I said, having a group of people manually scour for work that's created on one's own time would probably yield more fruitful results over the long term. |

We could do both, have people search for great old comics and have newer ones put in there by contest. I'm sure we can get participation once it's set up and people want to have their work as a part of Sonic Blast. |

What if we have people look for old comics e.t.c. on the site and they will compile the first group of eligible pieces of content, and then we set up a way for the members to vote on their favorites so the top 2-4 get in, and the others that lost will be resubmitted up to 3 times afterward (like a baseball hall of fame vote-in roulette) so all the pieces that really deserve a strong shot get all of their chances given. Once we've exhausted the older content we begin to do a weekly or monthly submission period basis where the same happens, voting wise. It's quick, easy, not as demanding of participants, and really involves the whole site while giving all deserving content a fair shot. |

As usual, the idea of creative competition makes me squeamish. I don't know anything about art, so let me make my argument based on the fan-fic idea. The problem rests on this—the writing here sucks (I'm including my own work here). I'll prove this. Do you want to read any of the fanfics? Do you follow any of our authors, except for your friends and the people who use your characters? Now I'm willing to bet that if you don't want to read any of the SB fanfics, and that if I don't want to read any of the SB fanfics, no one visiting the site is going to want to read them. That isn't bad. It's normal. But as I'll prove in a moment, it does speak against this competition. That isn't SB's fault, of course. Fact is, (with the exception of Tal), we're teenage and college-age writers, and all teenage and college-age writers—even the ones with talent and girlfriends and rich spiritual lives—suck unless the writer happens to be a genius. I don't think anyone on SB is a literary genius. Sorry. Writers here write so that they can suck less, and write something worthwhile in maybe... ten years. Why do teenage writers necessarily suck? See point 1, subpoints a-c here: http://whatever.scalzi.com/2006/04/27/10-things-teenage-writers-should-know-about-writing/ Because of that, competition will be bad for the authors and bad for the site. It will be bad for site for the reasons I've already covered—no one will read the writing, and the writing will add clutter to the page. And why will it be bad for the authors? Because losers will become bitter and discouraged (We're having the drama of the century because of a meaningless RP tournament guys; maturity is not a given at this or any teen-ridden forum), and winners will start to believe that their writing is good... but they'll still suck in reality. All that winning will bring is at best a humble "thank you" borne of a knowledge of one's own suckitude, and at worst hubris and arrogance built on false popularity. Does that mean that writers shouldn't be recognized? Of course not. But they should be recognized and encouraged in a way that doesn't involve all the drama inherent to a subjective competition. For example, I think most SB writers would be much happier just to receive a comment on every piece they post than to win one competition. Edited by Katsuko, Dec 30 2009, 01:08 PM.

Alright then, no competitions. We'll just go around picking out what's already there and vote on it like Bowie said. What do you think of that? And what is so bad about competition anyway? You do know that competition is what got the book Frankenstein written, right? If it wasn't for them competing over who made the scariest story, it would have never existed. I say that's still a competition. Writers who get posted on the site will still develop hubris. Writers who are not selected will still wallow in despair because someone enjoyed their writing less than some other schmuck's.

Read my edit, and they don't need to know it's a competition. For all they know it's just randomly selected. |

Competition between professional adults is not a bad thing. Competition between teenagers whose egos are woven into the false idea that their writing is good is. Why? Because teenagers, and particularly teenagers on the internet, are sore losers. They throw temper tantrums. They say that the competition is bull-crap, run by biased or incompetent judges (which, frankly, is often true. Forum-goers tend to be as bad at fair judgement as writing). They flame. They get banned. And worst of all, they stop writing. Their writing sucked. Their loss proves that. Why continue? Why go on? It's just a bad deal.
Why not randomly select it? Edited by Katsuko, Dec 30 2009, 01:25 PM.
